It's time for another round of Pick One! This week, following the reveal of Silent Hill 2's remake as a timed PlayStation exclusive (boo!), we thought we'd take a look back at the history of the Silent Hill series on Xbox specifically.
It's definitely not been plain sailing for Silent Hill on Xbox, with the platform having missed out on a bunch of titles over the years. This should have been largely remedied with the arrival of Silent Hill: HD Collection back in 2012 (which is backwards compatible on modern consoles), but the collection ultimately suffered from a mixed reception.

With gruesome sights around every corner and his sanity being tested, he must find his way out of this nightmare. Enter The Room, a thrilling story in the most terrifying game series of all time.
Silent Hill: Homecoming (2008)
In Silent Hill Homecoming, Alex Shepherd has returned to his hometown of Shepherd's Glen to investigate the sudden disappearance of his brother. From Shepherd's Glen to the foggy streets of Silent Hill, Alex will face the darkest of horrors while struggling with his own grip on reality.

I liked Shattered Memories, a reimagining of the first game. I still have to play the others.
Silent Hill is one of my favorite franchises. My personal favorite is Silent Hill 2. It was the first time I ever felt like a game was truly creepy. It made you feel alone and haunted. The game taps into your mind with its psychological horror and didn’t rely on jump scares.
The start of the story was simple with James receiving a letter from his wife Mary to meet in their “special place” in Silent Hill. Only Mary had been dead for three years… it wasn’t over the top. It wasn’t complicated, but it pulled me in as I wanted to know more. From there the story progressed and the terror began.
I’ve played the other games in the series and they ranged from good to terrible, but Silent Hill 2 is my favorite. A highlight in the series and in horror games in general.
The room will be one of my favourties, that first person view in the room really added something. Not the best game, but I'll always remember the experience
Silent Hill 2, obvs.
Although the original PS1 game is, far and away, my favorite. Such a raw and scary game. Utterly without peer that gen in that regard.
@Dr_Luigi The original trilogy is up there with some of the greatest games ever made, but the franchise has been abused and/or neglected ever since. We'll see how these new games fare, although I'm not confident about Bloober Team's ability to do justice to the second game.
@Ralizah I’m on the fence with Bloober Team as well, but I have hope. They are a young team and seem to get games out in a reasonable amount of time. They do a great job with atmosphere which is definitely one of Silent Hill’s strong points. Where Bloober Team lacks is with story, character building, and combat, but Silent Hill wasn’t known for great combat either. The story and characters are already done for them. The Silent Hill 2 remake is being watched over by Konami along with some key members who worked on the original. They might surprise us and create something special.
I voted for Silent Hill 2 despite the first game being my favourite
It's a crappy move from Sony, unsurprisingly, to make a big title such as Silent Hill 2 exclusive.
However, Xbox is the only current gen console where I can play SH Origins, SH1, SH2 HD, SH3 HD, SH4 and SH Homecoming. It's a shame Downpour isn't on the store, but Xbox is practically the home of Silent Hill by now.
(Obviously Origins, 1 and 4 are playable through emulation, but it still counts!)
Silent Hill 2 is obviously the best one. The first three games are really solid, but unfortunately the series sort of slipped for a while.
Of course, if PT counts as a Silent Hill game, it puts even Silent Hill 2 in the dust, in my opinion.
Silent Hill Homecoming for me although I really like Shattered Memories on Wii too
Would love to play any of these but there aren't digital versions.
1 and 2 are enduring classics, fresh and original when released. All of the other games have been a retread of the first two’s iconography atmosphere and stories. Voting 2.
Errrrrr what am I missing? Where is Silent Hill? The original is the best. Best story, setting, and especially the soundtrack and music within. No idea why they're not starting the remakes from the beginning. It's heresy!
I'm not a fan of the Silent Hill games, but The Room will always have an impact on me. The whole idea of being in a room, it was so claustrophobic and eerie, and one of my favourite gaming concepts, especially for horror games.
@DaverDaver @Utena-mobile I haven't played the original but I also think that they should have started with the first game. I played Shattered Memories on Wii, is it a faithful reimagining of the first one? Would a remaster of Shattered Memories be good as the first choice?
