Persona 5 Tactica Is Available Today With Xbox Game Pass (November 17)

I think there's some bug or something on my region because the DLC is costing as much as a freaking console lol

This is an intimidating franchise to pick up. I even own a few of them on various platforms and haven't gotten around to playing them. The naming system doesn't help. I own 3 versions of "5" and have no idea what the difference is. Where does Q fit in? Where do other Shin Megami Tensai games fit in to all this? etc.

I'm torn on whether to emulate the old stuff, just dive into a random one, or keep the sealed cases on the shelf. Whenever I think I might choose one for my next game, I always find something else.

@BacklogBrad i feel the same. I only played Persona 5 royal. But I'll dive into this as I'm a tactics fan and enjoy what I did play of 5. I think I'll buy persona 4 golden next on switch, and wait for persona 3 reload on gamepass next year. I don't know much about the series other than the 20ish hrs I played of 5, but most say that's the one to play if any. Shin megami I think is more serious from what I can understand. I own IV and V but haven't played them yet either.

You really don't need to play the older games or even in order. P3, P4 and P5 ara each its own thing.
I would say the only one you need previous knowledge to play is P2 (because it has characters from P1).

Shin Megami Tensei is the main series from which Persona came from. SMT is usually post-apocalyptic setting with mature themes while Persona is more school simulation with Jungian's themes.

SMT games are also known to be hard whereas Persona games are on the easier side.

P3, P4 and P5 each have a "vanilla" version and then another one with more content and quality of life improvements.

Persona Q is a spin-off based on a mix of Persona and Etrian Odyssey gameplay.
The spin-offs should be played after the main game.

When it comes to the Persona series. It is own thing, each iteration.

Persona 4G is the definitive edition of P4.
P3 FES is the complete edition of P3.

P3 remake is the main base game without the DLC.

P5 Royal is definitive version of P5. P5 strikers is the sequel to P5 and tactics is another sequel of P5(mildly). You will be fine if you play P5 Royal it will fit in with the sequels.

Shin Megami Tensei is a different beast. They're way too many to write down.

I would personally recommend P3 because it has more mature storyline where P4 is less of that with more slice of life. P5, is practically culmination of P3 and P4. Like the peak of the series for now.
