Amazingly, it's been almost four months since Starfield first landed on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC! Since then, the game has received a bunch of updates, been nominated for various awards, and has received its fair share of criticism as well - although the Pure Xbox community clearly thinks it's a Game of the Year contender!
Considering it's a follow-up to Skyrim, there's been a lot of intrigue around whether Bethesda's new IP will be able to go the distance in terms of keeping players engaged for months, years and maybe decades to come. There's a long way to go until we reach that conclusion, but as 2023 comes to an end, now feels like a good time to check in.
So, we're keen to find out whether you're still enjoying Starfield in December, or whether it failed to hold your attention beyond the first couple of months. Perhaps there's a specific feature (such as mods) that you're waiting for instead?
If you are still playing, how many hours have you put in so far? Are we talking tens or hundreds? Have you dipped into the New Game+ offerings yet? Can you see yourself playing Starfield by the time we get to 2030 and beyond?!
Let us know how you're getting on with Starfield down in the poll and comments section below.

I played and loved it when it first came out but got sidetracked by other releases (especially Alan Wake 2 which I had been dying to play). But I still have it installed and plan on getting back to it soon.
Finished it, NG+ once to get a few extra achievements. ~170 hours or so into it. Only achievement I didn't get was to get to lvl 100. I'll pick it back up when they put out new content for it. Too many other games to play to spend more time in it.
I finished it.
I was looking forward to New Game +, but my save file deleted.
I finished the story with one faction, done a few Ng+ speed runs, done another faction. Spent about 300 hours in the game when it came out.
I do come back to it every few weeks when I'm between games. I fly about, explore some planets discover somethings I missed, work on an outpost and then at some point I find another game to play.
IF Bethesda is serious about continually supporting it outside of DLC I could see it staying as my little "pallet clense" / "game break" between major releases.
I put 202 hours into Starfield. Some of that was my son building outposts in his own save file, but most of it was me loving the single player quests.
I know a lot of folks were disappointed by the game, and I totally get why. But it was exactly what I wanted and expected. GOTY for me, followed closely by Spidey 2.
Still playing going to finish off the Crimson fleet missions then straight into new game plus but my hours on it have gone down lately
@CharlieChooChoo “Blaine is a pain, but we have to take the train.”
I’m in the average group of 60 hours.
In some ways a great game but in others it aged before it’s release, sums it up for me.
I have all the consoles and I picked BG3 to play before it and I’m still playing. I’ll start on Starfield at some point - they keep adding to it!
I'm with 103 hours so far and have no intention to stop yet. Finished the game and I'm doing now all side quests and activities because I want all achievements.
After that I'll start the new game plus.
im close to the 300 hour mark. i would need more story/quest to keep playing. would love dlc or mods to expand the vanguard questline. i don't want any more main story puke though.
Just finished it two weeks ago!
Played about 200 hours I think, unlocked all achievements. Not nearly as good as Skyrim or Fallout 4, but I still loved it.
I never really started
@CharlieChooChoo What really happened to Patricia............
I put in around 35 hours before quitting. I may go back to it at some point, but definitely not anytime soon.
I finally broke the spell it had on me after 3 playthroughs. I have a 4th playthrough going but have scaled way back on playing it to one or two nights per month.
I believe I am around the 250 hour mark. My personal game of the year.
I played for a while but it never gripped me the way Skyrim or Fallout 3 did; I may return to it but, honestly, I’m not in any rush!
Am still cracking on with it in small bursts. Fabulous game. So much to it. I don’t get the hate at all.
I played it for about three hours. I realized that it sucks, so I stopped.
Sorta planning a good long session during the holidays… also backlog and new GamePass games constantly arriving….
One of my favourites, not enjoyed a title as much since Fallout 4. Can’t wait for the rumoured 10 years of support/content.
