Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy was announced during last year's Xbox Games Showcase, and now, thanks to an early preview, we've got the first word on what the game is actually like to sit down and play.
If you're unfamiliar with the series, Resonance is a prequel story to the generally favourable A Plague Tale: Requiem, a gorgeous action-adventure game, although it seems this new entry looks to shake things up.
Here's what the first previews are saying about Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy:
IGN
Two chapters in, this is plainly the best A Plague Tale has ever played, the rare third entry that reinvents the formula instead of nudging it. The combat is fast and satisfying, the puzzles are clever without turning obtuse, the island looks and feels as encompassing as the most glorious environments from Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, and the skill tree has clear room to open up...But two chapters are certainly enough to make Resonance one of the most exciting things on our 2026 calendar, and that's not something I expected to say about A Plague Tale with a combat overhaul.
Eurogamer
There's a lot that's different in Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, then - it really is a bold departure for the series. But the undeniable hallmarks of the Plague Tale series are here. Once again, this is an extravagantly realised adventure tinged in the supernatural, and one that's thick with emotion and focused on cinematic presentation and flair. And again it's the thrill of being someone touched by a powerful destiny, and their journey to incredible places no person has been for thousands of years, that propels us. It's perhaps slightly brighter in tone and setting than the previous Plague Tale adventures, but it's unmistakably still A Plague Tale.

Combat in the game is fast and punishing. Sophia fights with a sword and dagger, using the sword to block and parry, while the dagger is her finisher. Compared to the first two Plague Tale titles, Resonance feels fantastic. Sophia is fast, agile, strong, and deadly.
But Why Tho?
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is, in many ways, what the modern Tomb Raider trilogy was to its predecessors. Massive combat improvements have already made fights more intricate, rewarding, and fun. Exploring has also evolved to constantly bear fruit and never be a waste of time. Ultimately, the changes to storytelling and gameplay are exactly what A Plague Tale needed, without losing the heart Asobo is known for.
Looking good so far, it seems. Plenty of praise and excited remarks from the outlets to hype you up if Asobo's next game is on your wishlist.
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is teed up to launch August 27th on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, and Cloud, and will also be available as a day one release on Xbox Game Pass.
