The U.S. video game sales data for September 2023 has been shared today courtesy of Circana (formerly known as The NPD Group), with the firm claiming that Starfield was the best-selling video game across all platforms last month.
Circana says this is based on physical and digital purchases, and ranked by dollar sales. Here's the top 10:
- Starfield
- Mortal Kombat 1
- EA Sports FC 24
- Madden NFL 24
- Payday 3
- NBA 2K24*
- The Crew: Motorfest
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
*Digital sales not included
It's interesting to see that Starfield took the crown despite being included with Xbox Game Pass on day one, and Payday 3 is another Game Pass launch that made the list - although that one did end up releasing on PS5 as well.
As a result of Starfield's success in September, it's apparently now the seventh best-selling game of the year in the U.S. so far, although it's worth pointing out that its "lead sales platform" has apparently been PC rather than Xbox.
Still, Microsoft won't care where the sales are coming from... it's a big success story however you look at it!

Doesn't shock me one bit though I imagine there were a ton of steam sales
I’m surprised Xbox didn’t sell more than what the ps5 sold.
I expected starfield to shift a few consoles also
The hype was real! Reviews are one thing but the people have voted with their wallets….
I played it on gamepass its a buggy mess at the minute still a good game though i still enjoyed it but if I'd have payed 70 id have wanted a refund that's for sure still the potentials there for a great game definitely well thats My opinion anyway I know we all different ones
@PsBoxSwitchOwner it sold better than usual and ranked 2nd overall. The reality is the way Microsoft is selling its services it will allways be hard to sell as much as playstation and Nintendo as you can play your games also on PC (Xbox or steam) and cloud. The numbers they are more focused is subscriptions notheless...
I am close to 200 hours in the game and just started NewGame+. I don't regret buying the Constellation Edition. Although the watch was a bit disappointing, the screen is too small for my taste.
Sold well and will continue to sell number’s late into it’s life the way most Bethesda RPG’s do. Can’t wait to see what else is coming now that SF and Forza are out. I am disappointed that we will be heading into the start of year 4 for Xbox with nothing mentioned for Gears of War. But i suppose the wait for that will be worth it or i so hope so.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner As @Balta666 states, Starfield isn't exclusive to the Xbox console so not everyone who was interested in playing Starfield would need to buy a Series S/X to play.
The entry point for playing is the Cloud - a cheap monthly subscription allowing you to play games on ANY compatible hardware (inc XB1, Mobiles, Tablets etc) without needing to spend several Hundred+ on hardware. Its also available on Steam and Steam deck too so not the ONLY console either and those who may prefer PC gaming also don't need a Console to play Day 1 or miss out.
With Spider-Man 2, its ONLY available Day 1 on PS5 so you have to buy a Playstation to play it on release. Those on PS4 have to upgrade or miss out, PS+ wont help them play it. Those on PC or Steam have to buy a PS5 or miss out - at least until Sony decides to release it on PC in a year or two.
Therefore a 'big' game release for MS isn't going to drive Console sales like it will for Sony - simply because gamers have more choice. Yes to get a 'premium' 4k Console like experience, Cloud won't suffice but its still a viable option for many. It still allows them to play on XB1 for example at 1080/30 offering better than 'native' would on that Hardware, even if its not as 'great' as playing on a Series X.
Therefore, Gamers don't need a Series S/X specifically to play Starfield so Console sales may not 'grow' as much as you expect or as much as Sony's games may help sell Playstation because Sony limit the 'choice' for gamers - you must buy/own a Playstation, Buy the game before you play etc or Miss out.
Different business models...
@Dan1283 Hmmm I’m level 13 and have done a lot of missions/quests and have only seen 1 slight bug. Very minor, an enemy spun around for a few seconds after being dispatched. Playing on XSX.
@YourNameHere well it'd been crash after crash for me on the series s but not sure about the series x and I've had no problem with any other game so it's definitely starfield that's the problem sea of stars hasn't crashed once
@PsBoxSwitchOwner
How do you know how many consoles Xbox sold? They haven't given out that information for years
@BAMozzy I do know how it works, but thanks for the breakdown. Could have saved yourself a lot of time lol.
But you know there were articles on Xbox selling 1000% more. US is Microsoft’s home and usually they are very close to ps5 sales there. So for a big flagship game it surprises me that it hasn’t enticed people over to buying an Xbox.
You would imagine there would be an uptick, even if just in the short term
@Dan1283 the reality is when you buy a game for $70 you are buying a future patched game and not the game currently released.
bought mine physical. took a month's break from gamepass while i played it, planned to take longer because i've bought too many games but GP is just too good.
I haven't bought my physical copy yet, I might hold out for complete edition that includes DLC.
Five 1st party xbox games in the top 20 though.
It's surprising that Baulders Gate 3 has failed to chart in September, especially with the Aug 31st PS5 release. I guess it didn't sell very well on consoles.
I Uninstalled it yeste4day after 50hs
.it was a good game but nothing special tbh.
