It's taken a month to arrive, but we might finally have a permanent fix for the Baldur's Gate 3 deleted saves issue on Xbox! A firmware fix was rolled out to all Xbox users yesterday, but for now at least, it needs to be activated manually.
To do this, you'll need to head over to the "Settings" menu on your Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S:
- Go to the Settings app on your Xbox
- Select "System"
- Go down to "Updates"
- In here, you should see a prompt to "Update Console" (unless it's already updated)
We should point out that this firmware fix won't bring back any old Baldur's Gate 3 saves on Xbox, so if you've lost a bunch of hours in the past, you're sadly out of luck. The hope is that it will prevent any issues like this from reoccurring in the future, although it's too early for us to say whether it's solved the problem for good just yet.
Fingers crossed we don't get any more reports of this - and it might even have fixed the issue in other games as well!
Have you been having any save game issues with Baldur's Gate 3 on Xbox? Tell us down below.

I've been holding off because of the save issue, I'll see if this takes. Luckily I'll have "Infinite Wealth" to let the community see how successful the fix will be.
@abe_hikura I'm chomping at the bit for Infinite Wealth next week!
If anyone is about to start it after holding on for this fix, here’s a tip - every few level-ups you get the opportunity to pick a ‘feat’. Although there’s a long list to choose from, the first one you pick should always be ‘Alert’. This raises your initiative score, so you’ll always go first in any combat. Without it, in bigger fights your team might be hit several times by higher-initiative enemies before you can even fight back.
@FarmDog08 Same, I'm not one for buying early access but it would be hard to refuse for IW. Luckily for me it doesn't overwise it'd be in the super expensive edition.
@abe_hikura I got the Ultimate Edition preordered for $5 due to the rewards program. I'm ready! I've only played Yakuza: Like A Dragon and Like A Dragon Gaiden. I love the turn-based RPG gameplay it has now with Ichiban leading the way.
Is this update solely intended to fix the BG3 issue or is it a more "general" fix that affects other games? Thanks
Really glad this has been sorted. Hopefully people will stop blaming Larian for something that was not there fault! I've been holding off playing the game until this matter was sorted as my run on the PC ran to over 350 in length, and I simply could not have coped had I lost such a long run to this issue. That said, the other issue I have is that I pre-ordered the physical Deluxe Edition from Larian. I haven't received my copy yet. Has anyone else received theirs?
So, one tiny bug, but the update is still the same 500+ MB it always is. Why always exactly the same size for system patches no matter what's being patched? I call *****. Just like PubG updates being perpetually 9GB on Xbox no matter what the fix, even when the same exact version patch is only 200MB on PC.
@Luca91 It's focused around the BG3 fix, but it was mentioned in the patch notes that it should address various games.
I usually don't hesitate to update console firmware, however, shortly after I bought my console (over a year ago), I updated my firmware and it lead to a sound issue (specific to Samsung televisions), where my sound stopped working on the dashboard and in certain games. Eventually, it worked itself out; though I'm not sure whether or not it was an update for the console or the television itself. Either way, it was a real pain in the butt and really put a damper on my gaming experience.
Because of this, I'm definitely going to wait a couple months so I can see if there are any unintended consequences.
On a side note, I haven't had any issues with my saves disappearing...so if it ain't broken, don't fix it.
And in case you're wondering how I've never had any save issues...well for one, I limit the overall amount of saves I have in games with gigantic file sizes, I save manually before exiting to the start screen and then, while on the start screen, I close the game's quick resume from the console's dashboard. Then, before closing the console down, I wait a minute or two, to allow any background uploads to complete, before powering the console off from the consoles settings. I have remote play enabled, but in power saving mode, so that the console has to be manually powered on, before I'm able to play from another device. I can't guarantee that this method will save you from losing save files...but this has worked for me, up until now.
@NoLifeDGenerate Even if it's a small change; the reason the file size remains rather large, is because they're not adding or subtracting a few lines of code within a file, they're replacing files in thier entirety. Hope that helps.
CP77 is having save problems for me. I don't like the genre BG3 is set in, so that's not for me. About every 2nd save actually works/takes in CP77. Hopefully this general firmware update fixes the CP77 issue too.
Yay at last. As some others have, I've also been waiting for this fix until I buy it. Hopefully barring no issues in the next few days I'll be jumping in this weekend.
Really stoked for this.
Also @PROPS : yeah have the same problem myself sometimes. Also using Samsung TV. For some reason on occasion on boot up, there's no sound on the dashboard. Always works after a console reboot though.
@jedinite With my Samsung TV, the only fix was holding down the television remote's power button, until the TV powered off and back on again. Regardless of whether I was in game or on the dashboard, the power button fix worked without fail. The resetting the console rarely worked for me, so it wasn't worth the effort.
Funny thing happened this morning...when I went to power on my console, it didnt turn my TV on (I have the HDMI-CEC features enabled). So after I manually powered on my TV, the controller's Xbox button didn't switch TV inputs. Once I manually turned my TV on and manually switched TV inputs (first world problems), I noticed Baldurs Gate 3 had an update. According to one of Pure Xbox's articles, the console firmware update was supposed to be manual... But now I'm beginning to wonder if it automatically updated the conditions firmware, because those HDMI-CEC features are no longer working.
*Update Holding my TV remote's power button down while powering off and back on again seems to have fixed my HDMI-CEC issue.
