Welcome to another edition of Pick One! For this week's weekend poll, we thought we'd lean into all the coverage that Red Dead Redemption has been getting lately by asking the question - do you prefer Red Dead or GTA more?
Obviously you can't really go wrong here. It feels like we've been waiting a decade for GTA 6 (oh wait, we have!) but GTA 5 nevertheless remains in the "Top Paid" Xbox charts for a reason, and those classic GTA experiences such as San Andreas, Vice City and GTA 4 are still a blast to play across multiple generations of Xbox consoles.
As for Red Dead, we've already talked at length about how the Xbox 360 version of Red Dead Redemption plays very similarly to the new $50 port for PlayStation, and the expense is obviously a lot less. And then there's Red Dead Redemption 2, which many would consider to be the greatest game of all time - Jack Black certainly seems to think so!
So, which camp do you generally find yourself in? Do you lean more towards Red Dead or GTA? Let us know down in the poll and comments below, and we'd love to hear your thoughts about the best game in each series as well.
Which franchise do you prefer, Red Dead or GTA? Tell us!

I love them both I'm playing gta5 on gampass now at 60fps and loving every minute of it and red dead redemption 2 is one of my favourite games ever my problem is with rockstar not the games for what they have become scummy company now
Both RDR2 and GTAV are brilliant games, and I have played them both many times.
Bear in mind that I do not play Red Dead Online, nor GTA Online.
But for the sheer level of detail involved in the world-building, I have to say that Red Dead Redemption 2 comes out on top. Just.
Rdr 100%. Cannot stand gta. Haven't even tried 5 and barely touched 4
Red Dead 2 is R*'s best game but i prefer GTA overall.
Red dead 2 is probably the best game they have done.
Overall for fun, replay, have a blast? Has to be GTA
I’d say GTA is almost like mindless fun, however both Red Dead are masterpieces in every regard so I’m gonna go with Red Dead.
Red Dead, hands down. RDR2 is one of my top 3 games ever played. GTA hasn't reached the heights of Vice City and San Andreas for years (or decades).
Almost 2/3 so far in poll choose Red Dead. Hard to believe, though many probably lost interest in GTA since the next release may be on the successor to the successor of the Series X | S.
The one that lets me break away from a boring mission when I see something more interesting going on in the distance and NOT stop the entire game with "Mission Failed" and teleport me all the way back to where the mission began.
Love RDR and RDR2 but I’ve enjoyed more GTA games so had to vote that. Been playing them right from the original GTA right up to 5. Vice City is still my favourite 😄
Red dead story is definitely alot more engrossing
they are both fantastic series and will consume them both.
That being said, RDR is the only ones I keep replaying.
It's entirely possible this is down to there being very few cowboy games, but theres been plenty of GTA styled games.
Hard to say. I've really only played Gta until recently. I grew up with the original game on ps1.
Right now I've just started RDR on switch. So we'll see.
Call it blasphemy but I really can't be bothered with RD1 - Now, even though RD2 is superb - I grew up with GTA right from minute zero back in 1997, so pretty easy choice for me there 🙂
@DennisReynolds @PsBoxSwitchOwner @Hedphelym @ironcrow86 @IOI
Are all you people, including PureXbox, forgetting Red Dead is 3 games? Not 2.
Justice for Red Dead Revolver, AKA RDR1.
Which makes Red Dead Redemption RDR2 and RDR2 RDR3.
neither i think the are better games than both
GTA for me. From the top down originals to GTA3 being one of the most important games of all time and GTA4+5 awesome fun too.
Red Dead is amazing as well. But it's X2 classics and X1 solid entry with Red Dead against x6 classics and x3 solid entries with GTA.
@darkswabber Red Dead Revolver comes from my favourite rockstar timeline. Manhunt, Warriors, Max Payne... They used to make so many good games.
@darkswabber given revolver came out around the same time as GUN - I always thought revolver lacked in comparison 🙂
@Hedphelym should’ve explicitly called it RDR in that case if they consider RDR and Revolver 2 seperate franchises.
Eitherway Revolver’s story, characters and setting are directly referenced in the 2 redemption games. Revolver is by the same people. The franchise is clearly Red Dead, not RDR. No reason to excuse a clear mistake as, and excuse my paraphrasing, “well clearly it’s a different franchise and that was clearly implied here”
I have never played any GTA game, and only started the first Red Dead Redemption but never actually finished it as at the time my game time was limited due to being a Copper and having family demands. At some point I'd like to play GTA5 and both RDR games, but it's just finding the time amongst all the other games that appeal to me...