I have played about 150 hours, I still play, but less, there are many other games. I'm waiting for future updates and expansions to come back strong to it
I’m about 25 hours in. Was in New Atlantis until the ten hour mark and have been exploring the solar system since. I like the game but it feels overwhelming to play, quest log is full and getting bigger. I hope I stick with it.
It seems like a good game but I soon realised that it would need more than the 2 hours a week that I have for gaming.
200 hours in on first playthrough but had to take a break from it.
Partly because it doesn't get much engagement when live steaming on TikTok.
The main reason though is because I was getting a numb to the game and that's when they stop being fun. So I'd rather take break than get burned out.
169 hours. Unlocked all achievements. Havent touched it since. Will pick it up when the DLC drops.
210 hours first playthrough - loved it. Haven't touched any of the faction questlines - looking forward to those on my next characters.
Can't believe it's already been 4 months. I happened to have started it today and actually quite like it.
@CharlieChooChoo I was hoping for a response just like this!
Your username and picture are obviously the best.........
Honestly LOVED it when it came out. Played for 150+ hours...but somewhere along the way I got bored. It honestly feels like something is missing yet i cant put my finger on it. The lore wasnt really delved into much and the Terrormorphs were kind of a let down. I do believe it will be phenomenal eventually after mutch needed quality of life upgrades.
In some ways, Starfield is the epitome of what's wrong with open world games: the focus seemed much more on the game being huge than on it being compelling. It's a fun playthrough but there's too much bloat, and too many things thay don't make sense which breaks immersion for me.
Played about 40 hours and fell off it and can't see myself going back anytime soon. Pretty bland game and the writing is abysmal. People criticise Ubisoft for their open world games but I'm currently playing AC Valhalla and it's miles better than Starfield.
I’m on a break. I put 250 hours in it and decided to focus on my backlog first before returning in the future. Especially my PS Plus games, since I don’t plan on renewing it next July.
But I’ll definitely return in the near future, probably after new content has been released. Although in the current state I also have lots to partake, since I haven’t even started a new game + or build an airship from the ground. I also have some 800 planets to discover, although I could use some more variety in doing so.
All in all the game is just stunning though. I’m so glad I bought a Series X next to my PS5 for Starfield.
I played more than 170 hours. I have moved to other games now like Cyberpunk and Diablo 4.But I think I will return eventually, when new features come up to the game.
Haven't really wanted to get back in at the moment and side-tracked on other things, but I do plan on returning at some point
I've yet to play it. And as it seems with all games by the time i do its actually going to be a lot better product.
I'm about 70 hours in haven't finished the main quest. I play it almost everyday. I do really like the game but in some ways it's not the 9+ out of 10 game I wanted it to be. For me I'd give it an 8/10 . I think the combat is awkward and that's the part I wish was better.
I put in 250+ hours somehow, finished all the quests and tried NG+. I'm definitely done with it for now but will likely come back for DLC.
I have about 120 hours into it and loving every fantastic second. The level of pure unadulterated exploration is well beyond any other game (on console anyway) to date. Barely even scratched the surface of the main story. Since I finally got Hogwarts Legacy in a recent sale, it has drawn me away quite brilliantly, but with a game like Starfield, the sheer scope of it alone is enough to draw anybody that loves free-form run amok exploring every nook and cranny of the whole bloody universe for crying out loud back into it time and time again, nothing does it better.
No I haven't played and I don't plan to and I won't be the only one. I'm waiting for the day when Microsoft starts localizing games into more languages and not just the basic 8 🙋♂️
Everyone is pretending it’s good, but playing it less than any other Bethesda Game Studios game.
Beat it in about 25 hours or so and haven't touched it since.
I stopped playing in light of the news that there will be major updates in the next year.
Fell off 2 hours in. Maybe it will be like fallout 4 where i fell off and went back 2 years later to get all trophies but the settlement bug one. Atleast i got with bing points
70hours on first run.
No desire to go back, haven’t felt like I’ve ‘missed’ playing it or wanted to jump back in. But it doesn’t help that Bethesda haven’t really touched it since release.
