If you're a fan of racing games and you were playing them back in the Xbox 360 days around 2010, you'll probably remember the so-called battle between Blur and Split/Second. Both of these fantastic racers were released around the same time, and both of them ultimately never got as much appreciation as they deserved following their launches.
Split/Second was always my game - I got hooked on it following its Xbox 360 online multiplayer demo, and I'm really grateful that it's still playable on modern consoles today thanks to backwards compatibility. Blur suffered a worse fate however, as the 360 remains the only Xbox console on which it's playable, and that's a real shame.
I'm about 14 years too late, but I picked up a copy of Blur the other week - and although it's still early days, I can absolutely see why this is considered a cult classic. The game looks like a more realistic version of Mario Kart in many ways, with power-ups scattered all over the track that can be used to give you a boost or attack other racers. It doesn't feel that realistic though... above all else, this is just a game that prioritises high-speed thrills and carnage.
The campaign is split into various sections that each come with their own boss-style encounters, with the race types mixed between things like standard races, time trials and destruction stages where attacking the AI is your goal. The latter can be a lot of fun, but ultimately all of the stages are great, and there are plenty of them to keep you busy.
What really makes Blur an Xbox 360 classic is that it handles so well. It comes as no surprise considering the developer was Bizarre Creations, known for the Project Gotham Racing series amongst other things. This is a company that ended up closing in February of 2011, with Blur (and James Bond 007: Blood Stone) being their swansong.

And again, that's another reason why it's such a shame that modern Xbox fans are missing out on what Blur has to offer. The problem is, of course, that Xbox hasn't added anything to the backwards compatibility program in years now, and Blur was always an unlikely candidate due to its licensed soundtrack and array of licensed vehicles. We've seen games like Forza Horizon and Motorsport getting delisted due to licensing issues, so it's no surprise here.
If you've still got an Xbox 360 lying around though and you haven't played it this yet, it's worth keeping an eye out for a physical copy. Admittedly it's still early days for me, but I'm definitely not regretting my purchase so far, and who knows - maybe a few of us could join up for an online game at some point! After all, the servers are still live...

My friends and I still talk about Blur. We played it a lot online back in the day and it was so much fun. We thought it could be a Mario kart rival on other platforms.
well i know what im buying on my 360 next before the store closes, but from i read it might not be there already
@nomither6 Yeah, this is physical-only I believe.
The problem with these games with real brands is that the licenses have expired. Even if they wanted to bring it back, they couldn't add it to the store.
Yeah, Blur and Project Gotham Racing are at the top of my most wanted BC games.
Remember me
chronicles of Riddick escape from dark athena
Singularity
more games i would like to be backwards compatible
Glad you mentioned Split/Second that was always more my jam, but both were good.
Blur needs to come back, whether it be via backwards compatibility or (preferably, in my case) a re-release on modern hardware. The local multiplayer was a staple at game nights in my house for a good while.
It's a very cool concept for a game and one that I would have loved to have played on modern consoles. I mean I can always just pick up a disc copy and play it on an old 360 but having it digital would have been fantastic. This is definitely in my list of games I would have loved to have seen added to backwards compatibility along with the Project Gotham Racing games.
I have so many fond memories of having a bunch of friends over and playing split screen for hours. It would be amazing if this game got backward compatibility support.
Bring back the backwards compatibility program!
We need another wave of games! I scoffed at the last Xbox conference when the new president lady said "here at Xbox we are committed to game preservation".
Yeah right.
This is why emulation is so important.
@dreadful They are commited, but it's up to third parties to renew expired licenses if they want the games available again. This isn't really on Microsoft. They've done pretty much all they can with the titles they're allowed to work on.
Now I am trying to remember if i own this game. Guess I better go digging through my boxes.
Forget Blur, I'd like PGR 3. I know it's never going to happen, but I can dream.
Well Pitfall and Blur for sure. So many Activision ones to let be on there. Same with Disney and Split Second but it had licensed cars as well I think? It's why Wreckfest/Flatout and Burnout worked well yet Indies waste their money on licensing as well and dull game modes/car classes and I wonder where the money went for the safeness of the game HMMMM.
Blur it's the car licenses or music, so at least Grid 2 is there I guess with it's timing of BC and licensing same with Autosport to be on phones and Switch. Still a good game I want to come back to for some missions IF I can beat them and inch a bit further in the game or just make a new save.
Geometry Wars as well even if 3 is on modern consoles.
I'd take ANY CODs of Xbox OG era not on there or the Pitfall give us that or a remaster/remake or a NEW Pitfall game to compete with Tomb Raider/Uncharted/Indy/Tad/Syberia (even if point and click) or any other types, Singularity, Prototype, TimeShift and more we need to see.
Many games need BC during the time they could with the licenses. PGR 1 & 2 are still BC on 360 and not delisted at least when I played them in 2020, assume they still work now.
Even checking out City Racer as the 6th gen equivalent is interesting.
I've been waiting for this to happen. It needs more credit. Yes there a lot of racing games nothing like Blur is like Mario Cart for adults. Or Mario Cart equivalence for the Xbox. I hope it does happen one day... Now that Xbox seems to be going digital. No discs... Which I don't agree with but that's me. Unfortunately my copy of blur got damaged. Back in the 360 lol 😆. Backwards compatibility needs to happen... A man can dream and hope.
Great game and I still have my original copy. I wish it would become backwards compatible but it's a good reason to keep hold of an xbox 360
@NicolausCamp Some games were passed over by MS, despite the publishers being willing to put them on BC.
In Blur's case, among many others, it was most likely a licensing issue, but I'm sure there are plenty of other games (especially on the original Xbox) that MS could've added before closing the back compat program.