Nothing was pulling me back to play more
@AlwaysPlaying well that's true and true with most games released now unfortunately
I wonder what the sales numbers were for each platform.
How is it they don’t count digital sales for consoles but PC is usually 100% digital sales…?!
@PsBoxSwitchOwner There probably has been an uptick in hardware sales but maybe still not enough to topple Sony with Spider-Man 2 coming and aggressive pricing they had before announcing the 'Slim' at its new price.
All thi article states is that the PC version was selling more than the Console version - where most on Console probably have Game Pass yet Steam PC gamers won't, let alone those who may choose to buy the special edition with early access/DLC also helped 'sales' too. Console gamers probably chose to wait for the GP version...
Starfield, just a terrible game when looking at all its parts but I'm enjoying it enough to be several hours in. It feels like it hasn't progressed since fallout 3 other than graphics. I honestly think if this was not in space and they called it Elder scrolls VI it wouldnt be received so well. I mean the bugs, the controls, the gameplay, the loading mechanics (every room is a loading screen, no door actually opens), the art direction, the dialogue, the story. It just hasn't really moved on. But for some reason I really want to complete this one. Although the temple missions are an incredibly bad game design. Took me 10 mins to float through the last 'bit' to the point I almost gave up as assumed it was a game breaking bug!
If I was to sum the game up after being so hyped for it, I'd say it's good enough but I don't see it having the legs of a Skyrim unfortunately.
I’m loving the game because it’s both relaxing and stimulating in equal measure.
Xbox is not about consoles anymore. We all know the route Xbox is going and it’s about an ecosystem. I suspect the next Xbox will be the last console from them.
Streaming sticks, boxes and even more systems having GamePass is their future now.
@Moonglow A good game will benefit from GamePass. Bad games will suffer but not due to GamePass.
GamePass hugely benefits games despite what haters say.
Curious. I bought the 30 dollar early access. Does that count as a sale or am I still considered in GP because all I “technically” own is the digital art book?
I really enjoyed starfield and it's well deserved as far as I'm concerned , the thing that really excites me is the long term support they are going to be giving to it , can't wait to see what they have in store
@Reptilio I've just let my membership expire. I've played lots of Starfield over the past month, but I bought it and that and Mario Wonder will keep me occupied for the next month or so. Them I'll start my subscription back!
Let's hope Bethesda can capitalize on this momentum to make good DLC for the game and an Elder Scrolls 6 that lives up to expectations. While not a critical darling I do think this game could become a major franchise if they get the right people working on it.
I paid AUD$160 all up, and at 50 hours in and less than half-way through, that will be ~100h total @ $1.6/h, which is bargain pricing for HQ entertainment. Initially I thought there was too much talking, but moved the game into a less exciting timeslot in my day, and it's become golden time now. God bless you all. Don't forget about Jesus.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner phil already stated it wouldnt happen they need more than great games
Also its a new ip its not like thr sony using spiderman an ip they dont fully own to sell consoles
Best selling game of the month despite it also being on Game Pass is beyond impressive. It’s ridiculous.
@xMightyMatt14x I would think not. Counts towards total revenue, though not unit sales. It is another metric they should divulge. Thre was a roundabout way of doing so by number of players per platform in the first 5 days (pre-launch).
Not surprised at all that one of the most highly anticipated and biggest releases of the year was the biggest seller in the US. Game Pass only accounts for a small proportion of Xbox and PC players.
I AM surprised that Xbox Console sales were less than PS5 - though more than Switch - I thought Starfield would give it a decent bump, especially in the US.
More noticeably Xbox Series hardware sales ONLY saw single-digit percentage growth in consumer spending YoY. I thought that would be MUCH higher, especially when you think there was little of note released this time last year.
EDIT: And in Europe i've just seen Xbox hardware sales were DOWN 35% YoY in Sept 2023.
@Moonglow I take your first point generally, but it doesn't prove Phil completely right. If Starfield released to universal acclaim, was an 11/10 on meta, or more realistically a 95, instead of being far more divisive - some 10s, some 6 & 7s but mostly 8 & 9s - then it MIGHT have sold a lot more consoles. But it wasn't, it's an 83.
Though I was someone that agreed with his statement generally. It's not ONE game that will make the change, it won't be that sudden, of course it will be over a longer period of time. I agree it's a long road, but it will just take even longer than I thought. I also agree Xbox is on a smart path to come back and is releasing good games consistently. But I still expected Starfield to shift that needle more than it has in the short term, it appears it didn't, that's what I found surprising.
For Xbox I agree this is great for their future prospects.
But as a gamer, who wants to have fun and share my hobby with other fellow gamers, just the very idea of this sucks. I hate this mass consolidation future and gating even more games behind walls like this, especially some of the most celebrated games series in history.
The ABK deal is only going to amplify this, others will follow suit, and gaming will be even more tribalistic in future. Just what we don't need imho. Ho-hum.
