A year ago, Xbox introduced its 'Indie Selects' program as a way to highlight a batch of indie titles each and every month - and at the program's one-year anniversary, the team has picked out six must-play indies from 2024.
Team Xbox says that this selection showcases "six top Indie Selects titles from 2024 that we believe you need to play" - and remember, these have been purposefully selected as non-Game Pass titles to give those releases some extra recognition.
Without further ado, here are Microsoft's top Indie Selects picks from the last year:

Xbox adds that "each of these titles are a great representation of what our industry strives to achieve", and we must say, these are some rather good choices from the team. In fact, we reviewed three of these 2024 indies ourselves here at Pure Xbox and really enjoyed each and every one of them - so we'll throw those written reviews down below.
Finally, Microsoft has created a little Indie Selects Anniversary Collection area on the Xbox Store, for those of you that want to have a look at these and see if you're tempted into picking any up. Here's how to navigate to the collection:
- From Xbox Home, select Store
- On Store go to the left navigation bar and select Games.
- On the Games home page scroll down until you see the collection!
Have you played any of these titles? Tempted to grab the ones you missed? Talk to us about the selection down below!

On the topic of indies, saw on twitter that a game called Berserk Boy isn't releasing on Xbox after being shown three years ago.

Never tried any of these myself (probably due to playing mostly GP games). Might pick up one or two.
Animal Well is one of the best games I have played in years. Go in blind. You will either like it or not. Inspired game design.
Plucky Squire was OK. Nice visuals and vibe, but the puzzles were far too basic and it had a habit of taking control away from you every new screen (which is a lot). I heard they improved this aspect though. I still liked it.
Yeah, they should put more of them on game pass. We don’t get the indies we used to.
@JON22 that’s too bad. I’d like to try that one
I think most of these games got a lot of attention, including some game of the year nominations. But a little more love never hurts. I have not tried any myself. I was too afraid Balatro would take over my life, and the others for various reasons. I will play Neva at some point, I have it wishlisted for when I have a backlog break. But they all look to be fantastic quality!
