Well, we've been waiting for Sony to finally bring out a competitor to Xbox Game Pass, and it's arrived in some regions today (including the US) in the form of PlayStation Plus Extra and PlayStation Plus Premium.
There are a lot more games included here than were first announced a few weeks ago, including a massive selection of classic titles. We can expect these games to rotate out regularly, just like they do on Xbox Game Pass, but for now this is the initial list that's gone live on PlayStation Plus in the US today.
If you're wondering about prices, the Extra version of PlayStation Plus is comparable to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate at $14.99 per-month, while the Premium version bumps up the price to $17.99 per-month.
Thanks to Push Square, here's the full list of PS Plus Extra / Premium games in the US as of right now:

Did they fix the emulation?
Idk why is this here, but ps plus extra is worse than gamepass. I don't think services are doable. Those 20 something ps4-ps5 games is very telling.
Glad to see it. Brings competition and will probably push Microsoft to make GamePass a better deal than it already is going forward. That might be why they were pushing it so hard in the Showcase.
@DeathByLasagna Absolutely! Having said that, I wish PlayStation's offer was actually much better, as that would certainly push MS to keep improving GamePass. As it stands, MS has very little to worry about...
It has a lot of interesting games which i havent played yet. When it launches in Europe next week ill upgrade my plus to premium for sure. I was going to do extra first until saw they had Legend of heroes Trial in the sky, which i havent played yet. So ill try those for sure.
But not all are downloadable right?
The PS3 stuff being streaming still irks me. If not for that or the lack of Shadow Hearts (for now…) I’d be all over this.
The PS4/5 catalogue is incredible for newcomers nut i already have everything from ps4 onwards, the old games are bare bones as of now
Don't understand the appeal here.
If the plan is to sell new games to the core userbase, who is subscribing to this? I don't see the people who buy a handful of, or cheap games, to be convinced to pay more money for a collection of games currated by someone else.
I think it's more likely that either the core userbase pays twice (very likely given how brand loyal it is) or the core userbase stops buying at launch and does the "I'll wait for it to come to premium".
It's public info that not all legacy games (PS3 and below) run natively on the consoles but do we have a list for the ones that did?
Demon’s Souls alone makes me happy about the new service. I was going to purchase it the day before the line-up was announced, but a voice in my head told me to wait, and I’m glad I did! Saved a few bucks there. RDR2 is nice to have again too.
The new PS+ service looks to be roughly comparable to Gamepass in my eyes. Both services have their big titles, but are both largely for people that aren’t usually purchasing things at release, so I’m sure I’ll do things on a month to month basis when my sub runs out, same as I do for Gamepass nowadays. If not for Elden Ring, I’d not have wanted Demon’s Souls, but now… now, I’ve been hungry for it.
It's not Game Pass, but the "Extra" tier is a pretty amazing list of games! I'm subscribed to both GPU and PS+ Extra, and I'm not sure I'll ever need to buy a game again (outside of 1st party Nintendo, obviously).
@uptownsoul Very true. I think both offerings appeal to different consumers as well. Having said that, GPU can be had for £2.50 a month at the moment with some VPNing...
It's actually a pretty decent list and quite a few heavy hitters on there as well, and anyone new to playstation is in for a treat
@uptownsoul If you go watch a Marvel movie in the cinema, you do not then have that movie to take home with you. And Disney plus has exclusive Marvel shows.
If I bought God of War Ragnorok at launch, I still have that when it hits the sub service.
It's not the exact same approach...
It's a great selection and it's wild to think with both of these services, for basically what amounts to a dollar a day you have access to almost 1000 games at any given time. Going to be a very very long time before I actually purchase another game!
@uptownsoul For sure, and I completely understand the fact that some don't like / know how to do it this way. For me, both subscriptions offer great value if you a) have enough time and b) make use of them. For me, £11 a month wouldn't make sense as whilst I get some use, it's not to that extent. At £2.50 a month, it's the only subscription I pay for
@uptownsoul And Disney plus has exclusive Marvel shows.
We just gonna ignore this part then.
@uptownsoul extra isn’t premium which would be the GPU equivalent. So it’s 120 vs 180. However, MS usually run 3 month deals every black Friday for 25-30 a card so the price is actually the same. People just don’t know that.
https://www.ign.com/articles/3-months-of-xbox-game-pass-ultimate-black-friday?amp=1
@mousieone you buy gold cheap. Stack for three years and pay 99p to upgrade to GPU and it’s works out at £3.40 a month. Anyone paying full price is bonkers. No VPN, no region swapping and not a loop hole - a legit and Microsoft approved way to get GPU cheap. Sony will charge you full price and no mistakes.
I own both and managed to stack now cheap and got upgraded for three years. No way would I pay for either at a tenner a month or whatever it is.
Good selection of games. It is a good service. but to some extent different from Gamepass: Gamepass main premise is the first party day one. Both are great anyway. The only con of PS Plus is stream only PS3 games. However, If I get a PS5 at some point, I will surely subscribe.
I thought the "classic" games would've been a little more... ..classic.
