Mojang Studios got all of our hopes up when the Minecraft Preview on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S added ray tracing support earlier this week, but unfortunately it's being taken away again due to an unexpected error.
The team has revealed that this was prototype code that was never actually supposed to be added to the Minecraft Preview (at least not yet), and therefore they're having to remove the ray tracing features:
As you can see in the tweet above, Mojang says that despite the accidental addition of ray tracing this week, its presence "doesn't signal near future plans to bring raytracing support to consoles", so we might still be waiting a while.
It's a disappointment, but it at least signifies that the team is working to implement ray tracing in Minecraft at some point on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, and fingers crossed it won't be too long until that becomes a reality.

This is really annoying. It was one of the main things that kept being talked about for next gen and they still haven’t delivered.
Honestly, if you have RTX on a PC there's several issues. Sign text and particles have Z buff issues similar to GTA III Definitive rain. Snow golem head reflections float over the golem's derpy snow texture. Horses without armor are black. You need to bring your own resource pack to enable RTX in survival. DLSS is woefully out of date and has tons of ghosting, FSR isn't supported and the built-in upscaling for AMD Radeon and Intel ARC GPU is mediocre at best. That in particular hurts RTX on console. I still use Minecraft RTX with Kelly's RTX pack, but it's far from what people hype it up to be. It feels like it's been in beta for a year no progress. And given how GPU are unobtainium I'm glad Mojang put it on the back burner. But now that the cave update part II is out, it'd be nice if Mojang actually fixed Render Dragon's RT issues.
What have they done since Microsoft bought them?
@LifelessLimey made MS a ton of money on merch and microtransactions! Very little on the game itself though.
So frustrating. Was looking forward to this enormously. Feel we need more than 'it was an error' type post.
