Earlier this week, we celebrated ten years since the Xbox One's launch back on November 22nd, 2013, and therefore we thought we'd use our weekly "Pick One" feature to focus on the launch lineup that shipped alongside that console.
Looking back, there were some genuinely great games you could purchase on day one, including Dead Rising 3, Ryse: Son of Rome, Forza Motorsport 5, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Battlefield 4 and so much more.
In fact, a few of these are still being enjoyed by a decent number of players to this day across Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, with exceptions being the likes of Zumba Fitness: World Party and the old sports titles. Still, for a console that suffered so heavily at launch, the Xbox One didn't do badly in the games department in 2013!
We're going to throw the entire list of Xbox One launch titles in our "Pick One" poll below, so you can give your verdict on your favourite of the bunch. If you want to shout out any others, feel free to do so in the comments section!

I remember battlefield 4 being the game I brought home with it after waiting in line for the midnight console release.
But I ended up liking black flag the most out of all of the ones listed. After that probably dead rising 3, battlefield, and ryse.
I voted for Black Flag, but that’s not winning a prize with its competition. Wasn’t MCC a launch release? I remember MCC was my only Xbox One game for a looooong time. Back in 2014, I wouldn’t have considered MCC an option for “best launch title” because it was a compilation of old games, but honestly it probably deserves the honor. Weird to think that Rare Replay was my second Xbox One game, considering I got the console at launch… and used it to play mostly Xbox 360 games.
Honestly though, the Xbox launch catalog was sort of weak. 2014 in general was a weak year for gaming (and 2015 wasn’t much better). Shovel Knight was my GotY and I think that was the only game I considered even 9/10 tier that year (if you don’t count PT, which I didn’t then, as I thought it was just a mind-blowing demo then… but a better pick for GotY 2014 now). When I think back on all of the years I’ve been gaming, either 2012 or 2014 is perhaps the weakest year in gaming history (in my opinion). Going back that far, it makes you realize how spoiled we are now with our release schedules.
Sunset Overdrive
@somnambulance MCC launched in 2014, a year after the XBOX One launched (at least here in the States). It was bundled with a lot of systems though so it kind of seems like it was a launch title if you didn’t get one during the first 6 months or so.
For me it was Forza MotorSport 5. That said, I didn’t get my XBOX One until around September 2014. I think Assassins Creed IV I enjoyed a bit more but I played that on my Wii U a couple months after release, so I didn’t have an XBOX yet.
Picked Black Flag but Ryse was a very underrated game and would be my second choice.
I bought a PS4 back then, but I liked the look of Ryse so much. I would sometimes go to the store to buy video games and saw Ryse and wished I had bought an Xbox. Never played it though.
@Altaria_97 Whoa, really? I got the Xbone at launch. I know I couldn’t use mine for a little while originally because I didn’t have an internet connection at the time to set it up, but was it really a paperweight for me for a WHOLE YEAR before I used it? That seems crazy, but totally true. For a while in the Xbox One’s lifespan, I was pretty angsty about it being the first console I ever had that needed internet to set it up. Jeez, I misread 2013 as 2014. Back in 2013, I was definitely playing Bioshock Infinite, GTA5, and my eighth playthrough of Skyrim on my 360 over any (at the time) next gen titles. Man, the launch of Xbone was such a weird time period in gaming for me. It’s sort of funny, I felt like I went into a sort of gaming coma from 2012-2015 and didn’t wake up til Ori and the Blind Forest came out.
Forza Motorsport 5, easily. It's the entire reason I got an Xbox One. In a generation where it took Sony forever to release a GT game, literally the entire generation, it was amazing to get a steady supply of Forza games, which were all great games.
For me, it was a close call between Ryse and Black Flag. I went with the latter because, well, sea shanties 🤷
Ryse and Dead Rising 3. I actually really liked the launch lineup. Black Flag in 3rd.
Ryse up! Loved 🥰 the vote for Angry Birds Star Wars though … flung a lot of birds in my day…
I didn't originally play it on Xbox (Don Mattrick made sure I would not touch anything Xbox for years), but from that list, AC4 wins among the rest, IMO.
Objectively, Ryse and Dead Rising 3 were some very appealing exclusives that I never played due to my dislike of Xbox's direction at the time. Killer instinct would had interested me if it had not been released as a F2P game. That did not help their image in my eyes, at that time.
The launch lineup was very strong unlike PS4, but it was bigger, 100 more expensive
(500 vs. 400) and the marketing was confusing at best, so I bought a PS4 first. I voted for Killer Instinct because it was a highly anticipated sequel. Ryse was easily the console game with best graphics at that time.
More exclusives on launch than X has now lol. I kid...or do I...........?
I went Ryse son of rome just pipped black flag.
Can’t believe went round a relatives tonight and they had an xbox360 with Kinect in there back room.
I just had to touch it and say hello.
Didnt buy the VCR at release because I would never have a camera like kinect in my home, but having played many of those games later, I'll take Panzer Dragoon spiritual successor Crimson Dragon. It's Microsoft published, why is it still not on game pass?
That's actually a really strong line up.
