We're getting closer and closer to the end of the Xbox 360 store, with the old marketplace shutting its doors as of July 29th, 2024, and Microsoft has been sending out reminders over the past few hours to all Xbox users about the change.
We pretty much knew everything we needed to be aware of before today, but just in case you were in any doubt, there are some extra details here worth noting. Specifically, it's mentioned that everything from free trials to add-ons to avatar items and even downloadable trailers will be unavailable to acquire after July 29th, so if there's perhaps a demo or a gamerpic you haven't downloaded yet on the 360, you need to grab it as soon as possible.
"As shared in August 2023, starting 29 July 2024, the Microsoft Store on Xbox 360 and on marketplace.xbox.com will no longer be supporting purchases. This includes games, trials, add-ons, avatar items, apps, gamerpics, game trailers and videos. It also includes purchases like gamertag changes on Xbox 360, Game Pass Core subscriptions, in-game purchases and Microsoft Films & TV. Games and content purchased before that date will still play as intended and content redownloads will continue to be supported for owned content."
Another thing to keep in mind is that if you have any redeemable codes for Xbox 360 that haven't been used yet, you will again have to use those before July 29th before they become invalid. That said, Microsoft mentions that "gift cards and subscription cards will not be impacted" - so seemingly those will continue to work even after the closure.
It's also reiterated that backwards compatible Xbox 360 games will still be purchasable after the closure via the newer Xbox website and Xbox One / Series X / Series S consoles, and it looks like they'll be accessible on Xbox 360 as well.
"These titles can still be purchased at xbox.com after 29 July 2024, and are playable on Xbox 360 consoles, too."
So, that's what's going to happen to the Xbox 360 store when it officially shuts down on July 29th, 2024, and all we can say in the meantime is that if there's anything you want to acquire before then, make sure you redeem it ASAP!
