Activision has dropped the official gameplay reveal trailer for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, along with detailing the game's release and what editions will be available. Unlike the last two years — where standalone last-gen versions were $60 — the base game is now $70, featuring access across both console generations.
The base Xbox version — now live on the Xbox website — contains Modern Warfare 2 itself, along with access to the upcoming open beta, which will last for at least two days. There's no official word yet on a beta start date or if there'll be any PlayStation exclusivity on that front, but it certainly seems the latter will be the case.
There's also a 'Vault Edition' which contains the same cross-gen game along with a load of cosmetic bundles for MW2, and bits and pieces for Warzone and Modern Warfare 2019. There are 10 weapon blueprints, 12 operator skins and more besides, which does seem a bit more generous than previous bonus content packs for Call of Duty.
But yeah, digitally at least, the big takeaway here is that there's no standalone Xbox One version to be seen. Both Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard could be bought purely on Xbox One at a cheaper price, meaning this new $70 entry point is a bit of bummer for last-gen players who are forced to pay for "cross-gen" access.

Honestly, I expect third-party games to cost $70 for current gen games. Once Sony set the precedent, I knew others would follow. This may change for Activision since they're going to be MS, but others will charge more whenever possible.
It's probably going to be the last COD we ever have to buy.
Might try it on gamepass, but never paying for a CoD again... the recent games have been horrible to play in multiplayer (getting killed within about 2 seconds of spawning)... just haven't felt fun at all.
Loved Blops 1 and 2 and MW 1 and 2... But, for me, it's been mostly downhill since.
A shame, as I spent many happy hours on CoD in the 360 era.
I don't respond well to this whole "only get cross gen bundles" thing, maybe I've been spoilt by smart delivery but it forces me to wait until a sale.
Eh, hope it comes to GamePass. Otherwise I’ll just wait for it to go down to $50 or under. That aside, the game trailer seemed alright. Hoping the campaign is fun and they bring back a few maps from the original MW2.
@IronMan30 Activision and 2K were the 2 companies that said right after Sony's showing that they were moving up to $70 in Sept 2020. This was already a planned thing, probably in collusion with Sony back 2+ years ago that was already publicly announced years ago.
It'll be interesting to see what happens, though with MS buying them out. This was already in the pipeline and probably agreed on back door with the whole PS advertising rights thing.
To date, the only 2 companies I'm aware of that committed to the pricing, happen to be 2 companies that have marketing rights held by PS (Acti with CoD and 2K with GTA.) Even Ubi, to date, has not committed to pricing. I don't think EA has, either.
Gamepass. That’s it. That’s the comment.
With prices like this waiting for a sale becomes mandatory. Heck with the Microsoft deal in mind I doubt I will ever buy another COD title as I imagine they will be coming to GamePass before long.
@k3lt0n that’s a terrible reply. I don’t buy that many terrible A games to warrant a monthly subscription. I doubt most consumers do. The better answer is wait for the winter sale and pick it up for 50% off.
Is that because of smart delivery
I was really enjoying the MW1 campaign… but I never completed it. Never have I ever experienced such contempt towards me from a publisher for giving them money with the expectation to be able to play what I paid for. Every time they updated warzone (which was often and regular) they always deleted the campaign…asking me to redownload it each time… a long with texture packs? Crazy.
£70 for that experience again? No thanks.
Considering they’re asking £70 it will be really interesting to see if they lock off any modes for any platforms this time round - spec ops being a complete mode exclusive to PlayStation for a year last time.
It’s also annoying that $70 translates into £70 for some reason. I don’t even want to think about what Canadians and Australians have to pay for this kind of nonsense …especially if content still gets deleted or locked away.
Sooner this franchise is in MS hands the better…assuming they can even get the game out once they own it.
@Elthesensai I get it for free, so no skin off my back.
Smart delivery giveth and smart delivery taketh.
I rather wait for a 50%+ discount or more news on the microsoft-activision deal
@NEStalgia Ubisoft said something along the lines of "launch games will cost $60" to imply that could change. Don't be surprised when more publishers follow suit and games cost $70.
And I would be very surprised if EA wasn't among the first. Then again, they do love their microtransactions, so they might not feel like they have to...
So it does have a base console game it's just making people with said console pay more
@IronMan30 Ubi was hedging and waiting until after 2020 to decide, and didn't change it in 2021. They may change it in the future, and left the door open, but Ubi in particular has an interesting dynamic. The way they do their DLC's they highly encourage spending $100, not $70 at launch with their gold editions. If they change their base pricing, it could ruin a good thing.
CoD can get away with it, but I do wonder how long $70 will last. Some will argue with inflation now it looks justified. On the other hand sales of discretionary items are plummeting and consumer spending is swinging wildly. I'm not sure a price increase on games while Target is moving to liquidate a lot of electronics, clothing, and furniture it couldn't sell because everyone dropped to buying groceries, and switched to store brand at that is a good time to raise the price on discretionary goods. Gaming is banking on being "recession-proof" again. But where $59.99 can feel like a good value, once you see $69.99, that starts looking more like a big spend you stop and think about.
It's CoD, it'll be fine. But I don't think $70 is going to fly across the industry, and if they try it, I think they're going to get a surprise.
I'll just buy it second hand in a couple of years' time for a fiver.
@Bleachedsmiles Yeah we're getting robbed clean in Canada,it's prolly gonna be somewhere around 100 CAD for the base game wich I'll pe paying when pigs fly and hell freezes over.
This better be on gamepass or i won't even bother with it even though I enjoyed the original MW2 back in the day.
@dsar9012 If you want it, you have to buy it. Or wait until the following year when it'll probably get added to gamepass. If you don't want it you don't have to buy it. If you don't like it you don't have to read a month old article on it.
