Update (Wed 16th Aug, 2023): We've now got a date! The Making of Karateka launches August 29th for $19.99.
Original story (Tue 11th Jul, 2023): The classic 1984 game Karateka is getting a starring role in a brand-new "interactive documentary" launching on Xbox later this year courtesy of Digital Eclipse - the masterminds behind Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration.
Karateka was created by Prince of Persia developer Jordan Mechner, and is described by Digital Eclipse as having "changed the industry", setting the tone for "decades of cinematic gaming experiences to come".
In the game, you'll be able to explore the history of Karateka through video, digital artifacts, audio, photos and more, and it'll also include the playable final retail versions of Karateka along with unfinished prototypes and the first official release of Deathbounce, which is an arcade-style shooting game that Jordan was making prior to Karateka.
You'll even get the chance to play Karateka Remastered, which is a brand-new version of the original with updated graphics, music and gameplay, as well as a new version of Deathbounce called Deathbounce: Rebounded.
"The Making of Karateka is the deepest, most exhaustive exploration of the making of a single video game that’s ever been attempted in a video game itself."
Better yet, Digital Eclipse says it'll be releasing more interactive documentaries for additional games as part of a "Gold Master Series". We don't have a date for the Karateka one just yet, but it's expected to arrive later this year.
We'll throw some screenshots for The Making of Karateka down below.

This will be a Day 1 purchase from me. Really happy this exists. I can’t wait to go back to this game decades later. I remember the original from my childhood and loved it.
I’m 42 and I remember the original prince of Persia really well but I’ve never heard of this before. Looks interesting from a retro point of view. My favourite retro stuff is mid 90s - megadrive, snes and Saturn. Massive sega fan. But love stuff like this too and old micro computer stuff
Yummy!!! Very interesting concept. Day one for sure, they can ask whatever they like, I'll gladly pay.
C64/128 and later Amiga 500/1000 are my childhood and first pc’s I paid myself from doing my first ever jobs My personal favorite is still International Karate (+)
Very interested in this. Sort of games to put on XBLA, like in the good old days (overall gaming is better now ofc )
The XBLA remake of Karateka on 360 was great, shame it never made it into the BC program.
@LordFunkalot I'm the same age and have played through the majority of 1001 games to play before you die as well as reading a copious amount of gaming magazines. I have never heard of Karateka. Is it like IK+ or more in line with the likes of shinobi? Anyhow I'm glad it exists and will pick it up. Hopefully digital eclipse do a better job with achievements compared to the Atari collection - mostly nails and mostly in the crap haunted house remake.
Blimey I’m old ….I remember spending hours and hours playing this & Dropzone on my Atari 400
Strange I don't even know what to say.
Didn't this appear in the Van Damme classic, Bloodsport?
One of my all time favorite games and most memorable. Spent an insane amount of time with this game as a kid.
Love this idea of interactive documentaries. Sort of a hands on museum exhibit at home. I really need to pick up the Atari collection.
@Pusher2021 IK+ , would love a modern version with todays tech. And throw in a version of Panzer Kick boxing for good measure.
