As Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time passes its 20-year anniversary, the team at Ubisoft has provided an update on its much-delayed remake of the 2003 original. The new project was first announced more than three years ago, before development was halted and restarted in 2022. However, the folks over at Ubisoft Montreal have now seemingly hit a new internal milestone.
We don't know what that milestone actually is, but hopefully it means that this project is back on track and will be in our hands sooner rather than later. Here's the team's update, via Twitter:
"As you know, the passionate team at Ubisoft Montreal is reimagining this legendary story, and we are glad to announce today that the project has passed an important internal milestone and development is progressing.
We look forward to sharing more in the future!"
Only back in May of this year did we find out that this remake was still at an "early stage" of development, so who knows when we might actually get to play this thing. It's good to know that things are moving in the right direction though - we did have fears that this remake may get cancelled eventually!
As for the impatient among us, the original Xbox version of the game is completely playable on Xbox One and Series X|S via backwards compatibility - so that's always an option! Unfortunately you can't seem to buy the game digitally anymore, but physical buyers and existing owners can play this one on modern Xbox consoles with no issue.
What do you make of this turbulent development process? Still have high hopes for the final product? Tell us down below.

So long as they have the “no-no, that’s not how it happened” on death I’ll be happy.
As with all remasters and remakes if you are going to do it, then do it well, otherwise don't bother. It needs to be worthy of the original.
In terms of story and puzzles little needs to change, it's pretty timeless. What does need to be updated is the combat which was pretty bad even at release, some QoL features and obviously a fresh coat of paint.
A shame the voice actress for Farah did one game and changed career to become a lawyer (good for her, sad for us) as the chemistry between her and the Prince (Yuri Lowenthal) was core to the game. Hopefully whoever they get will be just as good.
One of my favorite games of the PS2 era.
The OG Xbox version still looks amazing on Series X with all the behind the scenes enhancements making it already look like a fairly modern game, certainly not a 20 year old one
"It's not canceled!"
-important dev milestone
@themightyant "...it's pretty timeless"
I see what you did there.
