Back in late March, Microsoft unveiled a new mobile controller known as the Backbone One Xbox Edition, and various critics have been getting their hands on it recently - resulting in some very impressive initial reviews.
As a reminder, the Backbone One Xbox Edition is priced at $109.99 and supports both Android and iOS devices, designed to be the ultimate way to play Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Remote Play titles on your phone.
Backbone One is the mobile controller you can take anywhere. Our compact design and plug-and-play simplicity make it easier than ever to play Xbox games wherever you go. Showcase your style with the translucent Xbox green design that reflects the legacy of Xbox and invites you to be legendary.

There are other versions of the Backbone One available as well, so if you're looking for something a little less pricey, that option is available to you. Today though, we're going to focus specifically on the all-new Xbox Edition of it.
So, here's what the reviews are saying about the Backbone One Xbox Edition:
Windows Central (Positive)
From the minute I pulled the Backbone One Xbox Edition mobile controller out of the box, I was struck by its beautiful transparent casing that comes in a deep Halo green. It reminds me of the Limited Edition Xbox Crystal Console from 2004.
Overall, this Xbox Edition controller has the same pros and cons pointed out in our original Backbone One review; build quality is excellent, there's no wobble, it's easy to use, and the controls are snappy and responsive.
Pocket Tactics (9/10)
The Backbone Xbox Edition controller cements itself as the definitive way to play Xbox Game Pass on mobile. Adorned with a stunning design that pays homage to Xbox history, Backbone’s best-in-class build quality makes it a boon for both Android and iOS users. Accompanied by the fantastic Backbone app, the gap between console and mobile gaming is smaller than before.
Android Authority (4.5/5)
The Backbone One Xbox Edition is a killer mobile controller for fans of the original Xbox console. The premium price might turn some gamers toward more affordable mobile controllers, but the premium build is light and comfortable, and the gameplay experience is second to none.
BGR (4.5/5)
For my money, there’s really not a better mobile controller on the market — especially one this compact that actually attaches directly to your phone. The only issue is that you will pay a slight premium for the Xbox Edition, as it costs $10 more than the other two controllers. That might be a price you’re willing to pay, especially if you plan to spend most of your time with the controller streaming Xbox games. Otherwise, save a few bucks and snag one of the others.
So, there you go! If you're keen on picking up the Backbone One Xbox Edition, it sounds like you'll be getting a great device. Alternatively, save a little money and pick up one of the older Backbone One devices - it's your call!
Don't forget we've potentially got an ASUS Xbox handheld on the way this year too, so if you're keen on that, it might be worth waiting a bit. We're expecting that device to be a lot more expensive than the Backbone One Xbox Edition though!

The Backbone controller hardware is brilliant, best phone controller I’ve used.
But none of these reviews seems to mention that the “fantastic Backbone app” requires an annual subscription to unlock all the features. That’s £34.99 a year on top of a £100 controller. To me this is far too much and a bit of a con. ymmv
That's a bit expensive for a glorified Xbox controller that can hold your phone!
@themightyant Come again? What on earth do they lock behind a subscription? O_o I assume the app sub makes no difference to those just wanting to play Xbox Cloud?
I love my Crossbone controller! I've spent a lot of time at the doctor this year and having a boatload of emulators, Xbox streaming and the optional subscription to the Backbone library, I've always got a ton of choices.
Travels GREAT too!
@themightyant What features are you referring to? The sub offers a pretty decent game library and an extended warranty but I was able to do literally everything with my Backbone without subscribing.
@Kaloudz @daftnate I don't have a full list, but their website says 20+ features are unlocked. I know one that bothered me was using your Backbone with other devices (like iPad or PC) is locked behind the £35 a year subscription. That meant I either needed to carry multiple controllers or pay.
@themightyant Ah thanks man. Yeah not for me then. I don't get why you'd sell a product like that, and put a sub fee to it. It doesn't make any sense at all to me. Why not get a premium one and pay less in the long-run.
