We still can't quite believe we're living in a world where Final Fantasy XIV Online is available on Xbox, but we are! Better yet, it's just introduced a brand-new expansion, alongside a hefty update for the main game on Series X and S.
Let's start with the expansion first, because that's where things perhaps aren't quite so positive. FFXIV: Dawntrail currently has a "Mixed" rating on Steam based on just over 1000 ratings, with some praising it as being a great new addition to the game, and others feeling disappointed with the story and the writing in particular.
Here are a couple of contrasting reviews:
Zexyen on Steam: Having just come off the final Dungeon & Trial for Dawntrail, I've come off of this feeling satisfied. Yes the Quest Design still has the typical FFXIV nonsense of - go here, talk to some, deliver that; But the lower stakes & new world gives you a lot to explore and enjoy. The new Content In terms of Dungeons & Trials were fantastic all around, and I can't wait to try out the newer stuff with the mechanics introduced here."
Blue on Steam: "It's a very unusual experience for me to come away from an FFXIV expansion launch impressed by everything except the one thing I expected to be impressed by. If you don't care about the story, then I can wholeheartedly recommend this expansion. However, if the story is the primary draw for you, then you can probably sit this one out."
Regardless of whether you opt to purchase Dawntrail or not, you'll be glad to know that Final Fantasy XIV has received a massive update on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, which amongst other things, adds 120FPS support.
Yes, this is now the "maximum frame rate" for the game on these systems, although Square Enix warns that it probably won't be a consistent 120FPS - so those with VRR-enabled displays will likely benefit the most. The game has also received a graphical update as part of Patch 7.0, improving all kinds of visuals from character models to shadows, so FFXIV now looks better than ever across the two Xbox consoles.
If you're interested, you can check out the full patch notes on the Square Enix website, and don't forget that Final Fantasy XIV has a totally free trial on the Xbox Store - so if you haven't played it yet, you can download it right now!

They still haven’t fixed the overzealous chat filtering, so that automatically means my PS5 is the only way I’ll play.
Once they fix that, I might mess around with the XBox version. Till then, I feel sorry for gamers who play with friends and don’t want words like “knight” and “raids” censored.
That said, I’m enjoying the expansion. Pictomancer and Viper are fun to play, and I like the (so far, anyway) lower stakes goals. It’s hard to top Endwalker and comparing it to Dawntrail is a tiny bit unfair since EW was the end of a gigantic storyline and DT is the start of a new one.
I’m at the start of Stormblood so i’m years away from playing this. Interested in checking out the new updates on the Xbox version. Just gotta re-sub.
I'm still a loooong way from DT content, but considering the small stories are the most fun part of ARR to me, I think I'm going to like the low key frivolous story after the heavy story chapters later in the game. It'll be like a return to roots.
@dskatter "I feel sorry for gamers who play with friends and don’t want words like “knight” and “raids” censored."
LOL, that's a thing? I don't play with a keyboard (even when I'm on "PC" (Legion)), so I'm the awkward silent protag in play with randos. I feel bad, some are genuinely helpful.
@K1LLEGAL LOL, I'm still in ARR (the Lv50 post-ARR ARR area.) Just too much to do and time to spend to get too far in MSQ!
@NEStalgia I finally pushed through Heavensward when the Xbox version hit. But yea I find it hard to make too much progress at once. I love the game but MQ after MQ is a bit much.
@NEStalgia The XBox built in censorship is ludicrously stupid. Because “raids” contains “aids” it censors it. So much silliness.
Raids are PART OF THE GAME.XD
@dskatter LOL that's insane! Can Xbox even censor in-game chat like that? I wouldn't have thought Xbox can even see that, I would have thought that was purely on the worldserver.
What on earth is it rejecting about "knight" then?
And also...I mean....Xbox owns CoD.....how the heck is VC going to work with that level of censorship given how the CoD crowd is lol!
@NEStalgia I don’t know, all I can tell you is what I experienced running the client on my series X and what Xbox players in my FC are experiencing. This is text only, of course.
Xbox is the worst platform for FF14 currently. I wanted to recommend it to a friend I work with, but his only console is a series X and I knew it would INFURIATE him to experience.
