Phantom Blade Zero has been getting plenty of attention since its initial reveal - a reveal that skipped Xbox entirely, with the game slicing and dicing towards a PS5 and PC-only launch. Back in 2023, we heard that the team had no exclusivity agreements in place, but a new developer comment has caused some controversy around the title and its launch platforms.
Basically, one of the game's developers reportedly made a frank comment during the ChinaJoy convention last month - supposedly going ahead and saying "nobody needs this platform" while referring to Xbox. Then, the studio released an official statement in response, claiming "an unnamed developer" made these comments without their backing.
Here's the official response from developer S-GAME:
"Recently, we noticed that some media outlets have claimed to have interviewed an unnamed developer from S-GAME at Chinajoy, who seems to have made some statements regarding the release platforms and strategy for Phantom Blade Zero.
We want to clarify that these claimed statements do not represent S-GAME’s values or culture, as we believe in making our game accessible to everyone and have not ruled out any platforms for Phantom Blade Zero. We are hard at work on both the development and publishing fronts to ensure that as many players as possible can enjoy our game at release and in the future.
Our team is looking forward to sharing more development updates soon, and we are excited to bring our world premiere demo to Gamescom this month!"
However, the story doesn't stop there. While that comment seemingly prompted this studio response, it's since been said that "there is no demand" is actually what was said by the sole developer - rather than the initial reported quote. S-GAME hasn't made further comment since this information has come to light, leading to a bit of a messy situation for the team and this initial reported interview.
As we previously mentioned, we heard straight from the team last May that there's no specific exclusivity deal involved with Phantom Blade Zero, so the game could feasibly come to Xbox sometime down the line. For now, an Xbox version hasn't been announced of course, but the above statement does leave things open for the future.
If we hear anything official about Phantom Blade Zero for Xbox we'll let you know, and for the time being, the game is coming to PS5 and PC sometime soon.
