Xbox boss Phil Spencer has sat down with Bloomberg to discuss all things Xbox, as the industry focuses on Gamescom 2022. Microsoft's head of gaming expressed how he feels about the ongoing Activision Blizzard deal, while also touching on what could potentially come next.
In short, Spencer says the company continues to look for creators outside of its "traditional markets", in an effort to diversify the Xbox portfolio both in terms of games and the studios behind those games.
It's reassuring to hear that Xbox is still looking to build out its first-party suite, even when such a momentous deal is going on behind the scenes. We don't expect to hear much about other studios while the ActiBlizz deal continues to progress, but hopefully, that deal will conclude in the near future.
Is there a certain studio you'd love to see Xbox pick up? Leave your suggestions down below.

As soon as the ABK deal is done, i feel there's a onslaught of little aquisitions being announced, one every week , I think behind the scenes all kind of deals have been made but MSFT didn't want to jeopardize the ABK deal in any shape or form
Whatever the case I hope they don't just sit on the back-catalogues of the companies they acquire. Port those older titles to console (and maybe slip in some split-screen multiplayer wherever possible), remake them, make sequels, etc.
Surely Asobo has to be one given Flight Sim...
Asobo would be the smartest purchase for them next
Sega confirmed!
Probably platinum games if I had to put money on it.
In different markets?
What is he implying there, maybe Microsoft are looking to buy business that are into TV and movies? Then make an higher tier gamepass which has games, TV series and movies, which would make sense with all the different devices they want gamepass on and how much money and effort they have put into their cloud structure and servers. I think they have hit the limit on game publisher/Studio purchases so maybe a big TV streaming company will be next.
@Bleachedsmiles I highly doubt that. If anyone buys Platinum, it probably would be Nintendo. Sega more than likely will stay independent so that games can stay multiplat.
@Rafie we shall see...
Personally I hope they don't buy any Japanese studios. I do hope they make deals with a load of japanese Devs though to produce games...and then, if they feel the need to buy one, buy the one they've proven they can work well with.
@Bleachedsmiles Definitely agree with that, especially the last statement.
@SplooshDmg that's a good bet to make, Netflix are obviously in trouble and don't have the ip's that Disney and amazon have, plus with the fox/WB merger I'd expect them to come out with something big in terms of TV/movies. But a big subscription service that has TV series, movies and games (big ones as well) would be a game changer
@Bleachedsmiles Who would buy Platinum at this point? Might as well buy Bed, Bath & Beyond while they're at it!
Phil has mentioned Japan before so maybe Platinum Games as they look in trouble begging for money or a few indie studios that they could invest in & grow. I'd love Sega as I'm a big fan. But In the future I could see Ukrainian & Russian studio's on the radar as they could be picked up cheaply once they try to rebuild after war & sanctions are eventually lifted. Emerging markets like India. Also maybe more South Korean Devs like Pearl Abyss etc.
@UltimateOtaku91 different markets mean Japan, Korea, etc.
Stuff like Netflix rumors are more relevant from a broad Microsoft perspective, not from a Phil perspective.
@NEStalgia was thinking the same, Platinum are a hit and miss and some of their games have just been terrible.
Plus they won't bring any ip's with them
@UltimateOtaku91 I doubt we'll see Xbox spending any further money on TV/Movies after the whole Xbox One generation, and they've already tried making TV/Movie content before with Xbox Entertainment Studios.
@Floki like @Tharsman said, anything like a Netflix purchase wouldn't be under Xbox/Phil's division at all and he probably would have only water cooler knowledge of it. that would come from a completely different division of MS. IDK what division, cloud services maybe? GP is weird because it's connected tightly with the cloud services despite being run outside it. But Xbox's bad brush with TV doesn't mean broader MS doesn't have an interest elsewhere. Besides, they did the Halo TV show. If that doesn't feel like an X1 launch product, what does?
