Beating any of the Gears games on Insane difficulty is no small feat, but what if you were mad enough to try and do it without ever taking cover? Well, Twitch streamer Arrrash has decided to replay the first game — specifically 2015's Gears of War: Ultimate Edition — in 2024, without using the game's cover mechanic.
Taking cover is borderline essential in Gears of War - the game's level design, structure, and large parts of its combat mechanics are built around the feature. Still, you can of course just never use the cover button and play it like a more standard third-person shooter - one with its own set of unique challenges.
Challenges that can be overcome though, clearly. Here's a clip of Arrrash taking down the game's final boss — RAAM — on insane, having never taken cover throughout a roughly-14-hour playthrough:
We've thrown a more extensive look at this feat right at the top of the article, so you can get a little more context behind the streamer's recent challenge. It's safe to say we won't be attempting this one - just getting through the game on insane as normal is hard enough!
