Beating any of the Gears games on Insane difficulty is no small feat, but what if you were mad enough to try and do it without ever taking cover? Well, Twitch streamer Arrrash has decided to replay the first game — specifically 2015's Gears of War: Ultimate Edition — in 2024, without using the game's cover mechanic.
Taking cover is borderline essential in Gears of War - the game's level design, structure, and large parts of its combat mechanics are built around the feature. Still, you can of course just never use the cover button and play it like a more standard third-person shooter - one with its own set of unique challenges.
Challenges that can be overcome though, clearly. Here's a clip of Arrrash taking down the game's final boss — RAAM — on insane, having never taken cover throughout a roughly-14-hour playthrough:
We've thrown a more extensive look at this feat right at the top of the article, so you can get a little more context behind the streamer's recent challenge. It's safe to say we won't be attempting this one - just getting through the game on insane as normal is hard enough!
Do you think you could do this? Tell us if you'd give it a go down in the comments section.

I'm not watching the video but if anyone does let me know if this is bull or not raam on insane had me stuck for ages
Wow, i beat insane on all of them but without cover just seems impossible. Gears 5 multiplayer i was at one peak ranked in the top 5%, then i took a break and lost most of those skills. I am still hoping we get the Marcus Fenix Collection at the June Showcase with a Gears 6 trailer.
@Ricky-Spanish He doesn't take cover but he still stands behind pillars and walls as if he was taking cover. Still impressive. The Raam fight took him over 100 tries.
I love me some Gears of War, @HonestHick. Indeed, I beat Gears Tactics on Insane just a week or so ago. I have beaten every game solo on Insane, and also solo on Inconceivable where available. I have also beaten them all in co-op on the same difficulties.
When it comes to Horde, I am currently number 120 in the World as an Engineer, and still comfortably in the top 1% as a consequence despite not having played Gears 5 for a few months now.
I used to play Gears of War 3 with a few friends (who now have children and don't game much anymore) and at one point we had the 42nd highest score for a run of Horde. Playing Horde on Insane (particularly in GoW3) is probably my most fun times whilst gaming...
@GhanaViking Thanks buddy not surprised it took so long even using cover it's just not fair on insane and when raam does die it's out of the blue ha
@Fiendish-Beaver thats awesome. Yeah you and i are the local Gear Heads around here. Gears of War is just Xbox to me. Like Mario is to Nintendo. Me and my friends back in the 360 days did weekend Gears and Beers. We would drink beer and just grind hours and hours into Gears on 360. I think that plays a part of why i want the Marcus Fenix 1-3 trilogy so bad. It was just a special time in my gaming life where games were fun and online was new and exciting and fun over took coming online and talking business strategies for the console makers. There was nothing and i mean nothing in gaming at the time like chainsawing a locust. That was as satisfying move in gaming as it got. Gears of War, Red Dead and Diablo is the reason i still play video games today. They just moved me in ways other games didn’t.
@Fiendish-Beaver 100% with you on this gears 3 was amazing I had two sets on friends on this game 1 set for multiplayer we started a clan took it very seriously scriming and another set of easy going funny guys most I knew in real life for horde loved the late nights all determined to beat 50 levels on insane and the joy when you did so you could finally go asleep haha
@Fiendish-Beaver they definitely need a rts gears with 3 factions
Seriously x1000
I have a friend with whom I still play Horde in Gears 5 on a regular basis, @HonestHick. It's just the two of us, and we have beaten every one of the 37 maps on Insane. We've also managed a few on Inconceivable, but Master is just a bit beyond our capabilities as a duo. Neither of us are into the multiplayer at all, just Horde, and we only ever game with people we know, but these days it is just the two of us. Our other friends now have children, and they are Gears blockers! 🤣
Right now my mate is off work having had surgery on his back, and so we have been going through all the Halo games. He had never played any of them before his operation, and now we have beaten them all on Normal (so that he could get to grips with the story), and we have now beaten all but Halo 2 and Infinite on Legendary as a duo too (I had already beaten the lot of them solo on Legendary, but it's been fun doing it as a duo for the first time). We start on Infinite on Legendary tomorrow, which I am looking forward to, but I have lost count on the number of times he has said to me that Halo isn't a patch on Gears of War... 😂
I think that would be pretty awesome, @TheSimulator. Not sure what the third faction would be, unless the Stranded were to become a force to be reckoned with, or the Lambent were considered separately from the Locust. It would be good to see them introduce a new type of enemy though, and an RTS would certainly be something that I would be interested in...
Your memories of Gears 3 sounds pretty much the same as mine, @Ricky-Spanish. They were certainly fun times. I met three of my best mates through Gears of War. I met them online playing horde in Gears 2, then they each visited me in person, and then I went to them (we live 200 miles away from each other, so it's not something we do that often!). I actually became Godfather to one of their children, and it all started with Gears of War... 😊
@Fiendish-Beaver thats awesome. Co-op gaming on 360 was so far ahead of the competition. Done right all the way around. I really hope the rumor of a new Halo game using Unreal engine 5 due out in 2025 is true. Plus i hope we get a great gears game and you and i will be all set for a while.
@Fiendish-Beaver The community on gears back then was just great hasn't been the same since the 360 days back then I couldn't turn on my Xbox without loads of game and party invites for gears hopefully we get a new gears announced like they are saying soon maybe get a horde and versus team going on this site
@HonestHick
Why would you want remasters when these games are backwards compatible and available on Xbox One and Series X?
I know I'd like a remaster of the first 3, @stefan771. If you now play the remaster of the first game, and then play the following two (which I did recently) you can see that the graphics are not up to the same standard, and little things like not being able to tag enemies so that your mate can see them too are missing. Indeed, if you play the first game, and then the remaster, the difference is pretty stark to be honest. Yes, the games are great, but they can be made greater.
Also, it's always nice to earn those achievements again! 😂
@stefan771 cause i like remasters of great games that are on older hardware. It will bring them to the PC and get new gamers into the franchise.
@HonestHick I love your passion for Gears... I too had played nothing like it back in the 360 days, the vibe of the game was amazing at the time. I still enjoy to this day.
Do you remember the Mad World advert for Gears?
@RetroMan71 thanks buddy. Yeah it’s my go to shooter and it’s not even close. Would love to see 1-3 cranked all the way up. Players would enjoy it I believe. Oh yeah i remember the Mad World Ad. It was really well done. Would love to see MS advertise aggressively for its games like that again.