@uptownsoul So those people. Were they trading the cinema and/or physical copies for streaming, or were they double/triple dipping?
@uptownsoul OK, but physical movie sales have plummeted since streaming came about. And cinema releases have no equivalent in video games.
The current hold outs cite quality and continued access as reasons for physical purchase, but quality isn't an issue with downloads.
If Sony commit to having people buy at launch, they diminish the sub's value. Or they'll be wasting a lot of money marketing a game to people who are going to wait for the subscription release.
@uptownsoul Yes, but Game Pass has launch day releases.
Disney bring in most of their money through Cinema releases, not physical releases. Also, I don't remember Disney hanging the quality of their titles on their physical releases.
Sony's model doesn't make sense.
@uptownsoul 3rd party doesn't count. The reason 3rd parties are meant to do well on sub services is because they reach an audience that they otherwise wouldn't have. Marvel is not a 3rd party indie studio. The point is Sony has a massive audience and it want to have its cake and eat it too when it comes to launch day and sub sales.
I fear you are missing the clear point. Physical movie sales have declined because of streaming services. Sony thinks their launch sales won't decline despite a guarantee they will be on a sub service.
The strat that Sony is copying is one of low physical sales. Yet you are arguing as if they will remain high.
I also want to make sure you aren't conflating Cinema releases and physical releases.
The only way that Sony can copy this strat and have both the launch sales and the sub service be highly valuable is if 1) Sony finds an entirely new untapped market to fill the gap, or 2) Sony buyers double dip.
@uptownsoul You're still conflating Cinema releases and physical releases, aren't you?
Cinema release = no equivalent
Blu-ray/dvd physical release = standard game launch
Disney+ = Game Pass/PS+
Cinema launches aren't the same as blu-ray/dvd physical releases, nor the same as streaming releases. Someone who goes to watch at the cinema can still get value out of Disney+ because they no longer have access to the content when it hits the streaming service. Anyone buying physical has no need for streaming and streamers have no need for physical, because having one gives you the same, at home, experience, that you can rewatch. That's why physical sales declined when streaming became a thing.
Trying to compare the at home experience of a video game to the cinema experience, rather than the at home blu-ray is flawed.
I also want to reiterate the difference between Game Pass and PS+.
Game Pass is an alternative. If you buy GP, you don't have to buy Halo, or Gears, or Forza, because you get them at the same time as everybody else. That's $180per year as you say.
PS+ is a supplement service. If you buy PS Extra, you either have to wait like a second class citizen or you buy the game at launch. Which makes that $100 + $70 for every title you don't want to wait for. The only way to make PS extra better value in this case, is to wait for everything and buy no more than 1 PS 1st party title a year.
But you can Sony are expecting everybody to not just pay for the service, but then also maintain the $70 per title, which devalues your sub service.
So, while GP is viable as both a 3rd and 1st party service, PS+ is only good as a 3rd party service.
Your best move, would be to get GP, get all MS and 3rd party games on Xbox and PC, and pay for 1st party titles separately.
Apart from those who like to throw money at Sony, or those that won't purchase the titles, PS+ is a pointless service.
@uptownsoul People don't buy PS+ for the free games, they do it for the online.
Not all games from Sony end up on PS+. The Last Guardian is 5+ years old and, at least to my knowledge, has never been given away. Between not being guaranteed, and inconsistency in releases, relying on PS+ for your games is not viable.
And PS Now only had like 3 million subs. So I mean, if you want PS Extra to have 3 millions, or if we dream big, 5 million, then OK. Great success.
Again, these aren't the same. You keep comparing apples to oranges and expecting the same results.
Some of those games for the PS3 I own digitally but I can't play them unless I subscribe to their top tier service. It doesn't come close to being a GamePass competitor until you can play all the games you already own without paying a fee to do so.
@notoriousmakavel Yep, the main difference is that Game Pass includes Microsoft's games on day one and you can download and buy every game while Sony is a combination of Nintendo Online and a restricted "Game Pass" with some games not available for purchase and download and every first-party game skipping the subscription until they have sold enough physical and digital copies.
Also, something that almost nobody mentions, you don't need Game Pass Ultimate, Ultimate adds PC and Cloud (and EA Play) games but the cheaper standard Game Pass includes all console Game Pass games. At the end of the day, Sony is giving options but none of them are better nor cheaper than Microsoft's. Another very important thing is that Sony, like Nintendo, doesn't acknowledge your previous digital purchases (only PS4-PS5 and not totally) while Microsoft does and even goes the extra mile to include physical purchases from generations ago.
@Chaudy everything's dowloadable - except ps3 titles as they dont have a useable emulator.
The ps4 titles have always been dowloadable, ive been a now member for years and its a great service.
GP is better, Ive been on that for ages too, but its a lot closer than most paint it, especially now it includes ps5 titles. Most of the 3rd party titles come to both services at roughly the same time, and obviously there's a lot of playstation stuff we dont get on xbox.
For anyone on playstation its a great deal and ive been happy with the service for a long time. It doesnt give away quite as much as gamepass, but Sony arent funding it from their own pockets so you wouldnt expect it to.
