The first season of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 officially arrived yesterday, and that meant a huge update arrived for the game across all platforms. The update seemed to go smoothly for most... aside from on the Xbox App for PC.
Yesterday, one of the biggest trends on Google (yes, we obviously monitor those!) was an array of searches related to "Xbox app slow download" - and other phrases along those lines. Basically, people were searching for ways to try and figure out why they couldn't download the update any faster... which clearly isn't an ideal scenario for Microsoft.
Delve deeper, and you'll find that it was a fairly big topic on social media - here are just a few examples:
So, it turns out the best solution was to download the update via the Microsoft Store rather than directly on the Xbox app, which obviously isn't the way that Team Xbox intends it - but it was a necessary step for many last night.
That's Black Ops 6, then, but what about everything else? Well, for the most part, we've found that the Xbox PC app has been good for us, and there definitely aren't as many complaints on a regular basis about its speeds... but they still crop up for sure. Xbox is seemingly on the case, as you can see in this example - where the user known as "mistur_niceguy" is a verified Xbox engineer. This specific exchange was from five months ago:
PC is a very difficult beast when you consider all the different configurations and settings that users are wielding, so it's bound to result in download issues for certain people at certain times. Given that PC is becoming such a big focus for Xbox these days though, Microsoft will surely be keen to avoid a repeat of yesterday's Black Ops 6 saga.

- I actually think they're terrible overall!

Just the app?
I was getting brutally slow download speeds on Series X last night and I wasn't even downloading Black Ops.
Well yeah, this has always been a thing. I get literally 10x faster download speeds on steam than on the Xbox app.
Sometimes good help is all people need.
I put in a report once for The Darkness having red pixels all over the screen when running on my Series X. I used the e-mail option for sending a bug report to engineers.
Nothing. Not a thing. No reply, nothing. I checked up on the bug report myself to find out they couldn't reproduce it and closed the bug.
No response telling me I may need to send my Series X in for repairs. No further investigation. Nothing.
I am sure The Darkness running on Series X isn't a high priority effort, but a follow-up would have been nice.
It was the only game that did this strange "red pixel" thing. So I am not exactly sure what was happening. I got rid of my Series X, so it's a non-issue now.
I've had constant download issues across multiple Series X and S consoles. Something's going on with Microsoft's servers.
Ahhh! Yeah, my downloads last night were downloading at a quarter of the rate they usually do.
The Xbox App is an Xbox.
Let's just say I buy the Xbox games I want on Steam.
A year or so ago the Xbox App was dreadful and I had many issues with it, these days it's improved but still way worse than Steam. Download speeds seem to be pretty variable, sometimes it'll use my full bandwith but other times it's slow
Er what? This has been an issue for over a year, probably longer if you look at Reddit threads. Steam and Epic games download at my Internet speed of up to 700mbps. The Xbox app? 5-10mbps sometimes. I was full of regret when I accidently deleted MSFS then had to wait the better part of a day for it to download again. The app is otherwise decent. It's really quite appalling for a major tech company.
@carlos82 Yup, I only use the Xbox app for crossbuy on PC and Series X or Gamepass titles. Everything else I get through Steam and begrudgingly, Epic when they have a good exclusive like Alan Wake 2.
this has been a huge problem for a long time just do a search for it you will find tons of posts and Microsoft has done nothing. try downloading star field or ark ascended it'll take a day at 30 Mbps it's un believable they refuse to acknowledge it.
I just did a search and found posts back in 2020 about this very issue.
I have a wired full fibre connection and consistently get a bare minimum of 900mbps down on Steam. When I had Game Pass and was downloading some games from the PC Xbox app, I'd never get that.
