Oh boy, reviews are in for Valve's Steam Machine with its biggest talking point being, as expected, how much the device costs – and subsequently what it could mean for Xbox's next "Project Helix" console.
Technically speaking, the Steam Machine is more of an entry-level PC than it is a video game console, so a direct comparison may be a little off here.
As it stands, if you're willing to fork over the cash, you can snag Valve's new hardware for $1049 / £879 / €1039 as a standalone 512GB model, or if you're happy shelling out for more storage, the 2TB version comes in at a whopping $1349 / £1208 / €1428.
Comparably, Microsoft's current flagship console, the Xbox Series X, will set you back roughly $649 / £499 / €599, whilst Sony's PS5 Pro can cost $899 / £798 / €899.
That's an awful lot of money, yet altogether unsurprising given the ongoing RAM crisis and the skyrocketing prices of PC parts. Discussion online naturally progressed towards the idea of delaying Project Helix until manufacturing costs return to a sustainable level.
In an interview with Bloomberg Tech earlier this month, Xbox boss Asha Sharma acknowledged the prospect of Project Helix shipping with an unaffordable price tag, seemingly outlining her plan to counter rising costs:
"It's natural that prices go up, every generation around us is raising prices, but I don't think you can raise prices through the hardware crisis that we're seeing, and so it will require fundamental change in terms of how we innovate and how we think about the business models and how we go bring this to market, and we're working on that."
The Xbox community has taken to Reddit to discuss what a $1000+ Steam Machine might mean for our wallets in relation to Xbox's Project Helix, which is reportedly a hybrid PC/console, supporting both Xbox and PC games.
Here's a selection of comments:
"If Xbox Helix came out at $1000+ im out."
"Next gen needs delaying because there's no way it's going to be any cheaper"
"I don’t think delaying will do anything either, prices will only continue to hike"