Ryse, for sure. That game still looks amazing by today's standards. I also liked the linear story and the combat. Still have hope we'll get Ryse 2 someday...
Dead Rising 3 was the sole reason I ended up getting an Xbone later down the line (and before I had a gaming PC). Despite its MANY flaws (though not as many as DR4), there's still fun to be had, and the boss music still slaps.
Ryse and that wasn't exactly great but it's an easy pick due to that list being mostly abysmal and filled with 360 re-releases.
I went with Ryse, although Dead Rising 3 a close second. As others have said, the One may have been pretty disastrous at launch but definitely had better launch games than the series X…
That’s a pretty strong looking launch to me. Plenty to choose from and not too many I would say are bad games.
Ryse was great and got my vote but there were so many good launch games dead rising is always a buzz and black flag was the last assassin's Creed game that imo was actually good ryse should of got a sequel beautiful looking game
Skylanders Swap Force for the win!
Dead Rising 3.
DR3 because I played Black Flag on PC and skipped Ryse until a couple years ago.
I love Black Flag, but it was a PS3/360 port, and as such it's disqualified in my eyes.
It's going to be a toss up for me. I love Ryse: Son of Rome, but I also love Powerstar Golf and wish it was a continuing franchise because it was a ton of fun.
Bonus: Anyone with a Steam Deck, Ryse Son of Rome looks and plays great on it, and you can get it cheap fairly often. I think I bought it for $5 last year when I bought my Steam Deck and it's just as fun as I remembered.
While it wasn't a launch title, my favorite Xbox One game is Sunset Overdrive. I feel it's often overlooked and should be played more.
I'm still hoping Sony ports it to the PS5 so more people can play it and experience it. Plus it could increase the chances of getting a sequel, unless insomniac gets stuck only making superhero games, which would suck.
Hmmm none of them
@Broosh I still need to play Dead Rising 3
Zoo Tycoon was Kinect/dumbed down so sadly no.
Forza Motorsport 5 is 'passable' I hated it on launch. But it's my vote as it's the 'safest I can make of any I've played'. Not into NFS of that style only the circuit racers not the open world ones, give me menus any day. Dead Rising is probably fine but even then if they don't have the gimmick of the first game seems besides story or atmosphere not worth it but I don't know. I picked up ZombiU because of the Gamepad, not into zombies at all. I don't care for horror really at all unless there is something about it.
I have come around to it over the years but even then it's just ok, not FM6 thankfully. But it's tied with FM7 as a fine game just not the better racing game played better older games with far better ideas, physics I don't dislike but tolerate, content handling is so boring. Championships/varied event types is fine, why is it car classes, it's so dumbed down. Give me more flexible event types/restrictions I can replay it hundreds of times with strategy to keep in mind not 100s of times with different car classes of openness that's boring.
Battlefield 4 is ok, I have it on PS4 and it's a fine game, I need to try it again. Not got into it as much as older BF titles. Ghosts on PS4 as well. May try them again to see what they did with those COD titles but not going out of my way to really care.
Assassin's Creed existed then..... Sure I know people bought it and care a lot for that era of them, I don't care personally,.
Ryse Son of Rome is 'ok' didn't hold my attention. It's the God of War 2018, cinematic and boring me to death with it's gameplay and whatever moments.
Ryse Son of Rome made it clear Hellblade and God of War took inspiration from it, which it in turn maybe did or didn't from Last of Us as well/Uncharted even though Uncharted is less awkward to play then Last of Us, God of War 2018, Order 1886 (second time and after finished it goes on the shelf no more cinematic games I can't stand them) which I'm replaying and eh it's awkward, who wants strafe 'all the time' and awkward no crouch for firefights in some situations, situational sprint too like seriously, it's a mess for control/movement but has it's moments in it's world at least.
Many of the others aren't of interest to me whether Killer Instinct, Dead Rising, NFS, and more that are big games/physical. Thought Kinect Rivals was launch, makes sense later I guess. Fine to own it, tried it once for testing.... I don't have much Kinect use with my Xbox One VCR I use the Xbox One X for everything Blu-Ray/DVD/CD testing, BC and games/music apps that's about it.
Barely ever heard of Fighter Within that was the Kinect game by Ubisoft that flopped right? Yep the Kinect based fighting game, cool idea, rough execution, only heard of it once before like a few weeks/month ago.
Lococycle never heard of, first time hearing about it, but sounds cool, ah Twisted Pixel, digital release likely that's why never heard of it. For a motorcycle game by them bet it was cool.
Crimson Dragon never heard of either, first time hearing about it, but sounds and looks cool, never knew they hard rail shooters/Panzer Dragoon style on Xbox One, must have been digital only as well?
Ryse: Son of Rome is still a fantastic game. Very underrated and excellent graphics.
As a racing fan I enjoyed forza 5. It wasn’t forza 4, but I had a good time.
Ryse: Son of Rome - Still awesome looking game. And of coz the Missing one from Insomniac games.: Sunset overdrive!!!! (not in the list)
Dead Rising 3 was fantastic! Though I had a soft spot for Battlefield.
None. I waited a year before getting an Xbox One.
Ryse, but wow I'd forgotten how bad that line up was.
