It's time for another round of Pick One! This week, to celebrate the upcoming release of Sonic Frontiers on November 8th, we thought we'd take a look back at the history of Sonic games on Xbox, and specifically the 3D titles.
We ran a similar poll on Pure Xbox last year where we included the 2D games as well, and Sonic Mania comfortably won the vote - although the 3D Xbox 360 title Sonic Generations actually finished in second place!
We've decided to leave off the spin-offs in this poll, so you won't find any of the racing games or Sonic The Fighters, for example. Instead, we're focusing purely on the core Sonic the Hedgehog platforming games.
So, let's give it a try - which is your favourite 3D Sonic game? Remember, you can only pick one!
Let's take a look at some of the highlights of what we're working with:
Sonic Adventure
An ancient evil lurking within the Master Emerald has been unleashed from its slumber by the devious Dr. Eggman and is on the verge of becoming the ultimate monster using the 7 Chaos Emeralds. Only Sonic and his friends are heroic enough to put a stop to Dr. Eggman and his evil minions.
Sonic Adventure 2
In the fight between heroes and villains, will you choose to save the world or conquer it?The hunt for the Chaos Emeralds is on and battle lines have been drawn between Hero and Dark.
Sonic Heroes
Sonic Heroes challenges gamers to control three characters simultaneously; each offering the unique individual ability of speed, power, or flight. Multiple teams follow their own unique story paths across 14 massive stages.
Sonic Unleashed
Having been broken apart by the evil Dr Eggman, it’s down to Sonic to put the pieces of the world back together again by retrieving the power of the chaos emeralds. In doing so, Sonic will find himself in a race against time and faced with an unusual situation that will challenge him in ways never before seen.
Sonic Colors
Join Sonic in the high-speed adventure of a lifetime! The evil Dr. Eggman has built a gigantic interstellar amusement park bursting with incredible rides and colourful attractions – but he’s powering it with a captured alien race called “Wisps.”
Sonic Generations
Sonic’s universe is thrown into chaos when a mysterious new power comes into force, creating ‘time holes’ which take Sonic and his friends back in time. Whilst there, Sonic runs into some very familiar characters from his past including a younger version of himself!
Sonic Forces
Join Sonic as he tries to take back the world in SONIC FORCES, the newest game from the team that brought you Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations. The evil Dr. Eggman has conquered much of the world with help from a powerful and mysterious new villain named Infinite.
Which is your favourite 3D Sonic game (that's not a racer)? Tell us in the poll and comments below!

Adventure 2 was my favourite because it introduced shadow
1. Adventure 2
2. Generations
3. Unleashed
4. Adventure
5. Heroes
6. Colors
7. Lost World
Didn't play the rest
Tie between Colors and Generations, for me.
Unleashed for sure.
I didn’t realize there were that many 3D Sonic games. I haven’t played a lot of them, but I do remember getting a Dreamcast and being blown away by Sonic Adventure. It might not seem like a big deal now but at the time, it was so different from all other sonic games and to see the graphics from the PS, Saturn, and N64 to this… I was all into Sonic Adventure.
None of them? I'm love me some Sonic but none of the 3D games have been up to much. If I had to pick it would be Generations.
The first Sonic Adventure because it had more variety than the others like it's the only one with a fishing story mode.
Adventure 1 and 2 are the best ones. I yearn for that type of gameplay to be revisited someday.
I've been playing through every Sonic game leading up to Frontiers because I wanted to answer this question! I grew up with a Genesis and Sonic 2 being my first console game and have played every Sonic game since with the exception of Lost World and Colors. Going into things, I though Adventure 1 was my favorite, but after playing through everything, that game holds up very poorly, even compared to Adventure 2. It's really janky.
I think gameplay-wise Generations might be the best, but in terms of levels and music, I think Unleashed wins, despite the last level being miserable and most of the Werehog levels being really un-fun. That said, Adventure and Adventure 2 feel the best to play - they are so snappy and the controls feel better than the more modern games.
So basically, I don't have an answer or opinion, but voted for Unleashed here just because I saw it was far behind Adventure, Adventure 2, and Generations
Sonic Generations is the best to play now.
Adventure and Adventure 2 are also great, but the games are rough.
Sonic Unleashed is great for the daytime part. But most of the gameplay is painful.
I hope it’s Frontiers!
I'm not sure I like generation's. Absolutely love adventure 1&2. Heroes is great but definitely needed a bit more polish. Really enjoyed colours too. Lost world is underrated. That's all I've played so far oh and forces....... so I guess my favourites are the adventure games.
Sonic Generations has the best 3D gameplay in the series and a fantastic collection of stages and music. It's the best.
Both Dreamcast Sonic Adventure titles. Nothing else IMO has come close.
I'm old , lol, but best sonic is 2d , hope the new one hits home , bit it's the speed feel that is difficult to master
Wow, so far it's exactly what you'd expect: Top 3 are Adventure, Adventure 2, & Generations, and the Honorable Mentions are Heroes, Unleashed, & Colors.
Hope we see Remakes of SA1, SA2, & Heroes and get enhanced versions of Generations (add content from the 3DS version) & Unleashed (combine the best aspects of the 360 & Wii versions for a better experience) like Colors did, but handled a bit better.
Generations by far, Adventures 1/2 were good for their time but have aged terribly.
Sonic Adventure 2 on Dreamcast was my game. Good times.
@shoeses That would be great. The first three games have good ideas but also tons of frustration that could be fixed, like the camera angles in Heroes. Unleashed is a bit more polished but some long parts are not fun at all. I liked and beat The Secret Rings on Wii, somehow.
Adventure 2 is my all time favorite. Unfortunately i doubt it will ever be possible for them to make something as impactful as the Adventure games. Those two games had incredible vision and passion behind their development
The correct answer is none. Sonic is perfect in 2d and it sucks in 3d (and no it is not about "just gotta go fast")
The original Sonic Adventure will always be one of my favorite games of all time, jank and all.
Secret Rings for me. It had major problems like not being able to turn around and how long it takes to start running that fast but overall it had great ideas and I felt it played better than using an analogue stick. Such a shame they didn't try to improve on this formula again.
On xbox though, it would be Generations.
Was Generations before and is now Frontiers. My copy arrived yesterday, I spend about 4 hours completing the first big zone today, its a fantastic game.
I'm doin it old school, Sonic Adventure. I just always love that game, something about it, probably because I first got into it as a Dreamcast launch game that always blew me away.
Sonic Robo Blast 2
Sonic Adventure 1. Sure, it's showing its age, and it has some '90s 3D jank, but it was an ambitious and interesting take on the series, and I feel that it captured the essence of 2D Sonic better than any game since then. (SA2 was good, but it took two steps forward, and two steps back.)
The modern "boost" gameplay of Generations, etc., is slick and polished, but it's so limited. It's like the Call of Duty to Sonic Adventure's Goldeneye.
PS: If you want to play SA1 now, make sure to get the Steam version and install the mod launcher. That way, you can get the superior Dreamcast version's graphics, without giving up the technical and quality-of-life improvements from later releases.
