If Ubisoft didn't already have enough Assassin's Creed projects in the works, there's now a new report from Kotaku, claiming it's working on a remake of the fourth major game Black Flag (aka "the pirate one").
According to "two sources familiar with the plans", who are apparently not authorised to discuss this information publically, the remake is still in its "earliest stages" and still has at least a few years to go before it's complete.
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag was originally released on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One in 2013 and developed by Ubisoft Montreal. In the case of the remake, Ubisoft Singapore - known for evolving Assassin's Creed "ocean tech" and the main studio behind Ubisoft's upcoming project Skull and Bones - is believed to be "heavily involved".
Ubisoft has declined to comment on the Kotaku report, but if we hear any developments, we'll let you know.

I'm fully prepared for an ACIV remake to come out before Skull and Bones.
Lazy nobody asked for this
I said the same thing on Pushsquare, but this was a crossgen title last generation. We don’t need remakes of games so soon. At least wait like 3 generations for a remake or more.
People want Prince of Persia and Beyond Good and Evil so Ubisoft says here is the 477th Assassins Creed game in 12 years 🤨
every time another boring remake is made god rips out the wings of an angel and casts it to hell where demons suck out the angel blood in order to sustain their accursed non-lives.
While we're on the subject, I think it's about time that Nintendo does a remake of Elite Beat Agents.
I really hope this is true, best AC game since the first one. It only ran at 900p and 30 FPS. Would really like this to feel a little more modern for replay-ability.
Why am I thinking AC4 remake is just a new title for skull and bones?
@Cashews So every time a remake is announced we get a new Diablo or Doom? BRING ON THE REMAKES!!1
This sounds very strange. UBisoft, I don’t think, is in the habit of making “remakes”, and this game is recent enough to be OK.
So far UBisoft has mostly done remasters that are practically faithful ports. Given this is just a rumor, would not be surprised if that’s what this ends up turning out to be.
Gotta reclaim back some of that spiralling Skull & Bones development cost somehow.
While on paper I hate the idea of remaking a 10 year old game, if they do it PROPERLY, I might be interested. Many of the game mechanics have aged like French cheese and I did like the sea shanty simulator.
@Tharsman "A Ubisoft Unoriginal"
If you say Skull & Bones three times in a mirror a Assassins Creed IV Black Flag remake will appear.
@somnambulance at this point I'd rather it just got FPS boost, is this the only AC game that's not 60fps on Xbox?
Bit pointless if you ask me
@Solidchief what a ridiculous and nonsensical comment. No way can this be true. Unless I'm doing it wrong, but it hasn't worked the last 5 times I've tried.
Ubisoft is confused, 2D Prince of Persia no one asked for and a remake to a game that still holds up to this day
@BrilliantBill @carlos82 I’m not sure, but FPS boost is about all this game realistically needs. Personally, I don’t feel AC4 is aged to the point it’s necessary.
I would've preferred Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. However can we stop with the remakes. I really wish they'd focus on making a new Splinter Cell
Oh great. Just great. Why?
@Phantom_Anima You need to do this at exactly 3:00 am and must be holding a copy of the original Assassins Creed IV Black Flag in order for it to work. Be careful, the powers of Ubisoft should be taken seriously or else you'll be stuck in purgatory like Beyond Good & Evil 2 and Prince of Persia Sands of Time Remake.
Maybe they are trying to take a page out of Capcom's Resident Evil handling, since its been very successful for them, if this is a true remake, I'll be disappointed about the wasted resources.
If given an option on full AC remakes, I would had so much more hoped them to pursue a remake of the original game.
Probably my least favorite AC. Might be the first one I don't buy if it ends up being true.
If they're making remakes, shouldn't they start off with the first and second AC?
@BrilliantBill The 10 years figure definitely made sense in the past... Resident Evil and Conker's Bad Fur Day received remakes after just 6 and 4 years, respectively- and the audiovisual upgrades were more than enough to justify it.
There are plenty of other games from that era that arguably deserved remakes in the '00s as well, for graphical and gameplay reasons, because things were changing so quickly.
But now? Wasn't Halo 3 still perfectly enjoyable and accessible in 2017, a decade after its release? And why wouldn't it still hold up on its 20th anniversary as well? I don't think games have evolved much since 2007, though I'm curious if you feel differently- and why.
Ubisoft hasn't got a damn clue what their fans want. We can't have BG&E2. We can't have a new Rayman. We can't have a new Splinter Cell. We can finally have a new POP, albiet a 2.5D metroidvania with terrible trailer music. It seems they're just the Asscreed and Farcry company now. 😒
Shouldn’t the skull and bones devs like….I donno FINISH skull and bones before they start working on something else?
@somnambulance In all fairness how much of the Xbox One's library were just remasters or remakes of 360 titles? That's not to defend this, but to point out this has been a pre-existing issue for awhile now.
I can only assume that they hope to recoup some of the losses from Skull and Bones development by reusing some of the assets for a recognisable IP.
@shoeses and that’s arguably a huge problem with the Xbox One’s catalogue and how the PS4 could take market advantage more securely last generation.
@somnambulance It was a problem with the PS4's library too but they had more IPs to either make new games for or make their own collections of. Which is what makes some of the backwards compatibility choices so weird, because a lot of the games still ended up being playable on modern hardware through said remakes & remasters. But some of the originals are better than the ports, so it feels weird they didn't go all in with it.
Love Black Flag, just hope Ubi don’t ruin it!
I am 100% on board with this!! I Love Black Flag!
No point, just do a small update.
@Exerion76 and another pointless comment. My comment about the pointless comment is also pointless.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they just canned Skull and Bones and just morphed it into this instead.
I’ll probably be in the minority on this one, but I’ll take an actual remake of AC IV any day of the week. By far the best of the series imo and I would definitely enjoy playing through it again if it’s a quality remake. I would be all over this game.
@BrilliantBill Oh yeah, those character models are pretty bad, even compared to other games from that year (or from 5 years earlier, for that matter).
I wonder if the rigging system could allow for the models to be swapped out for higher-poly versions, at least during cutscenes. Basically a more in-depth remaster, without rebuilding everything from scratch. Because now that you mention it, H3 was really jarring at first, especially seeing the downgrade in Johnson's face compared to H2 Anniversary!
You consider H1 Anniversary's cutscenes to have aged poorly compared to Reach and H4, though? It didn't strike me as having issues, whether compared to the others or on its own (besides changing H1's art direction a bit much), though I did start with H1A before moving on to the later ones.
@old-dad Well, unlike the others you mentioned, AC is actually saying like crazy every year, they'll stop making them once people stop buying them
I love most AC games, but this seems a bit pointless. If I recall, it was already released for 360 then again for X1?
@Vepra I enjoy AC games, especially the last 3 but a remake of a game that is readily available in both digital and physical that also saw a release for last gen hardware ? Not a fan myself
@old-dad Yeah I get it, I don't really care about AC personally but I know that if they'll remake it, it will sell and if it will sell we will see more and more unnecesary remakes
Im a huge black flag fan, I cant pretend Im not up for this.
Why Skull and Bones? It should always have been Black Flag 2.....
This is the final form of skull and bones, an add on to the remastered AC IV.