I almost played 2 and 3 on Xbox but they say that the HD collection ruined the games somehow.
Koei Tecmo started the remasters/remakes with the last entry of Project Zero/Fatal Frame and now they're going backwards and I'm sure they did it because Maiden of Black Water is the easiest to remaster.
@Utena-mobile Thanks, I feel like playing all the games (including 1) sooner or later.
EDIT: Regarding the dynamic gameplay, Shattered Memories defined me very well at the end of the game, which was startling but also restorative.
@Utena-mobile Yes, I'm going to wait to see what we get on Xbox, even if it takes a while.
The seven sentences about me/about the way I was living were right! I wrote them down.
Voted for Homecoming bc it’s the only one I own. Really need to play through it
@Utena-mobile I too have such a fond spot for the first four games. I went into these games not knowing anything about them and walked away absolutely loving them. I just remember being amazed something so terrifying was able to pull me in and I wanted to know more. Then when I found out there were multiple endings I had to go back and replay them. These are absolutely some of the best horror games of all time.
I also agree about the ones developed by western developers. They tried, and I give them credit for that. I just think it’s harder to nail for them as Japanese horror has been more psychological and western horror has been more boo. Out of the new games announced, do you have a particular one you’re looking forward to the most?
@Banjo- I think they skipped the original Silent Hill because they might be looking at Shattered Memories as the remake? Similar to how Capcom remade RE1 years ago, and then in recent years started with RE2. Just a guess of course. I do hope Bloober Team gets SH2 right and Konami asks them to remake 1.
@Utena-mobile Thank you, I came up with that name years ago for Xbox Live. I was terrible at picking names. So I decided to take my three favorite games and combined them together. Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Fatal Frame. Turns out I wasn’t so bad at picking names after all lol.
I am pretty much excited for everything. I feel like as Silent Hill fans, we have been deprived and starving for anything new. Then all of a sudden it was like Christmas morning, I felt like a kid again. With the Silent Hill 2 remake, I think we know more of what to expect. We’ve played the original, and they showed off more of that than any of the other games.
Townfall I’m curious about. They really didn’t tell us much and people have been trying to see if there’s a message they can “decipher” out of the radio. Maybe this is the one with short stories that was rumored for a couple months now?
Silent Hill F to be set in Japan. I’m hopeful this can sit on the shelf next to the first four games and feel like it belongs. I’m wondering if “F” stands for five? Is this going to be like a Silent Hill 5 for us? I’m just excited, and I want more. I’m also hoping that these are not all time exclusive for PlayStation 5 as I want to play them when they first come out. I’ve waited long enough. I don’t want to wait any longer.
I did not know that’s how J.J. Abrams writes. That’s one I’m not as excited for but I want to know more. The Return to Silent Hill movie based off 2 has me curious as I loved the game, and I’m wondering how well they can retell that story. Are they going to have the hurt and tormented side characters the game had? Are they going to twist the story around a bit like they did with the first movie? Will they chose one of the games endings or come up with a new ending? I’m just want to know more on everything shown at the event. If I had to pick one I’m most excited about… I’m going to say Silent Hill F. I’m not sure why but I think it has huge potential, but I’m sure my excitement will change a few different times as more information comes out these projects.
@EvilSilentFrame That was my idea but because I have only played Shattered Memories, I didn't know how different 1 and Shattered Memories are, until Utena-mobile answered. However, the most modern console with Shattered Memories is Wii. The perfect scenario would be a remake of 1 + Shattered Memories. Imagine that, Shattered Memories being an additional story mode in the menu.
@Banjo- A remake of 1 and Shattered Memories would be awesome. Players can experience both versions of the stories. I always was hoping Capcom would throw in their RE originals as an option along with their remakes. Players can compare and see what’s changed and what was faithful to the original. Plus sometimes I want to go back and play the older ones and having it available on modern consoles would be nice.
No SH games on Xbox but I would love to replay 2 (PS2) (awesome OST imo). I don't mind replaying 20 year old games (RE4 remake is another one)
