Xbox Series X|S Architect Officially Named 'VP Of Next-Generation' At Microsoft

Series x is an amazing console, great form factor, great ability and great features like quick resume.
But being honest and seeing what Sonys own studios do with a PS5 a less power console by about 2 tflops, we really really have not seen what the series x can really produce.

Unfortunately this is the result of Xbox developers having to produce for many devices be it series x and series s, PC, other devices and cloud.
Of course time constraints are there as well.

Unlike the past where Xbox studios were dedicated to produce on one single console.
That’s why both Sony and Nintendo in house teams get that amazing best ever out of their own consoles, something to aspire to, for other developers.

The Series X is wonderfully engineered, so next-gen Xbox is in good hands. They have been following the handheld trends lately, so I think it's not going to be cloud-based or a streaming device like PS Portal, but a proper handheld console. It was leaked that they will be using the power of the client and the cloud, that's the intriguing part.

A humongous mountain to climb. How to make a console that has no exclusive content attractive to a mass audience? Good luck to him, for all our sakes!

@OldGamer999 Right, but graphically, besides Nintendo precisely (because of the hardware), developers have reached diminishing returns. Incredible graphics can be done on the current generation (Hellblade II). What else can they do besides getting extra room for 60fps? It will all depend on the studios next generation, and some of the Xbox studios know how to make excellent graphics: Ninja Theory, Rare, The Coalition, Id, Machine Games, Playground, Treyarch (Black Ops 6), etc.

If different Windows PC configurations is not a problem, different Windows console configurations should not be a problem, especially next generation, if the memory of Series S has been a problem this generation, like some say.

Can and do are two different things, @Banjo-. Call of Duty: Vanguard did look nice, but truthfully was not much of a step up from their previous game, and they were not owned by Microsoft when that released. Of your list, the only first-party developer to release a game this generation is Ninja, and whilst it did look incredible, and I very much enjoyed it, it was basically a walking simulator most of the time, and yet Ninja were still unable to hit 60fps....

Ronald is one of the few faces I have respect for over at Team Green. Phil is a marionette, Bond is easily flustered when put on the spot and doesn’t seem to know what her left hand is doing at any given moment, and Satya is all numbers/money and wouldn’t know a good game if a truckfull fell out of the sky and landed on him. At least Jason Ronald is good at what he does.

Edit—realized I forgot to even mention Matt Booty. Probably because he’s entirely forgettable and utterly useless.

There is no way I'm passing on a next-gen console designed by someone sporting a beard like Jason Ronald. The Series X is an awesomely engineered piece of hardware.

Both Series consoles are great machines. Yes, even Series S (had both). The only obstacle for their successors is their pointlessness in the light of the recent MS policy shift (Your car cigarette lighter is an Xbox etc).

Unless something changes with MS strategy and they dont release all their games on other consoles in the future, I’ll be getting one. Otherwise its sort of pointless having an Xbox next gen.

As much as I know not to believe rumors, it does feel more and more like Xbox is going for a next gen launch in 2026 to coincide with their quarter of a century. It'd be neat if they could kick off the gen with a Series X, some kind of handheld, and I still want a Series S like device (unless they manage to deliver a handheld that packs a punch without having a high price (currently the cheapest handheld is the Nintendo Switch... launch launched with weaker hardware than the Xbox One; the Steam Deck boasts being as power as a PS4 and is minimum $100 mroe than a Switch)). Additionally, it'd be interesting if the handheld is a hybrid device to start bridging the console and PC gap. Still curious if they'll do a cloud device for $200 or less (if not $100 or less) as well. Really it's all up in the air for the next Xbox. Microsoft is pooling together its gaming resources on PC and console together more than ever.

@OldGamer999 Microsoft wanted developers to code smarter.

Sony didn't change anything, just gave developers more power to do the same.

On one hand, PS5 was great for developers because they could continue to do what they always had been doing to get the best results and faster.

On the other hand, it does nothing to address issues with game engines or really progress game development much beyond the PS4 era. Developers just keep doing the same old thing.

Unfortunately, most developers aren't really given any time to adapt to new techniques due to publisher demands. Developers couldn't spend time optimizing for the split-memory pool of the Series consoles.

Having the Series S requirement also means having to consider more constrained hardware - so, for the sake of time, developers really just take a "nuclear option" for that console and cut things down probably more than necessary and cap games at 30fps.

Quite honestly, the PS5 being the lead platform has stagnated a lot more than just Series consoles. All these "bad ports" on PC are a result of publishers/developers focusing so much on PlayStation and not enough time on other platforms.

The thing is, when a developer is given time, good things happen across the industry.

Baldur's Gate 3 is probably the "best" example of where having more challenging hardware can lead to a better code game. All the work the developers did to optimize for Series S led to huge memory savings for the game that provided boosts to all platforms.

It'll be interesting to see if the Series S development for Black Myth Wukong will lead to any improvements to the PS5/Series X version.

I'm not knocking Sony for this: it wasn't trying to make things more difficult for developers. That's a huge win for the platform from a publisher perspective. It's just that a side effect of this meant less progress in actual game engines aside from shinier coats of paint.

It'll be interesting to see if Microsoft will continue down the path of trying to make developers work "smarter" or if it will go back to a more "traditional" configuration with the next hardware.

I would love to see Microsoft move away from amd next generation and try to do something with nvidia. Yes, they would probably have to pay a premium for such a move. But the handheld should be affordable if switch 2 and their all but confirmed nvidia deal is anything to go by, and the high end console could be targeting a similar price point to the ps5 pro.

Microsoft are struggling to compete directly with Sony right now. An affordable handheld for the casual and premium high end traditional console all powered by cutting edge nvidia technologies would really give them a significant point of difference and advantage over Sony who have already committed to amd for ps6.

On one hand, it's hilarious to watch everyone at Xbox move up as the product bombs a second generation in a row. Aaron Greenberg especially, what a disaster.

On the other, I love the Series X hardware, I honestly think it's my favorite console design of all time, the split mobo enabling its excellent cooling and also its shape which i find gorgeous. Jason Ronald is one of the only people there who I feel has done a great job.

All consoles this gen are really well made powerful machines hopefully the generation jump to the next box isn't only in resolution and fps though!

What's the point though?
If Microsoft kept Xbox games exclusive, and didn't bring Xbox and Game Pass, to basically everything, then I would gladly buy the next Xbox. But with the same games also coming to Playstation?

I really miss the brutal, but also healthy, competition, between them during the ps3/360 era.

Unless this "next generation" is just a handheld, can we finally stop saying there will be no more Xbox consoles?
