2K's publishing arm Private Division has announced that it's working on a new The Lord of the Rings game, in partnership with the team behind the film trilogy. Wētā Workshop's new gaming division will lead the project, which is expected to release in 2K's 2024 fiscal year.
Here's what Wētā Workshop's Head of Interactive had to say about the title:
It’s a privilege to create a new game set in Middle-earth, especially one that’s so different from what fans have played previously [...] As fans ourselves, we’re excited for gamers to explore Middle-earth in a way they never have before, and introduce new fans to the magic of The Lord of the Rings.
There's not much else to go on at present, especially with the game being so far away from launch. Still, it seems the team is opting to go in a different direction for the franchise, likely compared to WB's recent Middle-earth games.
We don't know of any platforms for this one yet either, although an Xbox release should be on the cards. With a 2023-24 release window, we'd hope it's next-gen only, on Xbox Series X and S.
Looking forward to more LOTR games? Let us know what you'd like to see!

Wish we could at least know the genre!
If they're just now starting it (which we don't know) that's only a two-year dev cycle. Hopefully it's not a mobile game or card battler or something.
I would personally be 1000% ok with a linear hack n slash like the old movie games, but with current gen physics, graphics, lighting, etc.
The only acceptable way for this game to be made is similar to Assassins Creed, Shadow of War, Shadow of Mordor, Batman Arkham series and other games like this. Single player only, huge open world with lots of collectibles and side missions, no online or co-op at all, tons of weapons to find and choose from, lots of different armor and outfits to choose from that actually change the look of your character, 3rd person view so you can see your character at all times, maybe have some dialogue choices to make it interesting in the story, exp points to upgrade your character and get new abilities/powers. This is the best way a game like this should be made and my absolute favorite genre of game.
please don't be based on the Amazon serie...
@XxEvilAshxX I agree. Maybe modernize the combat, but a linear adventure would be entertaining to me.
Christopher Tolkien safeguarded his father’s work and did a great job. Since he passed away, the Tolkien estate are determined to make a quick buck and defile the integrity and purity of his work.
@CaptainCluck I agree its like they have turned into gamesworkshop well sale to anyone quality be damned
The only thing I want to ask them is that I want to be able to be a dark side character
@CaptainCluck While I do agree. It is hard to feel there are any safer hands than Weta though.
weird next middle earth game not made by WB
