It's almost time for gamescom 2023! The huge event returns in late August (23rd to the 27th), and Xbox has confirmed it will be in attendance - on the showfloor at the very least - when the event takes place in Cologne, Germany.
Xbox's Aaron Greenberg followed up today's news by teasing that it would be a "special year" for Xbox at gamescom, promising to share more details in the near future. Here's a look at his tweet:
For now, we don't have any information on whether Xbox will be hosting a live showcase at gamescom 2023, but it sounds like that could be the case. We did get a pretty comprehensive showcase back in 2021, although last year's version was just a simple day-long livestream that didn't give us much to shout about.
It remains to be seen what "special" plans Xbox has in store for this year, although keep in mind that the event is taking place immediately prior to the launch of Starfield, so expect plenty of hype for Bethesda's new RPG at the event.
What are you hoping to see from Xbox at gamescom 2023? Tell us down in the comments below.

It could be a Special Year for Xbox - by then they 'should' own ABK too and so may have something 'Special' with that.
It's also possible that we could get some announcement - My prediction would likely be Gears related - Maybe that UE5 Gears Collection that's been 'expected' coming 'sooner' than people may expect (this year maybe) and a teaser for Gears 6. Announce the Collection coming Nov/Dec time and then tease Gears 6 so we know for certain what the Coalition are working on...
Apart from maybe some 'updates' on the games we didn't get to hear about - Everwild, Perfect Dark, State of Decay 3 etc, I expect them to spend most time on the Games coming in the next 6months or so in the ''Showcase'
Obviously I expect Starfield & Forza to have a big presence at Gamescom itself - I can see MS doing its usual Forza booths for people to play with Steering wheel and full Racing sim set-up. Maybe builds of Avowed and Hellblade 2 to 'try' as well as their 3rd Party/indie Partners too. They usually have quite a 'presence' at Gamescom - even if we only 'focus' on their 1-1.5hrs presentation.
Before anyone comments about 'Should' own ABK, I refer to their plan is to own ABK and its already 'passed' in the EU where Gamescom is held. The planned Closure date is before Gamescom so I say 'Should' be complete...
isn't this the guy with the 60 fps is standard lie?
This is the same guy that said 60 fps would be the standard this gen for series sx.
@Kaloudz I like this Greenburg better
I'd guess they're trying to make a similar impact with Starfield here as Nintendo did with BotW at E3 2016.
They need to start building some hype around HellBlade 2. That walking and crawling under a rock video at the showcase last month was boring and a waste of the show’s time and budget. It did nothing to show gamers what they need to see and thats some combat and upgrades to the original. I still believe Hell Blade 2 is an early to mid 2024 title, so it’s time to start building some hype for it. Maybe i am wrong. But i wasn’t wrong that many gamers found the show footage of this game boring.
Zero credibility so whatever this guy says is instantly of no consequence.
Man I hope so. Their "E3" show was great. Best show in a while. Hopefully this is more if the same!
@Grumblevolcano considering they have floor space. I’d say you are right.
I like Aaron Greenberg, but this is literally the same thing everyone in Xbox corporate always says when we’re about to get trailers for games that are in pre-production. I feel like we get more exciting news when they tell us to “temper our expectations.”
@Grumblevolcano that isn't possible. BotW had never been heard of until that show. We all know exactly what Starfield is, it's street date and what it will look like.
MS will never get the type of reactions Nintendo fans can give on true surprises. There isn't a character or series people care about at that level yet. Once Master Chief but it's been a minute.
@Moonglow yeah I agree with your points. I hope their is more that we don’t know about like a Gears of War collection and with this rumor heating up of a Red Dead 1 remake, the games could be there for second half of 2023 and then some surprises for 2024. They should have plenty to show us with the amount of studios they have. 😊
@HonestHick you guys need to understand that companies never want to overshadow there new product talking about next year products!! I said it like 5 times here, i guess i need to make it moee clear, imagine samsung announcing a new phone lets name it V series next year and show unbeleivable spexs when they are yet to release their new Galaxy phone this year
Sells will get hit hard
Yes its different but companies want people to talk only about their coming soon product and nor overshadow it with another annouce
Ah shoot..... He's open his fat sucker again, this guy's bad for Microsoft, they should've fired him with the Don Mattrick crew. Maybe he's only there because he was Phils frat buddy
Now that the major games upcoming have been announced, how's about some service updates for your loyal fans/customers?
-enable external blu-ray support for Series S before Sony makes their dumb new separated console thing? It costs Microsoft nothing aside from enabling it.
-some update on the Gold sub no longer being required for online play?
-since the ABK deal is likely to be completed in some form by then, an update on the Battle.net integration into the Xbox Infrastructure? And how soon are those games coming? And will you provide an updated controller scheme for Starcraft, WC3 and so forth?
-the spoken of New wave of back-compat titles held up by the ABK license?
Ya know, minor stuff.
I’m curious to see how good of a showing it will be coming off of E3, which was one of their best overall showings I have seen in a long time.
@Cashews The comparison I was making is that BotW was the only 1st party Nintendo game playable on the show floor at E3 2016 and it completely stole the spotlight.
