This past Friday saw the arrival of the 1997 PS1 cult classic KLONOA: Door to Phantomile, along with 2001's PS2 game KLONOA 2: Lunatea's Veil, in the form of Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series on Xbox One, Series X and Series S.
They're not just straight ports either, as both games have been remastered for their modern release, and also include Easy, Normal and Hard difficulties, optional tutorials, a 2-player Support Mode and a Challenging Stopwatch Mode
The big question is, is it worth a purchase? Here's what some critics are saying so far:
Pocket Tactics (9/10)
"Klonoa Phantasy Reverie is a superb collection of platform games that shine a light on an iconic character from the genre, one that deserves this moment. Both games are full of fun and intricately designed levels, and not only look stunning, but are warm and welcoming."
EveryEye.It (7.8/10)
"A double remastering of the first two chapters released on PlayStation consoles, perhaps a little too intrusive the one applied on Door to Phantomile, which loses its characteristic 2D pixel art style on 3D modeled backgrounds, but all in all pleasant. Too bad for the lack of care shown for the outline, in particular UI and font of the texts, but it is an excellent birthday present for the 25 years of Klonoa, who after a quarter of a century still proves to be one of the most adorable and iconic from the PlayStation era."
GamersRD (7.5/10)
"Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series is a good opportunity to play again with the characters of our childhood. It's a much-needed remaster but it could have included better things for this generation."
Push Square (7/10)
"Phantasy Reverie Series is a relatively no-frills remaster collection. There's a couple of quality of life improvements and the games have a fresh lick of high definition paint, but if you didn't like Klonoa back in the day then you're not going to like it now. If you didn't play Klonoa at the time then you won't have the prerequisite nostalgia goggles necessary to gaze upon these games and see them for anything more than what they are — a couple of pretty good platformers and little else, and that's fine."
Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series is getting fairly good reviews from most critics, then, with the Metacritic rating likely to sit somewhere around 70-80 when more ratings are added into the mix. Not bad at all!

Glad to see it turned out well. I’ll wait til it’s on a sale since I have a lot to play at the moment plus it’s digital-only here in the States. Looking forward to getting around to it as I’ve never played these games but heard good things!
The remaster of Door to Phantomile is built from the Wii remake.
It's super whack that there's no physical on Xbox. Have been searching on different retailers & it's only on PS amd Switch
@Kilamanjaro The Switch version is also only available in Europe and Asia, digital only in NA.
Just looks a bit meh to me. Not enough action. I like tropical freeze for example where you are constantly in the action
I’ve never played Klonoa before, is this collection worth getting without having any nostalgia for the series?
@JoakimZ if you're a fan of retro style platformers
where normal mode is the original difficulty experience then, yes. they're short but very inticately designed games for its time.
easy mode has farther attack reach and infinite lives.
if not, then no, it will not appeal to you.
@dsar9012 No problem, I said it because it's not mentioned in the article. Let us know how you like the collection if you get it. I'll get it later on.
@JayJ yeah I can pick it up on Switch in Europe but really would like to grow my Xbox collection of Japanese franchises. Hope we can get Persona physical for example.
@Kilamanjaro You can make a group of Japanese digital games on your Xbox dashboard 😊.
@Banjo- not a bad idea, have a ton already so might make a group. Forgot they added the groups to Switch too but I'm mainly on Xbox now.
@Kilamanjaro 😊 I made groups for genres but I also created special groups, e.g. Rare. It's more interesting to browse your games as groups that you arrange as you like than A-Z because some games have inconsistent names: Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode I, Sonic 4 Episode II... then the sequel appears before the first game.
@dsar9012 hey managed to get a physical copy of the game for €40+€4 shipping from Amazon Spain, so there are physical copies randomly somewhere in the world!
@dsar9012 yeah on Xbox. Should arrive next week, can confirm here once it comes in the mail.
