Enough time has now passed for the original Mickey Mouse character to become publicly available for use in media - basically, the design can no longer by copyrighted by the original owner. As a result, you're probably going to start seeing the iconic design crop up all over the place - and developer Nightmare Forge Games is wasting no time in using it.
Enter 'Infestation 88' - a new co-op horror game announced on the day Mickey Mouse moved into the public domain (the first iteration of the character anyway, AKA Steamboat Willie). We don't know too much about what this game will deliver just yet, aside from some horrifying imagery related to the infamous cartoon character.
You can check out some early footage of Infestation 88 in the trailer up above, and we'll drop a brief summary of what to expect down below.
"Announcing Infestation 88, a co-op horror in which you're an exterminator treating sinister infestations caused by twisted versions of classic characters and urban legends.
In the year 1988, what was thought to be an outbreak of vermin morphed into something far more sinister. Infestation 88 is an episodic, 1-4 player co-op survival horror game in which you and your friends are exterminators called in to treat these mysterious infestations."
At the time of writing the only platform confirmed so far is PC, with the game available to wishlist now on Steam. We'll keep our eyes peeled for any hints of an Xbox release - the team says it will be adding a bunch of FAQ answers to its official Discord page "within the next few days", so we should get more information on Infestation 88 shortly.
What do you make of this co-op horror game so far? Surprised to see Mickey Mouse already used in the public domain? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

It’s strange to me that this can happen and the character design no longer belongs to the original owner. Don’t really understand to be honest. Anyways, There’s no doubt Mickey Mouse character skins will start to pop up all over the place now.
@CharlieChooChoo Absolutely right! Among others Disney has taken work from authors and folklore in products like:
None of these were their original creations.
@Techno92LFC This is just part of the creative process. I am excited to see what people do with this now it is in the public domain, just as Disney did.
A great gaming / comics version is things like The Wolf Among Us which took lots of nursery rhymes and folklore to make the Fables series, which was turned into the game. Or God of War leaning on Greek and Norse Mythology. Sherlock Holmes etc. Excited for what comes next.
I suspect there are going to be continued legal battles over MIckey's image since there are many versions of Mickey that aren't in the public domain yet.
The original Mickey design is public domain, you say? Cuphead character skin anyone?
This looks like a slapped together mess. Please stop advertising clear cash grabs
Idk this looks like they rushed to be the first to do so.
If it's in game pass, i'll play it ...
This Mickey Mouse video game released its trailer on New Years Day also:

How is that possible did the original creator sell his rights or didn’t own the majority?
@TheSimulator As @CharlieChooChoo said this is just how public domain works. It's different in different countries. But generally it's X years after people's death. (sometimes it's X years after first publication)
It's worth bearing in mind that many of Disney's most famous films are NOT their original IP they just took works that were in the public domain and built on them, just as this game is now doing. e.g. Snow White, Aladdin, Beauty & the Beast, The Jungle Book (I listed more above and there are many more).
@Divide_and_Wander Have you seen this Cuphead style game with Mickey Mouse? They also released their trailer New Years Day:

I see why Disney fought for copyright protections for so long.
