The leak comes from Luke JC on YouTube, who was able to access an "entire test world map for Contraband" through a Steam Beta build of Avalanche Studios' fishing game. According to the video, the test map is dated February 18, 2022, more than four years prior to Contraband getting cancelled. It features "early block outs, tons of props, vehicles, and environment concepts".
In the video at the bottom of this article, you can see various locations from Contraband's hidden test build, ranging from a floating level and sunken temple, to a grand palace, NPC-filled towns, markets and even a few mission areas.
What we found particularly interesting was the surprising amount of detail in certain areas. Neon lights, bathrooms, and sections of the town appeared much further along in development than others. Character, weapon, and vehicle models also featured, with a few of the old-timey cars even being completely drivable.
There's a whole load more, and if you're interested, here's a look at the leaked test world:
Sadly, Contraband is well and truly dead at this point, but it's still pretty cool to finally see some of the extremely early work Avalanche Studios was doing with the game. More than anything, it's just amusing to find all of this stuff hidden away in a random fishing game.
