The use of a VPN is nothing surprising in this day and age, and there are all sorts of reasons why you might want to go down that route, but Xbox fans are being warned that it could lead to an indefinite ban if you do so.
This originates from the Xbox price comparison website Xbox-Now, which is displaying a warning on its front page that suggests to "not use a VPN at the moment because some people from our Discord were currently banned indefinitely for using VPN."
A user known as 'Rho' also took to the Discord platform to explain the circumstances behind their ban:

This user is still banned at the time of writing, but they shared an update from another user who recently got their account reinstated, and Microsoft provided a detailed explanation behind it. According to Xbox's support team, that particular ban was for "exploiting the differences in pricing" on the Xbox Store rather than anything specific to the VPN.
This account was suspended for the fraudulent acquisition or use of Xbox content. In this instance, your account was found to be purchasing content from out-of-region marketplaces, exploiting the differences in pricing between regions or countries that are not the region or country of the account.
As a sign of trust and good faith, we will be lifting the permanent account suspension and trust that this account, and other accounts and devices that you own do not participate in these types of fraudulent activity.
Despite this, Rho says they "want to stress" that the Xbox Community Standards "do not prohibit this practice" and that "the rule cited is essentially fabricated", which is a key source of their frustration when it comes to these bans.
Looking at it from our side, we'd suggest two things here - the first is that Microsoft needs to make it as clear as possible what the rules are surrounding the use of VPNs for all Xbox users. The second is that if you are thinking of buying games from "out-of-region marketplaces", the safe bet is just to avoid it entirely. You might save a little money in the long run, but the evidence clearly shows you're risking a permanent ban from the Xbox team.
What do you make of all this? Let us know down in the comments section below.

I suppose this was a bubble that would inevitably burst at some point. I know of many folks both on Xbox and PSN that purchase from other store fronts and save a fair amount.
No more of those I’m playing Atomfall from New Zealand messages … shame
@Weebleman It’s impossible to do on PlayStation, only by creating a new account but it’s not even worth it as they don’t have regional pricing in many countries and just charge in USD, which is noticeably more expensive than platforms that have regional pricing, Xbox, Steam and even the Nintendo eShop.
On Xbox you’d just buy a code, enable VPN and redeem that code in your account, I’d be lying if I said I never did it but I always knew it had some risk, however I haven’t bought anything for Xbox in more than a year and my account is fine.
@AlwaysPlaying That will still happen I imagine, because it's not VPN, it's simply changing the region on the console in the settings area.
Well, gotta make sure I don't accidently turn my VPN on lol. Good to know.
As it should be. You have to wonder how much more money would Game Pass subs rake in if MS had been doing this from the start.
@IOI while done a different way you get the same result. Just open an account registered in Turkey, japan or another country, set the console as your main, buy a localised psn voucher and you can buy games cheap as chips and play them on your own.
Not that I condone this behaviour, of course.
I never understood the appeal of VPNs, unless you are doing something illegally.
I knew that would never last glad a never did it!
Patience is a virtue after all🕺
@Tasuki VPNs are good for countries with strong censorship laws. It allows them to view news from other sources, access streaming services that are blocked etc. So yeah, technically in their country it is "illegal" but not every "illegal" thing has to be nefarious in nature.
There are also people like me who cannot buy games otherwise because of the region..I live in Bulgaria(Europe) but Bulgaria is not officially supported by Xbox so I couldn't buy games or dlc without a vpn..
I am going to heed this warning, the last time I did this was last year so gunna just leave it at that.
Does this apply to buying from e.g Iceland when you are in the UK ? (It just lets you do it.)
The screws continue to tighten
Microsoft greed has consumed everything Xbox. Many saw it coming and left the platform and they wonder why
you have to be dumb not to use a vpn these days..
I have little sympathy for people abusing the system just to get cheaper games. Regional pricing exists for a reason, not to enable people in wealthier countries getting games for less. Hopefully a short ban will stop them doing it again in future, with the threat of worse.
Why should AAA game cost $X in country Y and $X-a lot in country Z. Regional pricing from digital/internet storefronts is weird, and totally contrary to the global market. Even a car costs $X in both countries unless it was manufactured on-site.
@themightyant
This thinking is not aligned with global markets
@themightyant
And poor people exist in wealthy countries, so you are for denying them?
Since games like “Baldur's Gate 3” are not available in our country's stores, changing regions is a must.
First of all, Microsoft should improve from there.
I use a VPN all the the time in order to buy CD Keys from regions like Brazil, India and Turkey because the game prices for these regions are way cheaper…in order to be on the safe side I’ll have to stop doing that for awhile tho and see how this plays out
It wouldn't surprise me if some of the people being banned are the same people who complain on Reddit in the Microsoft rewards section that they can't reclaim points because they've been farming points and running scripts....
@TheGiraffe video games are a luxury, not a necessity. If you can’t afford something, you can’t have it. Expecting it is entitlement.
The beautiful thing about video games is that games prices fall off a cliff, all you have to is wait. Play games that are 1+ years old not the latest releases. Most 2+ year old games can be bought on eBay for around £20, often less, and then sold for a similar amount. Comparatively it can be an inexpensive hobby if you do this.

This is categorically FALSE, 10 seconds of research would have told you this was false.
Here is the global car index and here is an example of different regional pricing for cars. E.g. a VW Passat is £16k in Greece, but £36k in Brazil. Or average prices of all passenger cars in 2020: 25k in Greece, 46k in Switzerland.
The same is true of every product and commodity.
Globalisation is deemed wonderful by large Corporations and the politicians they own, when they lay people off and move jobs overseas to exploit cheap labour.
Yet if we embrace the new global market by purchasing digital items from other territories, it is suddenly “harmful”.
Hmmmm very interesting.
@Rabid_Gamer there are always exceptions that should be allowed imho e.g.
I didn’t say there should be a blanket ban on VPNs, nor did Microsoft. They are specifically targeting people abusing VPN to get games that ARE available in their country cheaper elsewhere. They are not the same situations.
@h3s In 2018 the EU passed an anti-geoblocking law requiring that all EU versions of storefronts be usable by anyone within the EU. As we didn't leave until 2020 we inherited that law, so it's a legal requirement that MS allow UK residents to purchase things on the EU storefronts. So that's why you can just do that.
@TheGiraffe Yeah, there is no question wealthy countries also have significant amounts of their population who are not wealthy... Being in debt/bankrupt, can't leave parents house/homeless, or one paycheck away from being broke or one illness from also being broke (be it inability to work/earn income and/or medical bills)
But it would be impossible to price products based on your bank account balance or income level, so instead there is regional pricing.
I have always thought the buy codes from say India & VPN very sketchy, so I have not & wouldn't do that. I'm not surprised there could be blowback on people's accounts.
I would rather save money by buying non-recent highly rated games.
Would cd keys from other countries work or does that require a vpn also?
