A month ago today, we caught wind of Worms Armageddon finally coming Xbox via a new Anniversary Edition release - and the time has now come for this classic strategy game to make its Xbox debut.
Yep, Worms Armageddon: Anniversary Edition is out now for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and so far, we're not seeing many impressions of the new version. However, a few early reviews are out there — including from our sister sites Nintendo Life and Push Square — so we thought we'd gather those early impressions to give you a decent idea of how this new release is shaping up.
Without further ado, here are some quick review summaries of Worms Armageddon: Anniversary Edition:
Nintendo Life (9/10)
"Worms Armageddon: Anniversary Edition is another slam dunk for Digital Eclipse and its ongoing mission of game preservation and historical documentation. The team hasn't gone mad with any new additions or tweaks to the core experience, but when the original game remains such a bonafide classic more than 20 years after its release, it really doesn't need much tinkering with. The added bonus of the Game Boy Color version alongside a wealth of interesting interviews and archive footage make this release a perfect entry point for newcomers as well as a warm, nostalgic cuddle for veterans."
Bonus Stage (8/10)
"Worms Anniversary Edition provides more than enough content to keep any Worms fan happy. Purists will arguably prefer the more traditional Battlegrounds gameplay while W.M.D delivers plenty of new content and gameplay mechanics while managing to keep the essence of the Worms experience intact. The DLC included provides plenty of additional content for both games with the inclusion of the All-Stars content proving especially enjoyable."
Push Square (7/10)
"This remains a highly entertaining strategy game with lots of ways to play. Its big strengths are its friendship-making/destroying multiplayer and thorough customisation options, letting you make your own rulesets, teams, and procedurally generated maps. However you choose to engage with it, the game's short turns, cartoonish physics, and wide array of weapons all contribute to a good time, whether it's in small bursts or long multiplayer sessions.
When you're in the thick of a match, using a baseball bat to smack a worm into the water, blowing up a cluster of enemies with a well-placed sheep, or expertly crossing the map with a ninja rope, only to botch the landing and start a chain reaction of mines and exploding barrels, all the rough edges erode away. Worms Armageddon: Anniversary Edition is a warts-and-all revival of a game that, 25 years later, still has it where it counts, and there aren't too many titles that can make that claim."
So, there you have it - Worms Armageddon seems to have stood the test of time, with all three of these reviews being largely positive overall. The game's couple of user reviews on the Xbox Store right now are also very positive - and the title can be picked up over there for $24.99 / £24.99 if you're so inclined.
