It's time for another round of Pick One! This weekend, to celebrate the addition of Mass Effect Legendary Edition on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (via EA Play), we thought we'd take a closer look at its three classic games.
We actually did a similar poll to this back in November 2020, with Mass Effect 2 coming out on top with 67% of the vote, but now that the Legendary Edition has been released and the first game in particular has received some notable improvements, we're interested to know whether your opinion has changed over the past year-or-so.
So, which is your favourite? Remember, you can only pick one!
Let's take a look at what we're working with:
Mass Effect (2007)
You are Commander Shepard of the SS Normandy, an elite agent in humanity’s Systems Alliance Military. Explore the galaxy with your hand picked squad of combat, tech and biotic specialists as you race against time to stop a madman bent on galactic destruction.
Mass Effect 2 (2010)
Across the galaxy, entire human colonies are vanishing. As Commander Shepard, you will recruit anelite team of the galaxy’s most dangerous and skilled experts, and lead them on an assault into themost dangerous area of the galaxy - from which you might not return.
Mass Effect 3 (2012)
Earth is burning. The Reapers have taken over and other civilizations are falling like dominoes. Lead the final fight to save humanity and take back Earth from these terrifying machines, Commander Shepard.
Let us know which of these Mass Effect trilogy games is your favourite below.

Suicide mission plus the shepherd/Cerberus dynamic makes mass effect 2 my favourite. But all 3 of them are classics, even 3 despite some of its decisions
Mass effect 1 great world building and story
Mass effect 2 not actually much story
Mass effect 3 great apart from the ending
Always the first for me. Incredible game and a great antagonist.
That is without playing the Legendary Edition.
First one. Because it was actually a RPG unlike the shooter with RPG elements the sequels were.
2 is objectively the better game and the obvious option but I voted for 1. There’s just something about it, maybe it was because it was the first time we got introduced to this universe and characters but I really dug the world building, lore and heavier RPG elements. Plus I’m one of three that loves the Mako
Will be interesting to see if that still holds up after the remaster. God knows when I’ll find 100+ hours for that though 😂
I voted the first as my favorite, but I feel that would change depending on my mood.
But I just love the atmosphere and wonder of the first, the choices and openness of the second, and the action and emotions of the third.
Mass Effect 3 is easily the best one of the three. Mass Effect 2 just doesn't offer anything in terms of story, you're just doing loyalty missions in order to recruit people for the suicide mission. While ME3 on the other hand actually has epic story missions where you do stuff that has been hyped up throughout the entire series. Not to mention the excellent Citadel DLC, which is the best DLC in the series.
It's too bad that Andromeda isn't included in the poll because I've been playing it for 10+ hours this past week and it's such a good game. If I would rank it now, I would definitely put it as the second best ME game after ME3.
For me it's the first. I thought it had the best storytelling and while the gameplay was the roughest, I liked certain elements of it the most, particularly weapon upgrading.
Mass Effect 2.
For me it’s the first game, the epic fight at the end where you could decide to save the … or let them die, it still has so much emotion
I voted for one, it might have some of the best dialogue in any game and that final citadel mission is chef kiss perfect.
Mass Effect 2. Not only my favorite Mass Effect but one of my all time favorite games.
How about an option. I haven’t played any
The entire trilogy is outstanding. Still to this day the most ambitious trilogy of games I've ever seen but if I had to pick there's only one option, ME2 is still the best although 3 is damn close like just a hair behind it. ME1 is my least favorite but even still it's a fantastic game as well with the best villain of the trilogy.
The first for me.
It's not even close 😊
I love the first one and have played it countless times. For all the primitive, badly-dated parts of its gameplay, the story was compelling and engaging throughout.
ME2 I enjoyed a lot, but not as much as the consensus. The individual loyalty missions were great for adding depth and I loved my plays of it, but wasn’t as compelled to replay this one (still have done it four times though!).
ME3 to me was the best game of a fantastic bunch. The combat just felt so slick and the way that it was changed up to make the game more fast-paced was a welcome change. Hiding behind cover on Insanity runs was just not possible, and it made for a real adrenaline rush (people say Andromeda improved this feel but I disagree and hold ME3 as the best for combat). The ending (post patches) I actually enjoyed and felt torn down routes to take during it - and throughout the series.
It’s a phenomenal trilogy and I envy those who are about to experience it for the first time.
Is it just me or if in the ME2 suicide mission you do all the side missions (which isn't asking a lot), then your team is never in any danger the entire time? Haven't played it since 2010, but that was my lasting impression.
@stinkyx
If you choose unwisely for the different special roles in the mission I think you could still lose people. I could be wrong though.
I thought two was just all narrow corridors with limited ammo. I just did not like it.
for me the order goes
ME1, ME3, ME2................................................................Andromeda
@stinkyx
No you can still lose people if you choose wrong specialists for their roles.
Number 1 for me. I'll be honest and say I gave up on number 2 as it just wasn't the same game for me. I loved the RPG elements of one, and exploration on the Mako was a big thing for me.
I loved exploring all the planets on the Mako and felt like a true Astronaut!
I love the first one as it has the best story and characters and I actually like its RPG mechanics (by mid game my sniper rifle was a beast). Now i will be controversial as my second favorite is Andromeda
I love these games replaying the remasters was a pleasurable joy.
@Balta666 Glad to see another person who liked Andromeda. I'm 15 hours into the game right now and I'm absolutely loving it. The gameplay is the best the series has seen so far. Combat is much more fun and exhilarating compared to the previous titles which were cover-based shooters. Being able to jump and dash makes firefights more fun, and then you have the ability to hotkey three powers, which makes the gameplay much more interesting. I'm focusing on biotics powers right now and it's so satisfying being able to combine attacks and create combo detonators.
Then you have the open worlds and they're great to explore, especially with the improved 'Mako' vehicle. There's so much stuff to do and it's all interesting and fun. This game is just great and so underrated if you ask me.
@LtSarge absolutely, I also played the game last year so after the launch problems were ironed out. The main story and overall narrative are quite good and all the things you mentioned make it the best one in the series in terms of gameplay. Obviously it does not have shepard, that it was a fantastic protagonist but it is overall an excellent game today
The music in the first game is superb. It really set the mood of the game perfectly.
I think the second game was the best, the combat was so much tighter than the first, the introductions to the characters were superb ( compare meeting Garrus in ME1 to ME2, the second games introduction was so much better) .
ME1 is my second favourite, and ME3 is my third favourite. I didn't mind the extended ending in the third game, but my goodness, THAT journal system was SOOOO bad.
I'm shocked at how many people chose ME1. I thought I was the only one who considers it untouchable. The world-building, characters, soundtrack, lore, exploring planets in the Mako, disliking and then falling in love with Ashley... Oops, got carried away there 😅 It's my favourite game ever. I sometimes boot it up just to loiter around the Citadel for no reason.
A version of ME2 with the updated combat of ME3 would make it an 11/10
Andromeda... fight me. It had a good story that wasn't 'fate of the entire galaxy in the hands of one person' and did a good job establishing political issues while having interesting dungeon designs.
I can't answer at the moment as I never got to play the 1st one so will get back to you all as soon as I play through them.
ME1 is definitely my favorite by far. ME2 is my least favorite. I can't tell you how many times I fell asleep while scanning planets. I also didn't like how they broke up the missions. It felt more like a third person shooter than an RPG.
