Earlier in the month, we mentioned that Xbox had been nominated for Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards 2024 (Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 being that game), and the awards were revealed last night at an event in London.
As you can tell from the headline though, it ended up being a quiet night for Xbox. Only one Xbox game technically won an award at the event, which was Minecraft for the "Still Playing (Console & PC)" award. That said, Fallout did also take home the "Best Game Adaptation" award following its well-received Amazon Prime show earlier this year.
In terms of the Game of the Year award, it was actually Black Myth: Wukong that came out the victor - and it's obviously not available on Xbox at the time of writing. That said, we're hoping it could still be with us before the end of 2024.
We'll throw the full list of winners down below (thanks to GamesRadar for the list), along with some images:

That's not a problem. These awards are completely subjective.
For those who really play, 2024 was a really good year for Xbox (and for Playstation and Nintendo too)
@Foxx_64740 Apparently these awards are with popular vote, not critics. Unless you're saying nobody plays except you.
I said the awards are subjective, what's good for someone may be different for someone else. That's why a quiet night for Xbox doesn't necessarily mean it was a bad year.
And I no, I'm not saying anything you implied.
How can Xbox win when it hardly has any 1st party titles to win with anymore.
I keep telling myself that Xbox won’t go full on 3rd party but as each day gets more bad news about Xbox, it just seems that it is starting to become in inevitable and once that happens , 3rd parties won’t have an Xbox to make games for and that will be that.
Can anyone give me some glimmers of hope?
@Foxx_64740 "For those who really play" implies that the people who vote on these awards don't play.
Congratulations BMW. Though it's hardly surprising. It was the most popular game this year in terms of sales and it wins the popularity award. But Golden Joysticks is not a level playing field. Being a fan vote the most played games of the year have a distinct advantage over other games. The table leans firmly one way.
Each voting system has flaws but this one has the most to me. It is heavily biased in favour of the biggest games, as described above. But it's also subject to brigading (organised voting) as Pewdiepie proved several years ago when he corralled his minions to win a meme game an award. Lastly being an online vote it's susceptible to bot votes. All that makes it less worthy to ME than others. ymmv
That said I am glad these awards and others all exist, each have different voting criteria and different flaws/biases. There is never one truth to GOTY and it's nice to see different games win awards.
@MeanBeanEgg So for you 2024 was a bad year for gaming?
Haven't played either astro or rebirth (as no ps5) but from what I've seen at my mates house they're both really deserving winners. Xbox might have more candidates next year, some amazing stuff coming out.
Also not played BM:W but that one strikes me as really odd. Is it really that good a game or is it just absolutely massive in China? It doesn't look particularly unique or inivitive, certainly not my cup of tea at any rate
Are the english voice actors that much better than the japanese for them to both be winning those awards for rebirth?
@MeanBeanEgg What are you talking about? That's not what was said. Voting is subjective, everyone who play games, not just check scores, will eventually find themselves loving games that most people dislike or disliking games that most people love;
I have zero interest in GTA 6, and yet it was voted the most anticipated game; it doesn't affect me at all.
For folks who are into souls games & also don't mind a bit of indie quirkiness Another Crabs Treasure is well worth your time.
Also don't let souls game put you off this has to be the most approachable one on the market with enough options that everyone should find a suitable level of difficulty.
For what its worth it is the only indie game i played to completion this year. Normally I bounce off indie games fairly quickly but this one was a lot of fun.
@MjJmediablogger
I have tried to give hope to Xbox this year but have given up myself now.
Just look at the below PS5 Black Friday deals compared to Xbox.
UK here so just shopped up and seen PS5 black Friday deals, starts right now.
PS5 disc £400
PS5 digital £310
Series x disc £460
Series x digital £430, sorry that price is a joke.
Series s 512gb £200
Microsoft you got no chance against those Sony prices. Maybe a few Series s sales.
But as for the big power consoles you really don’t want to sell consoles, DO YOU.
It is dam obvious at these prices for Black Friday against the competition
Ps5 pro lost best new hardware to the slightly upgraded steam deck. Xbox needs that handheld.
@BacklogBrad I own both and would give it to the Steam Deck OLED, it's a marvel. We've yet to see the best of PS5 Pro, it's just released and almost no games were built with it in mind, but I think it will show it's worth over the next 3-4 years.
Xbox is just throwing in the towel on hardware. I have often argued that the cloud and streaming on all devices options are good but if it’s at the cost of a console , who is going to make games for Xbox? And if they don’t make them, they might now allow them to be streamed and the whole thing unravels very quickly.
I am not jumping ship yet by any means but if things continue it looks as bad as they do for Xbox , I will have little choice.
@BacklogBrad Xbox will only succeed with a handheld if it is native and comes out on next 12 months. Any longer and it will be far too late. Far too late. We have already seen with Flight Sim 24 that cloud is going to break easily and people won’t put up with that. They just won’t.
I haven’t jumped ship completely but picked up a PS5 pro on release date as nothing is sacred just for Xbox anymore and the lack of pricing and no advertising other than Gamepass they don’t seem bothered in selling consoles.
@MjJmediablogger I agree it should be native but flight sim has been a great experience after the first day server issues. I am loving flight sim.
@BacklogBrad I am now it’s working although I have a feeling it will make the move to PS5 very soon.
@MjJmediablogger what does it matter if it does make the move to ps5? Won't make a difference to me as I continue to play it on series x and pc through gamepass.
@BacklogBrad because eventually Xbox won’t be a box and all games will be on other platforms. Phil keeps saying they will make more consoles but that needs to come from Nadella who is in full control now and he clearly wants a 3rd party publishing future, not an Xbox future. Spencer and Bond are not even close to being in charge any more.
@MjJmediablogger Nadella is not the driving force for any xbox related decisions besides approving acquisitions. He has way more important decisions to make than where videogames are sold.
Phil and his team are behind the multiplatform push and it will have a positive effect on xbox.
@BacklogBrad I really doubt that. Nadella is in charge. Spencer just pops up to say what he is told to say. Nadella wants Microsoft Gaming not Xbox. I have argued for a long time that is not the case but it seems to be becoming even more obvious who is pulling all the strings. Spencer is a dead duck. Nothing more than a puppet.
@MjJmediablogger I highly doubt the CEO of Microsoft has the slightest care about where xbox puts its little videogames. They are a drop in the bucket for the company. He is out making contracts with militaries not dictating where Avowed or flight sim are releasing.
Four times a year he looks at a number on a spreadsheet for xbox and if the number is black instead of red, he is happy.
Phil Spencer convincing Microsoft to invest nearly $100 billion into xbox instead of shutting it down is not puppet behavior.
