One of the games we mentioned in today's "out now" article is Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival, and looking at the initial reviews that have been published over the past few hours, it's hard to know what to make of this one.

While some reviewers seem to have really enjoyed it and are pushing towards the high end in terms of scores, others have been disappointed and have gone as low as 5/10 (or even slightly lower).

So, let's take a look at some of the impressions for this one so far:

Insider Gaming (9/10)

"An unexpected gem in almost every way. I don't think many were crying out for a Hellraiser game, but everyone will be demanding a sequel to Revival, as Saber's horror show delivers a compelling, rich journey through pain and pleasure."

GamingTrend (8.5/10)

"Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival is an excellent entry into the horror genre and an even better entry into the Hellraiser universe. It pushes boundaries, revels in the uncomfortable, and makes you complicit in its cruelty through a suffering-based combat system in a world that forces you to look at every gory detail. Gorgeous visuals, stomach-churning sound design, and a career-capping return from Doug Bradley make it a must-play for horror fans, provided they have the stomach for it."

Giant Bomb (8/10)

"I am pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed Hellraiser: Revival. Its respect for its source material is apparent throughout, with the Labyrinth, the Cenobites, and the Genesis Configuration being standout pieces of the puzzle. The rest of the game isn't reinventing the wheel for first-person horror, but the "don't fix what isn't broken" approach works just fine here. The squeamish need not apply, as there are moments made to make your skin crawl, but even the most horror-averse people can have a great time in this Labyrinth."

Steam Hype (7/10)

"Every bit as horny, gory and transgressive as it should be. When Hellraiser: Revival is confident enough to just be Hellraiser, it's an excellent game. When it's riffing off other survival horror greats, it's merely good, but it's never less than entertaining."

IGN (6/10)

"While the studded scalp of otherworld antagonist Pinhead absolutely looks the part, it’s a shame that little else in Hellraiser: Revival has been nailed to anywhere near the same extent."

Push Square (5/10)

"Clive Barker’s Hellraiser Revival is a frustrating experience, as for every one thing it does really well, it does two things that will annoy the life out of you. Part of me was willing to see past the jank, as you have a pretty niche horror title coming to life in a new medium, and I certainly respect it for giving it a go. However, too often its design choices would irritate me, hold me back from progressing, or just straight up make me not want to play. While it’s got little sparks of something special in there, Hellraiser: Revival is more pain than pleasure."

Game Informer (4.5/10)

"After watching Hellraiser: Revival’s finale stumble through the same visual and audio potholes plaguing the rest of the journey, I was angry. But upon taking time to cool down and reflect, my ire shifted to disappointment and relief that I didn't have to play more. During the rare moments Hellraiser: Revival isn't on fire in some way, it's a halfway respectable take on the popular horror franchise. I just wish playing it didn't so often feel like enduring the twisted machinations of Pinhead himself."

As things stand, Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival has a Metacritic score of 69 for PS5 (the platform with the most reviews), while the PC and Xbox versions are both sitting on 74.

It certainly doesn't sound like a game you should write off by any means - especially because it's only £34.99 / $39.99 on the Xbox Store, and it comes with Xbox Play Anywhere support (meaning a free PC version) as well.

Just keep in mind that opinions are varying significantly, so it's not a guaranteed home run.