I will most likely get the dlc once Mods reach console version and give it another go.
I put about 2-3 hours in on my first sitting and never went back to it. My wife played for around 20 hours altogether and was like "I'm done".
I don't think it's a bad game. It's just not great and I had no desire whatsoever to play any more of it.
I played for like an hour on GP the day it came out, but it didn’t hook me. Perhaps it was the cloud streaming that took me out of it, but I only had an Xbox One at the time. I have since got a Series X, and ironically enough, I started again this morning. Definitely see myself getting hooked.
it’s been four months already ?!?!
According to my year in review, I put 35 hours into it. I really wanted to like it, one of the reasons I bought an ASUS ROG Ally was to play this and Forza 8 at work. But I ended up dropping both games very quickly. Only managed 15 hours in Forza. Really gutted as these were two of my most anticipated games of 2023.
I did my time with it. About 40hrs. Like most games, I don't see a need to go back.
I am approaching 100 hours on it - I have taken my time and gone into the game sometimes with a weeks break. I have been playing plenty of other great games in the meantime too.
@SlySnake0407 I took me a while to get into it. It starts off very slow to be fair.
I like it but there's so many games this year I set it aside for a while but I will get back to it soon. Had it come out last year i would have put a lot more time in it so far
@Divide_and_Wander yeah playing most game through the cloud sucks. Game streaming just isn't there yet. Some slower paced games are okay streaming like turn based stuff or things that don't depend on quick responses. There's just too much input lag and the visual fidelity isn't as good..streaming shooters just isn't fun
Nah I even uninstalled it after rolling the credits, the game is fine, the ending/NG+ concept is really cool but the gameplay loop is just boring to me.
I didnt start.....im willing to once they add véhicules and maps and im also waiting for mods to conquer
I dont overcharge my games with mids but i love to play with balanced mods on (skins balanced weapons and useful HUDs....)
So i will wait next year maybe i still got lot of games to play and very tiny time
I put 120 hours in, but it felt like I was playing it simply because Id put so much time in. It was not fun any longer and the stories were not interesting enough to keep me going.
Once I decided to stop I uninstalled it and would never go back. Its a seriously flawed design imo.
I am happy that some others enjoy it more than me, but I suspect the numbers playing it next year will be much lower than those still playing skyrim...
I´ve finished it and my playtime was at around 60 hours, it started great but it felt mediocre in the end and even if the concept of new game + is really cool I dont see myself playing it again as I dont see them fix all the things that bugged me. Far from Bethesdas best game imo.
I haven't played it
I did a full playthrough until credits but have not played since. Tbf that is how I played Skyrim too. I will come back for dlc, though.
200 hours, maxed all powers, all achievements, not touched it since. Will definitely return for DLC and mods but it doesn't have the same Roleplaying vibe as Skyrim. I don't feel the need to start a new character.
About 140 hours in and just gone to NG+ and have that awful feeling of wasting 140 hours of my life. Think I'm done with it now. Ending was, although probably quite clever - just not what I wanted it to be. Felt pretty flat by the end.
I have about 223 hours in, 100% of the achievements unlocked, and still play here and there. I'm waiting on the expansion to really go back to playing it at this point, there are so many other games in my backlog I need to catch up on.
Yes, it was a slow start but it's really sunk it's teeth into me recently. I'm basically ignoring the story quests and getting into weapon mods/crafting - it's quite impressive, almost a game within a game.
I've not really played any Bethesda game previously so I'm almost in disbelief how a game this good exists and is panned by critics. It does so much so well.
@ValkyriaProfile next on the list!
Who cares? Big hype in release time, not that good in reality
I've played it for about 90 hours but not touched it for the last couple of months, I'll probably jump back on for the expansion and any additions it gets
300 plus lol... Try 800 plus and counting to even come close to the amount of time I have on just one character in Starfield. I'm disabled because of health issues caused by an accident that keeps me from working so that's how I have 35 days played in the game.
