We're just a couple of months away from the release of Sonic X Shadow Generations, and guess what that means? Yep, SEGA is removing the ability to buy the original Xbox 360 version of Sonic Generations from the Xbox Store.
Actually, that's not entirely true. In a statement today, SEGA advised that the 360 version will still be available in certain "bundles" going forward, and as you'd expect it'll still be re-downloadable for anyone who owns it already.
Here's the statement:
"We're excited to share SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS with you this October and see a new generation cherish this game as much as we do! On 9/9, the original Sonic Generations will be removed as a standalone title. But, we've heard your feedback, and want to help preserve the game."
"Therefore, Sonic Generations will still be available via bundles of other iconic Sonic titles on Steam and Xbox. Existing owners of the title will still be able to download and play, as well. Lastly, we are happy to confirm that mods on the Steam version will NOT be affected!"
Despite the "9/9" mention, Sonic Generations is not currently purchasable via the Xbox Store, so your only chance to buy it now is either as part of these apparent "bundles" or via the disc version if you have a console that supports it.
Of course, what SEGA really wants you to do is buy Sonic X Shadow Generations this October, which features a complete remaster of the Xbox 360 version along with a whole bunch of new content. We'll leave that up to you!

It got delisted from the XB1/Series X|S store around the same time it got delisted from the 360 store.
Don’t remember any bundles on the Xbox store. Luckily I have it digitally!
This traditionally means they have 0 confidence in the remake and are bracing hard.
Another example of a game that is perfectly playable on modern platforms being delisted to make way for a remaster nobody asked for.
Neat!!! 👍
Doesn't bother me I have a physical copy
Already bought a digital copy when they announced the remaster/remake.
Got this on gold many moons ago🧎
The same thing Rockstar did with GTA by releasing GTA Trilogy, or the same thing Ubisoft did with Beyond Good & Evil by releasing Beyond Good & Evil 20 Anniversay.
It's not something I like, but as long as those who bought the original still have it available for download I'm not going to complain.
@Markatron84 People were definitely asking for the remaster. Specifically, shareholders.
The remaster doesn't exist because the game needs to be remastered. The remasters exist because it turns catalogue games into new releases by way of magic.
This is officially the first game I have bought to become delisted. Also I hope so bad that the new shadow stuff is not just the 3 levels they showed in the comparison video, but I can feel it in my gut that this is the case.
Honestly, surprised it took them this long. I think they immediately sniped the original Genesis games off Steam/Xbox when they announced Origins. They were downright sloth-like here.
No skin off my nose, and haven't most who wanted the original already bought it. Considering it has been available on the storefront for ages and at crazy reduced prices.
Anyway I have the original physically on PS3 and digitally on 360
This is what frustrates be about digital games. I don't personally care about preserving games forever but I do find it frustrating that the digital games can be pulled at any time by the publishers. When a developer or publisher creates a new remastered version the older version almost always get removed from the digital store. And sometimes it is removed from one console but is available on another console when it basically the same version. Or even DLC that is available but a few years later it's removed and unless you bought it when it was available you can no longer purchase it, ever.
@Rodimusprime13 I just wish they would keep the original games up and charge 10-15 more that way its at least there.
