Killer Instinct: Anniversary Edition Update Goes Live This Week

It's interesting that how they say the following MATURE RATED content will not be included from the definitive version, and then list the KI classics. I would think those are less mature than the current one. Or maybe they just lost the licenses to sell the aracde versions?

I must correct the second article a second time because all versions of the game on all platforms are upgraded to Anniversary Edition.

In short, we are upgrading all versions of Killer Instinct to the Anniversary Edition.

The following Mature-rated content included in Killer Instinct Definitive Edition will NOT be included in the Anniversary Edition: Definitive Edition Application, Killer Instinct 1 and Killer Instinct 2. If you already own Killer Instinct Definitive Edition digitally, you will still be able to download the above content even after the Definitive Edition is retired.

The premium content VIP Double XP Booster and holiday accessories will also be part of Anniversary Edition.

@dok5555555 Yes, the third entry is more "mature", but who knows why the ratings are like that. I wonder if they'll make the first and second games available in the future. It's unclear. I'd recommend everyone interested to get the Definitive Edition now.

So is the only change if you already own it that the name changes to anniversary edition?

Still sounds like a massive downgrade if you don't care about the cosmetics. But I suppose everyone that cares probably has it by this point anyways??

Still a sign of times, instead of a new game all we’re getting is a 10 year old game remastered (I guess?) and turned f2p/gaas.

Not that I need games, eh, can’t find the time to play all they’ve put on game pass these last few months, but still.

Not that it’s a bad game but again with the recycled content, modern gaming is lots of ‘remasters’ at the moment. MW3, Forza, the last of us! Some companies are worse than others but they love repackaging old stuff as they can’t push out original games. That’s why games like Alan wake 2, the Jedi survivor series, Robocop and to a lesser extent immortals should be appreciated

Does this mean if I want the original KI 1 & 2 games on Xbox, I need to buy the definitive version before it's retired?

KI must still have a pretty sizable amount of people playing it to make it worth upgrading after all this time. Not bad for a 10-year old fighting game 👍

No sequel after 10 years is crazy

I do agree with your comment completely.

I do think MS is doing a good mix of old and new though. Age of Empires 4, Psychonauts 2, Forza Horizon 5, Halo Infinite were all new entries in existing IPs. Then Ghostwire, Deathloop, HiFi Rush, Redfall, Minecraft Legends, and Starfield are all new IPs.

And as we go forward there is Fable reboot, Avowed, Clockwork Revolution, Hellblade 2, South of Midnight, Everwild, Perfect Dark reboot, State of Decay 3, and Indiana Jones all announced. So, I think they are mixing things up pretty good. At least better than the other two first parties I think (this generation).

@NeoRatt Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony are all guilty of this. I think Microsoft actually take more chances with new IPs and that’s to their credit. I’ve just watched a video about the last of us 2 and it’s ridiculous. I’d much rather games like Redfall and starfield (although in my opinion both could have been better) were great to play through as they were something new.
