2019's fantastic The Outer Worlds is getting a special definitive version on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S (along with various other platforms) next week in the form of The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition.
This version of the game will introduce various new features including a surprising remaster in the visual department, along with performance improvements, an increased level cap and all of the game's DLCs.
Here's a bit more about what you can expect:
• It’s The Outer Worlds you love, but even better: 2019’s hit RPG has been updated with better graphics, improved performance, additional animations, higher-res environments, and more.
• Increased level cap: A higher level cap means even more ways to build your character from the seven branches of the skill tree.
• The player-driven story RPG: In keeping with the Obsidian tradition, how you approach The Outer Worlds is up to you. Your choices affect not only the way the story develops, they also affect your character build, companion stories, and end game scenarios.
• Lead your companions: During your journey through the furthest colony, you will meet a host of characters who will want to join your crew. Armed with unique abilities, these companions all have their own missions, motivations, and ideals. It's up to you to help them achieve their goals, or exploit them to your own ends.
• Explore the corporate colony: Halcyon is a colony at the edge of the galaxy owned and operated by the Halcyon Holdings Corporate Board. They control everything... except for the alien monsters left behind when the terraforming of the colony’s two planets didn’t exactly go according to plan. Find your ship, build your crew, and explore the settlements, space stations, and other intriguing locations throughout Halcyon.
If you're wondering how you can get access to this version of The Outer Worlds if you already own the game and its DLCs on Xbox, you'll be able to upgrade to the "Spacer's Choice Edition" for a price of £5 in the UK. If you only own the base game though, it sounds like you'll be forced to cough up the full price (£49.99) for the new version.

The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition launches for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S on March 7th, 2023, and don't forget that you can already play the base game from 2019 right now on Xbox Game Pass.

will this new version be on gamepass?
@trev666 No mention of it yet.
@FraserG yeah seems odd they havnt mentioned gamepass yet. it really should be Microsoft games are supposed to be day 1 on gamepass the original outer worlds was
Hah! Awesome. Don't have the space anyway and I'm done paying for upgrades.
I would love it if this came to game pass. As a huge Obsidian fan I had been highly anticipating this game and hearing it was launching day one on game pass is when I realized I'd probably never unsubscribe.
Outer Worlds is also the reason I got the SX on launch haha. By the end, cleaning up side quests, I was traveling back and forth and just hating my xbone S taking nearly 2 mins to load on every single fast travel. It was brutal. I never did go back to play the dlc, I usually have moved on and don't jump back in to games I've already finished, but a complete edition optimized for SX might get me to replay it.
Would be surprised if this version ended up being on GamePass. DLCs are usually not included, but only the base games. Would still be nice if you could just buy the upgrade directly.
Sort of odd to remaster such a relatively new game, honestly. I’ll check it out if it’s on Gamepass perhaps, but no way I’m buying it for that price again.
I'm guessing the odd upgrade path is due to the publisher, isn't it Private Division or someone else?
The deal was all signed with them prior to Microsoft's acquisition of Obsidian, so the work for this might be contractual - with the Day One on Game Pass for this game being due to a big wad of money going to the publisher al la third party ones...
Don’t mind the DLC being a paid add on. But it will be a bit ***** if they don’t give you the base game optimised for Series consoles.
@Widey85 Yeah, it's Private Division.
Huh, I thought this updated version would come to Gamepass. Looks great but not sure when I’ll get around to it.
Ugh, hope it comes to GamePass…
Been meaning to get back to this game and would be nice to play the new version.
@trev666 they don't usually swap SKU's around though do they?
Even if sth like a complete edition exists, the base will never get swapped out for it on gamepass afaik.
At least it didn't before between Outer Worlds and its Board Approved bundle.
I hope to see it myself though, never did get to try its dlc
I own the physical copy, and none of the DLC's, so $6 to upgrade to the Spacers edition is a steal! Looking forward to this!
@TheCrafter1578 unfortunately as you dont own the DLCs you cant upgrade you have to buy it full price
@TheCrafter1578 you need to own the dlc to upgrade. It is full price if you don't own the dlc.
@Cherip-the-Ripper why couldnt both versions be on there the xbox one version and this new complete version. they do this with many games on gamepass
My understanding is this is still under Private Division and not Xbox studios. Hence the no GamePass route. Bummer.
There was already a free upgrade for this game a few years back which upped the frames to 60. Not sure i'll need ANOTHER upgrade ... Beaten it twice already.
I've yet to finish it so the new update looks enticing. Just need some off time to get in the game.
@trev666 cause it's the main way for them to make a profit on em.
Forza Horizon's complete editions haven't been on it either
I definitely won't finish playing without the upgrade at this point, but, if it's not on GP, I'll be waiting a long time for deep sales. I already own the original but not the DLC. The upgrade offer is great for DLC owners, but there really should be some sort of upgrade in place for people that own the base game, too.
Actually maybe it's not as bad as it seems. Assuming the upgrade is $5 in the US, that means if you own the base game and buy the season pass now for $25, and if you subscribe to GP you get -2.50, then $5 for the upgrade, it's $27.50 for base game owners to upgrade. If it actually works out that way? I'm tempted to get the expansions before it launches just to make sure that would work.
@awp69 it's under Microsoft

Would be very surprised if it is not included in Game Pass!
If game pass truly was such "fantastic value" this edition would be on game pass as well.
@Martsmall that is only for future iterations (entries, like a sequel or a spin-off). The ad image above states in the fine print it’s Private Division still.
I hope update will works with gamepass version.
@Cherip-the-Ripper i think more than anything it’s them hate keeping a current gen upgrade behind a full price price tag that seems a bit of a con. Not helped that as it’s obsidian it’s seen as a 1st party game(although it’s still published by Private Division so it’s not technically)
A remaster of a 2019 game for £50 doesn't feel good, and the requirement to have both DLC's for the upgrade path seems very harsh on those who bought the game just 3 years ago.
Where's all the indignation that was sent Naughty dogs way when they remastered TLOU? This is considerably newer.
Of course its a moot point if it does get a game pass release - which it absolutely should as its a 1st party game.
