Xbox Game Pass has helped Microsoft's gaming division boom in recent years with its new titles available day one on the service, and while it's not necessarily everyone's cup of tea, there are still millions of fans out there.
This includes industry legend and DOOM creator John Romero, who recently praised Xbox's subscription service during a chat with the YouTube channel 'Xbox Expansion Pass' about the upcoming release of DOOM: The Dark Ages and various other DOOM-related topics.
In response to a question referencing DOOM's "shareware" distribution back in the day, Romero says he loves Game Pass and thinks it's not only working wonders for game companies but also making games easier to access:
John Romero: "I love it, I mean - who doesn't love Game Pass, it's Netflix for games, I mean who doesn't want that? It's great because it's 'try before you buy' - you try something, install it, if you like it, dive in and go buy the expansions - go get the rest of it.
It's a really great way just to try stuff, one thing after another thing, because really the barrier for people to play games is just access to those games, it's like knowing those games exist, and Game Pass is like here they are! It's really great to just have that visibility and discovery right there...it doesn't hurt the game companies that made those games...it's all good, there's nothing bad about it."
He goes on to compare its success to the popularity of streaming services. As for Romero's thoughts about the new direction in DOOM: The Dark Ages - he thinks the work id Software has done on the modern reboot of the series, in general, is "great":
"It's kind of like the Wolfenstein series had to go in a different direction, you know, it's been around for decades 'let's do something new with the story'. I mean, who doesn't love 'Army of Darkness' where you go back into the past with modern weapons and just blow away medieval idiots, you know."
DOOM: The Dark Ages is due to launch "day one" on Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Series X|S on May 15, 2025.
Romero's comments follow Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer reiterating over the past week how the tech giant's goal is to make gaming more accessible and Xbox's IP bigger than ever with its new strategy.
How do you feel about Game Pass going forward? Will you be checking out DOOM: The Dark Ages on Microsoft's service, or purchasing it standalone? Let us know in the comments.

Gamepass is great. I still end up eventually purchasing a lot of the games, even the 1st party stuff but having gamepass is nice for trying games or accessing them from pc/handhelds/cloud.
Gamepass is the best deal in gaming no doubt!!
He's not wrong.
Take the Yakuza/LAD games. No amount of good review can offset their being 8 of the damn things. Even at discounted prices that adds up.
Flash forward to now after the games were on gamepass, I bought every entry since (except Ishin).
That simply wouldn't have happened without gamepass.
Totally agree with him. There are so many games I don't know if i'd like, maybe it's a genre I'm not keen on, or reviews were average, but with Game Pass you can try for yourself. It makes my gaming life richer and more varied.
Gamepass let me know Bethesda style isn’t for me even after all the awards and fan praise
Carmack and Romero knew about how to make games more easily accessible to the masses and how that drives sales as well as interest in games. They famously gave away the first episode of Doom (1993), and if you wanted more you had to buy the other two episodes. And yeah, the first Doom was episodic originally for those that didn’t know! First episode was shareware, and last two were mail order only at the time.

He says it as it is 100%. You can't beat GP for value imo. It's flawless.
Honestly GP is not marketed enough imo.
When I talk to my non-gaming friends, they usually dont know what GP is.
Problem is people do not consume games in a same manner as netflix shows.
Naturally casuals play just a bunch of games per year and high chance is couple of games wont be in GP.
Thats in my opinion the real barrier that prob never be breached.
However for those who either don't care about extra sub for $20, or know ways to buy cheaper or play enough games to make money back (very easy when in 2025 you are getting value of $500 or say just from day 1 games only!) - its a no brainer.
For me GP is…not even a discussion.
New COD+ GP core for online (that you need anyways to play COD MP) costs about the same as full year of GPU if you use stacking/conversion.
So i can play one game or 400 games including that game for the same price lol. And next year new cod releases so I you again have to buy it and owning older cod doesnt make sense as they are always on service.
@Isolte most of that is mobile. Throwing money at crap.
Nobody should want it. Having no exclusives reduces the need for multiple consoles, in turn meaning we only need one console maker which then due to lack competition will stifle the creative process. I mean why make a console as good as you can when you have no competition to beat. Competition drives creation. This approach of Microsoft is good for them because it's a shortcut to making money because they failed with their consoles so instead of trying to build a better product they just go mutli-platform to tap into a revenu stream they wouldn't have without this new approach. It's lazy and a money grabbing exercise from Microsoft. It's good for gamers in the short term, but long term it will lead to disaster for gamers.
Gamepass is great, I've been subscribed since it came out. For me it's been worth it for sure. I have got to play and experience some great games because of it.
I'm subscribed until November this year as I did the last remaining conversion trick last year to get 18 months for about £80 and for that price it's great value but I'm not sure I'd ever pay full price for it as I play so many games outside of it. Still it is a great option to have and I'm currently playing Indian Jones that way but I'll probably buy Doom as that's a game I'll be playing for years to come
I love and hate GP. I love having access to games I'd never buy up front. The bad news for my wallet, I've quadrupled my game library because of GP! 🤣