I tried it due to all the hype but couldn't get into it. Found it bit dull and long winded, but people still love it; that's fine just does not hold my attention like other games
@Duck_Farmer Hey there friend
I echo the exact same sentiment as you for two reasons:
Maybe I was just craving an open world action rpg or something.
But then I got Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty Edition and after the abysmal launch(wich I played a bit on PC) I can safely say it is an amzing open world shooter rpg, that in my opinion, does what Starfield does not.
For everyone who played, finished and love Starfield, more power to you.
It is always great to find a game that we can put hours on end and all of them are exciting. It´s what we want the most.
And as of now, those games for me are Cyberpunk 2077 and AC Valhalla on my Series X, Zelda TOTK on my Switch and Spiderman 2 on my PS5.
What a great year for gaming this was.
Cheers and happy gaming
only got it in blackfriday sale so i'm still playing it and my save counter has just passed 3 days.
i'm approaching the point when i will be thinking about diving into the final mission soon.
Never been one to play a game anything like Starfield, nor really a Bethesda fan in general. But I dove into Starfield eager to see the planets. At some point in my first ng+, New Atlantis sort of crumbled as major textures no longer loaded in. I thought it was funny, turns out it was part of a known game-breaking bug. I ignored it and kept going hoping the big patch would fix it. But my main mission had already stopped progressing, and it was no longer giving me temples to find. So 534 hours into Starfield and I finally gave up hope because I'm unwilling to start over on a game shipped to us as broken as this. Really disappointed, but can't deny I got my money's worth out of it.
Waiting for 60FPS patch on Series X. I just can’t do 30FPS anymore. I love Zelda games but I couldn’t finish BOTW and didn’t even buy TOTK as great as both games are. On large TV, 30FPS is borderline unplayable for me.
I’m just waiting on DLC. On my 6th NG+ and need some variety since i try to do all the factions each time.
Some great games you're playing there @RaZieLDaNtE. In addition to AC Valhalla on PS5, I'm playing Divinity: Original Sin on Xbox and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 on Switch and don't regret dropping Starfield for any of them. IMO, they're all vastly superior RPGs.
I found the Starfield universe and NPC's story arcs pretty bland and their ability to read the room during combat comical. I'd literally be in a firefight to the death with terrormorphs and my companion would come up to me and want to have some deep and meaningful conversation about some unresolved psychological issues from their childhood. Absolutely no comparison to the fantastically realised story arc of an NPC like Ivarr from AC Valhalla.
Having said that, people are putting hundreds of hours into this game so there's obviously depth there, but it's just not for me. May come back to it at some point in the future when Bethesda have had a chance to develop it further.
@awp69
This. I think it's a great game. It came out amidst so many other great games. Personally my attention has been almost completely on Lies of P.
Riding on the Skyrim phenomenon, I get the sense Starfield will be there waiting for me when I'm done getting annihilated by the monsters of Krat.
Yes, not as much as when it first came out but I'm still going through the main story. I got sidetracked by other games but definitely going to start playing this more again soon. It's my favorite Xbox console exclusive of the year.
@PracticeDummyGaming Lies of P was fantastic. I could feel it from the demo. When it hit Game Pass, I started it up immediately. It was easier to take stabs at progress at Lies than Starfield. Lies draws you in with atmosphere and the desire to beat the bosses. I wanted to "get it out of the way" before focusing on Starfield.
Lies really gave me that old spark I rarely feel anymore.
I played hard at launch but the NG+ kind of sucked the life out of it. I completely did a first playthrough as in finished the story and most of not all side content. I see the logic because of Skyrim and how many new games had been made in that game. It just didn't flow well in Starfield when they release new content and open up mods and make Outposts bigger and badder I'll for sure be back. All the hate in it is ridiculous and boils down to exclusivity which is sad. It wouldn't have gotten 98% of the critique if it was on PlayStation. I already have to deal with BG3 winning GOAT for the same exact reason.
