Want to enhance your Xbox Game Pass experience? Come join the official Pure Xbox Game Club!
We can't take any credit on staff for this — the PX Game Club is the work of ralphdibny, Balta666 and the rest of the contributors over at the Pure Xbox forums, who have established a community that meets up every month to play a game on Xbox Game Pass and share their experiences. Games are voted on every month by the contributors involved.
The game for January 2024 is Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, which was just added to Game Pass back in November. It's available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Cloud and PC.
You'll find the forum thread to get involved below (it has over 3,100 entries to date!):
If you're interested in what kind of discussion goes on, here's what a couple of contributors had to say about last month's Pure Xbox Game Club title, Dead Space:
- NintendoByNature on Pure Xbox:
"Well I finished it last night. Loved my experience with the game. There were some frustrating sections, typically when there was toxins in the air, and you literally couldn't see enemies. It didn't strike fear in me, it was mostly just annoying because of the wall necromorphs that were insta-kills. I can't say I enjoyed it as much as Alan Wake 2, but its definitely up there."
- R1spam on Pure Xbox:
"The choice to have everything be in the world with no cut scenes and all of your UI being in the world is so immersive. I'm surprised more games haven't followed this design choice (or maybe some have and I've missed them and should check them out)!"

I have recently started this myself and it's actually my first Yakuza game. Why have I never delved into this series until now? I'm having an absolute blast with this game! I'm excited to get it done so that I can try another one after 😂
@fox_mattcloud This game bridges Yakuza: Like A Dragon and Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, which comes out on the 26th. You should check out Yakuza: Like A Dragon. That was my first and I'm playing through Gaiden now (Ch.4). I prefer the turn-based over the action personally.
Never played the Yakuza series. Though I've never really liked the jrpg art styles, anime, or whatever the name is now.
Just joined the Game Club so willing to give it a serious go and share my thoughts as a 'Yak virgin' 😆.
@jedinite Are you thinking of the Persona series? I wouldn't call the Yakuza series style anime at all.
Oh boy, I would've written something a little nicer had I known🫠
@FarmDog08 yeah I probably am. Tbh they all look the same to me. I'm sure they play very different but idk, Yakuza/Persona w/e seem very samey in art style. I honestly wouldn't be able to differentiate between the two.
Same reason I don't like FF either. Idk those franchises never clicked with me. Cept maybe FF3 (or FF2 cant rrcall) way back in the day. But I'm willing to give this Yakuza Gaiden a proper go though. Maybe I'll be a convert 😀.
@jedinite granted I only played P5 I don't think the two series share a similar look.
Beyond being japanese sega games they don't really share much of a resemblance.
Persona games are anime style and yakuza looks kinda realistic.
Hell people used to call the yakuza games gta clones, don't think I've ever even seen anyone call em a jrpg at least before some of them turned into turn based games a few years back.
Also if you wanna give the yakuza games a chance I'm of the opinion that yakuza 0 is a better starting point. (Like many others actually).
Like someone else on here mentioned this gaiden is a spinoff to bridge the gap between games. It also references lots of events from the older yakuza games.
@Cherip-the-Ripper yeah i just used the term jrpg as a catch-all. Lol idk if saying I don't like Japanese games will get me trolled for being 'racist' . You know how some peeps are very sensitive nowadays.
As for Yakuza didn't know it was more realistic. As I say I just skip past them on GP or in reviews. I may take your advice though and start with 0. What's an average time for a playthrough of Yakuza 0 u reckon?
@jedinite yakuza 0 was my first yakuza game, and one of the first few games I played for context.
I played it for 55 hours. Prolly was more like 50, but spent some hours doing random stuff from the trophy list.
There was this one cheev for instance that had you walking around the town until someone would light a cigarette for you.
Very trivial thing but as the majority of gamers just run around it's a very neat thing to just experience. Makes it all feel more alive.
The average playtime would depend on your playing habits I suppose, if you like playing story heavy games, lots of cutscenes in a relatively small sandbox then you'll probably spend a similar time on it, or even more.
On the other side of the coin you might dislike the amount of cutscenes in it, especially towards the beginning when they try to setup the story. The game isn't very interactive just yet at those stages and it's one of the main complaints I've seen very often.
In that case, if you were to somewhat 'rush' it I still think you'll play it for about 20 hours give or take.
And yh you're right lots of modern day sensibilities, just say your say tbh
Sorry for the rambling, been a while since I played it, brings forth some very fond memories.
If you manage to get around to playing it I hope you love it as much as many others do, used to be one of my favorite ps exclusives before it got ported over, I'm glad it's more readily available now.
Edit: seems I misremembered, according to truetrophies I've played yakuza 0 for 65 hours.
@Cherip-the-Ripper thnx for the response. Yeah I do like games with a story and cutscenes are ok if they add to the whole vibe. Used to enjoy GTA V but done it too many times on too many platforms lol. Used to do GTAO a hella lot but again pretty much maxed out everything there.
Loved AW2 and Starfield (somewhat) and stuff like Tomb Raiders, Horizon ZD, SM1 on PS4. Also do like pick-up-n-play games like Forza etc and love soulslike. All hail Elden Ring 😆 and Lies of P.
But I'm also a retro gamer so I kinda play a wide variety. Replaying a few on Evercade atm. The Team 17 cart is good ... ahhh Alien Breed my old friend . Also stuff like Sega Collection on Switch (Final Fight, Golden Axe etc). Never seemed to gel with Zelda either but prolly due to playing the OG many years ago when it launched. Ik TOTK is totally different to the 1st Zelda I just think the 1st game soured me on the characters. Couldn't care less if he saves her or kills her tbh lol.
Back on topic, yeah 50+hrs is OK, don't see the point in rushing through a game really (cept ofc the OG Doom 😀).
Should finish my playthrough of Robocop this week so looks like I'll be booting up Yakuza 0 after that. Thanks again for the info and apologies for the long post.
@jedinite nah no worries, I love reading up on people's experiences with older games because it's stuff I missed out on during my childhood.
I don't even know any of those retro games 😭
But as far as newer games go yh I can't wait to get around to AW2 as well, loved the hell out of Lies of P, probably my goty this year, really loved Remnant 2 as well.
And Robocop looks pretty amazing, glad the dev is going from strength to strength.
Their terminator game looked a bit off haha, here's to hoping they do a Judge Dredd game after this, I need more of those 80s movies inspired games 😮💨
@Cherip-the-Ripper yeah Remnant 2 was good enjoyed that. Can't wait for you to experience AW2 😀. I reckon it might top your GOTY. Would recommend setting aside a nice chunk of playtime and take your time. Great game. Yeah Robocop is pretty awesome. Granted its not a very cerebral game, but the story is really good and hearing a baddie shout ' ...dude you took my fk arm!' never gets old lol. It does have limb targeting which is cool and the sound design is great.
Glad they're doing better as a dev team, I agree Terminator was a weak showing. And man yeah, a new JD game would be awesome.
Would also recommend looking into the Evercade VS. A great little system that uses carts 😀. Tons of games and publishers on there and more carts released everyday. I'm sure theres tons of iP from the 80s just languishing. Haha a new Short Circuit game would be fun too.