The value of gamepass is undisputed, but it cant rest on its laurells as the ps service, whikst not quite comparable, is still very good in its own right.
@Banjo- thats not correct.
All games are dowloadable except ps3.
I have also read on pushsquare that owners of ps1 or ps2 titles can download them free on the now service. Ive not done it myself, but the article was very clear:
"To make it even better, if you already own select PS1 and PSP generation games, you'll be able to download them for your PS4 or PS5 for free. This means that you can get the game onto your console without signing up for a subscription."
Its worth pointing out though that this is only for those games that will appear on the service, not all your games.
Classic games have a pretty small slection at present, but I understand those titles will ramp up as the service beds in.
In typical sony style no one seems to have all the answers and coms are thin!
@Titntin thanks very nice overview
@Titntin What? I wrote "some games not available for purchase and download" and you replied "All games are dowloadable except ps3", so what I said is 100% correct.
I skipped the parts that I annoy me the most because they are not directly related to Sony's subscriptions. For instance, the ridiculous and mediocre selection of PS2 games on PS4 before this. The selection of retro games in the Premium service will be better because it would be impossible to be worse. It's obvious that Sony is inspired by Nintendo Online and Game Pass, that's why the article compares the services and, although this is much better than Nintendo Online, which is bare-bones and cheap, none of Sony's tiers is as good value as Game Pass. I expect Sony's loyal fans to subscribe and justify the lack of Sony's games at launch while complaining about 2022's drought on Xbox but this won't be as popular as Game Pass in the short and long term.
As a side note, I was surprised to find out that Sony is planning that over 50% of their games will be on PC and mobile.
@Banjo- technically yes. Buts it only ps3 titles you cant download, and your reply, taken at face value, implied it may be others, so I made that clearer as I thought it might help.
@Titntin Yes, you were more specific in that regard. That doesn't mean that I'm not correct as you said. As I said, I didn't even complain about the things that annoy me the most because it's off-topic. In particular, the PS2 selection on PS4 and that you couldn't get PS3 games on PS4 digitally. I was expecting that when I bought a PS4 but it was my fault for not reading much about Sony's stores first. If I had known, I would have probably bought a PS3 because it has PS3 games and many more retro titles. On topic and for PS3 owners, it's disappointing that they don't have access to the games they own digitally on the new PS3 cloud library.
Yeah, as somebody who does not have a PlayStation newer than the ps3, I find this very appealing. It has a lot of the games that I picked up on my own outside of game pass on Xbox, and has a lot of stuff that I would want to play. .
My feeling is that this is really good because it means competition for Microsoft and the need to make their offering even more compelling.
What if this is streamable from a pc?
@Banjo- I understand. Im easier to please, im intrested in current titles only on my current consoles. So whilst its a novelty for sure to have this on ps5, im unlikely to use it. In the same way I never use it on my series X. I archive everything together with emulatirs for pc - I have everything released for just about anything thats been capable of playing a game, up to ps3 era.
I only play newer titles on my consoles, so Sonys offering, alongside gamepass, suit me well. I hope they improve the selection of classics over time so it will service people with your wants better...
... and I cant help but offer another correction, sorry. PS plus is already the largest sub service in the world by a considerable margin. It was 49 million subscribers last I heard vs 18 million on gp. I love gp too, buts it not even close if paying memberships is your metric. I believe it will remain more popular than gp, partially because of playstations bigger install base.
@Titntin I prefer to play on consoles, that's why I think that Microsoft's approach is the best, free backwards compatibility. Xbox is the sweet spot between new and retro. Besides, you need a dedicated gaming PC to run games from the last generations flawlessly. I tried to play some Switch games on my new laptop just to map the buttons and use the Xbox controller and even Link's Awakening remake is very choppy.
"PS plus is already the largest sub service in the world by a considerable margin"
Most people buy Plus to play online so the comparison should be between Game Pass and PlayStation Plus Extra/Premium. That's the correct metric and not Plus vs. Game Pass or Game Pass Ultimate.
@Banjo- im an ex dev mate. I run 10900k 3090 based pc. It can and does run everything, so if i fancy an old dreamcast schumup, its in 4k at 120fps, with infinately more options to adjust performance to my needs than any console.
MS did a good job with backwards compat, though ive always joked they had to, as they had no new titles! Whatever the reason they done it good, so if you buy new consoles to play old games MS does it better.
As for metrics i guess we can see once this roll out is in and has been around a while.. Its only launched, and not even in my territory yet 😁
@Titntin Actually, I didn't use any metrics, you did comparing Plus, the old standard subscription similar to Gold, vs. Game Pass/Game Pass Ultimate. What I said is "this won't be as popular as Game Pass in the short and long term". Not metrics comparing a new service vs. Game Pass but just a prediction that might be wrong like any prediction.
@Banjo- erm, ok. I dont know what we are disagreeing about now, but i hear your prediction and your probably right. Have a great day.
Ha ha, okay. Have a great day you too.
@somnambulance Same here! I was going to buy Demon's Souls. For me, this game alone is worth the ticket.
