It's not rocket science to suggest that Xbox is a digital-focused game seller these days - after all, Xbox Game Pass is a massive part of the company's overall strategy. However, even though the Xbox Series X still supports discs of course, it looks like one of the team's biggest releases isn't doing so well in physical form - at least at one major store in the US.
An internal memo has been shared online, relating to US retail giant Walmart and its handling of Xbox exclusive Starfield. According to the memo, which has since been corroborated by Wario64 on Twitter, Walmart is going to start removing the game from sale in physical form - with the process apparently starting this week.
The memo also states that employees will be able to sell remaining copies of Starfield for 3 cents if folks try to buy the game before its "disposal at store level" - hinting that leftover copies could then be destroyed.
For a title that only launched a few months ago this all sounds a bit extreme, so we're definitely not fully buying into the idea that this is real just yet. However, Wario64 has a huge following and plenty of affiliate deals with US retailers, so if this memo is real it makes sense that he of all people has seen it.
We'll keep our eyes on this one to see how it all develops, but it's worth being quite cautious with this info at the moment until we start seeing on-the-ground reports of this actually happening. If it does happen, and that's a big if, it'd suggest that Starfield hasn't performed as well as both Walmart and Bethesda had hoped in this case.