@TakeItEasy i understanding marketing and building hype for what’s to come, but then why even show HellBlade 2 at the show if all she is going to do is crawl under a rock and stare at the water? Use that time to show us something that is further along or coming out soon. From what they showed of HellBlade 2 i would have been happier if it skipped the show. That show was to build hype on games. Fable isn’t coming out any time soon but they showed it to give us a glimpse of what’s to come. Marketing is something i am more than confident in saying MS get’s wrong more than right.
@Grumblevolcano my only point is that there is nothing Starfield could ever do that would ever compare to that reveal ever; in any scenario.
@HonestHick oh it doesnt take me long that i will figured they want to keep the game on the picture but they dont want it to take the lead in that picture ok il make it simple "oh remember we still have this game coming to you on 2024 with great graphics and story but hey we know you want to see more but hey you got Starfield to play this year" proceed to drop 45 min of gameplay for the main game this year
Please dont make me make a cartoon about this lol, its a simple thing you guys need to just think about if something is logical or not
Why would they reveal a gameplay and expose potentiely their main game of 2024 in 2023 just 3 mo'ths before thier main game this year? Why they need to market it and make it rival starfield in media and gaming community!!!
You want to show poeple that the game is going nicely thats it we want poeple talking about starfielf only, starfield this starfield that and they hugely succeeded even PlayStation focused sites like n4g cant have a day without starfield being on the hot topics of the day
@TakeItEasy cause when they showed Hell blade 2 a few years ago it was a great video and the game was even further away from release. This time they showed something so boring i would have rather had a indie game in the time space they wasted on her crawling under a rock. That did nothing for the game. Those shows have a limited amount of time, they are there to make you excited and then turn it off and go to the next game. Building hype to the big 2023 release Starfield. Having someone stare at water does nothing for the flow of the show. That stopped the show dead in its tracks. Marketing is building hype not boring or confusing people.
@Krysus there's a Reddit page where you can share your thoughts and feedback that might be seen by the Microsoft team. I think its called xbox insider. But a lot of requests have been ignored, so I'm not sure if they are actually reading these feedbacks.
@BAMozzy as speculative as your post is I appreciate it, because all of those dreams could come true and I expect are being worked on despite the legal troubles with the ABK purchase right now.
You know ABK has both Xbox and Ps5 versions in mind right now... But depending on the outcome we'll see how things play out. I doubt M$ will prevent any game from coming out on Ps5 right away if the aquisition goes through. If the devs have put in the work they aren't just going to shut them down outright and deprive them (and themselves, mind you) of that revenue.
Xbox has a somewhat unique position in the market that way. They can release wherever they want. Sony however... That would be blasphemy and a blemish on their brand if they released on other platforms. But I still believe that is also their weakness.
As time goes on and Microsoft continues to be open to releasing games on other platforms, I think it will be interesting how consoles handle that view going forward. Exclusives are awesome, they take advantage of the hardware and scream "we are better!" but at the same time, M$ has shown the ability to scale releases dependent on platform. Yeah I'm not going to get the full COD game on a switch... And I expect that... But if they could deliver something similar, or at least a very fun alternative for that audience given the hardware at hand, there are still a lot of experiences that could be had.
With Sony somewhat fumbling the bag at their own not-E3 event (though in reality it was only first party that wasn't great) Microsoft have a good opportunity to gain some momentum here which will also lead into Starfield. Hope to see it.
@XsERTzX The difference will be that with ABK, they are predominantly making Multi-player games. CoD, Overwatch, Diablo, WoW etc - all Multiplayer (or have a strong MP component) and an established Active Online Community on other platforms already to 'Sell' to.
Therefore it makes sense that these will remain 'Multi-platform' and be expanded out beyond just specific 'hardware', beyond just high-end PC's and latest Console(s) as MP games benefit the most by having as MANY active players as possible and as those 'Communities' of Gamers playing together is something MS has stated will 'continue' to be supported (like Minecraft Communities, ESO, F76 etc), I expect ABK games to 'mostly' remain Multi-platform.
However, Single Player games are more important as an Exclusive. They aren't going to benefit 'more' by having 'more' players as you still play 'Solo'. Games like Fallout, Elder Scrolls etc are not 'continued' stories, they are separate, self contained games where you create a Character to play through - not continuing the 'story' of a pre-deternined Character.
Single Player and/or 'Brand New IP's' with no Community of Online gamers already existing on other platforms is where I expect to see most Xbox exclusives from these Xbox Studios.
Mojang for example is 'multi-platform' because they are catering to the massive online Community of Minecraft players on whatever Platform they 'prefer' to play on - CoD and no doubt many other ABK games too will remain 'multi-platform' because they have established Communities on 'other' platforms and MS wants to 'expand' those to reach 'more' people...
@BrilliantBill i mean i suppose, but this one is supposedly 100X the budget of the first game and hired action fighting actors to provide better combat etc etc. i am not alone in thinking that was bad pacing for the show. I seen a lot of big YouTubers comment on how bad that was.