Well RDR2 is my favorite video game ever made. So this is an easy vote. However i like GTA. I beat GTA 5 twice and look forward to seeing what they can do with 6. It’s so funny that RDR is the smaller title and yet it sold over 50 million copies. For any other dev team that would be their best selling game and focus. For Rockstar, us 50 million RDR players can’t even get an updated patch for performance on Series X. RDR and Diablo and Gears of war are my favorite gaming franchises. I log stupid amounts of hours into those. GTA is something i will beat once for sure and normally twice, but then i am kind of done with it. I am not much for the online gameplay of rockstar games.
Red Dead is boring, full of problems and rockstar refused to fix them.
GTA 5 may have a lousy soundtrack compared to previous entries, but GTA3 and Vice City blow away Red Dead 1 & 2
Neither. I'm over Rockstar's empty open-world games that offer zero narrative (RDR2 excluded).
@Kaloudz Red Dead’s worlds are better than any GTA game I agree.
What I’ve always adored with GTA has been its satirical take on the times we live in. Really starting with 3 when you could browse the ‘internet’ at a cafe leading right up to 5 and its TV Shows. It’s always took the madness of those points in time and made fun of them. I don’t envy Rockstar having to try and do the same with 6, it may even be near impossible in the current climate where everything is offensive, I think 6 will be the softest of the bunch when it comes to that and it’ll be a shame.
@darkswabber I forget that even exists haha
@Fenbops Its damn if you do damn if you don't with GTA 6 although GTA 6 will be the best selling game ever so does it even matter for R* if they cause another uproar.
Red dead for me, I only played gta San Andreas and gta v(offline), San Andreas was ok but I didn't like v, overall I had a sense of being aimless in both of them(specially in v) and I always get bore of fooling around in gta maps
Red Dead I don't like anything about the GTA series.
GTA is amazing but Red Dead Redemption is goated..
I went with Red Dead but I think both are slightly overrated.
A very hard choice and if I had to choose one over the other, that choice would change based on my overall mood. Both made by Rockstar, but 2 very different styles of open world gameplay. So I really can’t pick one over the other in any definitive way.
GTA has very clearly had a much bigger impact on the overall industry than RDR, but both are great games and each has its strengths and weaknesses.
Faith in gamers restored. Red dead ✅👍
RDR2 is an awesome looking masterpiece (still room for perfection though). GTA Online (Shark cards) changed R*. As gamers, we think that they could make some great AAA games instead of just raking the money in with bad, every gen port, or "just" simple ports.
People starting to realise that the new GTA will have more online stuff than ever before, so prefer RDR series?
GTA for me. Not really into the cowboy setting. Both very good series though.
I was hoping to find a "none" option.
Red Dead at mo as Red Dead 2 is best Rockstar game available. GTA 6 prob will change my mind, then Red Dead 3 will change again.
@Dan1283 how are they scummy?
@pip_muzz hell they used to make games period, gta v came out on ps3 and rdr2 came out 5 years later and it’s been 5 years since then
@Fenbops i think you wrong. I hope!! I think Rockstar will go against de grain, they always do. I think it be hilarious an lots of woke folk get hysterical!
@Pimpernel I’d think this too but haven’t the original writers left? I don’t think it’s happening
@Kaloudz manhunt was so good, wrapping a bin bag over someone’s head to kill them didnt get old. They tried to ban that at the time remember, I honestly don’t know if they’d be able to release something like that now.
Like @DennisReynolds says GTA will still sell like hotcakes regardless of what they do.
Single player: RDR, one of the greatest games of all time followed up somehow by another one of the greatest games of all time.
Multiplayer: neither
Overall for me it is the GTA series. Both are fun but GTA is crazy stupid fun and that counts a lot for me. Red Dead 1 and 2 may have superior stories, however GTA 4 and 5 also have good stories.
My answer to the question of which games made me feel like a kid on Xmas morning unwrapping a gift when unwrapping my just purchased video game, Red Dead or GTA, is a GTA game.
I'm actually surprised to see Red Dead Redemption take such a drastic win. Even more considering it only has two games.
I'm not including Red Dead Revolver as I believe most fans of RDR 1 & 2 either never played Revolver or even know of its existence.
However, even including RD Revolver, the massive global phenomenon that is GTA is hard to beat in terms of sheer popularity.
Or so it seemed.
I have to go with GTA. Red Dead has only had two games in its franchise proper (with Revolver really being a completely different game), and they're really good, but GTA has so many great games, and is one of the most influential franchises out there where I'm not sure what the legacy of Red Dead will be.
Believe it or not, these aren't games I've played a great deal of, but just purely for the fun factor I would go with GTA, but I do prefer the look and feel of the world in Red Dead.
GTA by a landslide. And from the sales numbers, almost everyone else thinks the same. GTA 5 has sold 185 million copies, RDR2 has sold 55 million. Both incredible numbers but clearly GTA is very much preferred.
Red Dead hands down. It has better pacing throughout.
