Supermassive's next big horror game is out for Xbox players today, which means critics have been going hands on with the title in recent days - including us here at Pure Xbox!
We'll drop a quick summary of our full review down below, then, alongside a look at what other outlets are making of The Casting of Frank Stone as it launches across Xbox, PC and PS5.
Pure Xbox (7/10)
"If you've played pretty much any Supermassive game in the past — from Until Dawn to The Quarry — you'll know what to expect from The Casting of Frank Stone. This Dead by Daylight tie-in doesn't quite match the lofty heights of those two games in particular, but it gets pretty close, delivering an engaging popcorn horror experience along the way. We'd have been well up for a few more hours in this universe, which certainly says something, but ultimately results in The Casting of Frank Stone sitting just below greatness."
MP1st (9/10)
"As much as it seems weird that a studio would release a single-player game based on their multiplayer IP, The Casting of Frank Stone makes that premise work. Will it draw player interest enough that they’ll want to play Dead by Daylight after playing this? Probably not, but taken on its own, The Casting of Frank Stone is a solid horror game, and could very well be Supermassive’s finest work to date."
Wccftech (8/10)
"The Casting of Frank Stone is yet another hit from Supermassive Games, delivering an engaging horror story deeply rooted into the lore of Dead of Daylight equally enjoyable by fans of the original game and those with no knowledge of the multiplayer game created by Behaviour Interactive. While its short length and limited gameplay may slightly hinder the experience, the game remains a worthwhile purchase for those who appreciate well-crafted supernatural horror stories."
God is a Geek (8/10)
"The Casting of Frank Stone isn’t without its issues, but I still thoroughly enjoyed playing. The story ties in excellently with Behaviour Interactive’s multiplayer game, breathing new life into the series while feeling new and exciting at the same time. The cosmic horror, the blood and gore, the suspense and terror, the building of tension; everything is done with the familiar expertise Supermassive is known for, and I can’t wait to see what fans of the lore of Dead by Daylight think. While the visuals aren’t as crisp as they could be and some of the gameplay is a little unresponsive, I still had a blast finding out who the hell Frank Stone is."
VG247 (8/10)
"Those who have always wanted to know more about how Dead by Daylight’s cast of characters came to be trapped in a never-ending nightmare by The Entity will be wholly pleased to finally have some answers, especially if the DBD-stylised achievements and endless Easter eggs didn’t already have you foaming at the mouth. If you’re a fan of Dead by Daylight or The Dark Pictures Anthology, The Casting of Frank Stone is an absolutely must-play for you. Even then, those unfamiliar with the series’ will still find something to appreciate during this entertaining, albeit fleeting, experience."
Eurogamer (3/5)
"Ultimately, The Casting of Frank Stone is most successful in these kinds of subtleties, the ones that reflect the trapped rhythm of its connecting timelines and Dead by Daylight's Survivors, who are hunted for eternity. Frank Stone's music repeats, its cast members reappear throughout history, and life, according to this game, is a wheel you're bound to. It might not always be pleasant, but the important thing is that it's yours."
Digital Trends (3/5)
"For those who simply want to know more about the world of Dead by Daylight, The Casting of Frank Stone serves as a concise and well-constructed lore rabbit hole. Its best moments, though, are the ones that gesture at something greater. There’s a compelling meta-commentary on horror media here, one that touches on how film imprisons our greatest fears and unlocks the cage as soon as an unsuspecting viewer thinks they’re safe enough to watch."
Push Square (5/10)
"We generally love the marriage between story and gameplay that Supermassive Games creates, but without the many advancements of The Dark Pictures Anthology, The Casting of Frank Stone feels far too simple. With an uninteresting narrative to boot, the first effort to expand the Dead by Daylight universe is a misfire."
We have quite a range of review scores here, but generally, folks seem pretty positive about The Casting of Frank Stone as a DBD-flavoured single-player adventure. We certainly had a good with it here at Pure Xbox - our full review is available down below.
