343 Industries has confirmed it's looking at a way to implement microtransactions in Halo: The Master Chief Collection, although it's been explained that it's an "optional, additive alternative" to grinding for "the vast scope of content".
In the latest blogpost over at Halo Waypoint, 343 further detailed the reasons behind the idea:
"For players who are new to the MCC, or who may not have dedicated much time specifically to unlocking items during the seasonal updates, or are simply completionists looking to catch the last outstanding items they need, we are internally exploring a potential new feature for the future in the form of purchasable Spartan Points."
"It is prudent to note here that we are happy with the current system of how players earn Spartan Points, by completing challenges and levelling up through play. This would be an optional, additive alternative for players who might find the vast scope of content to be an intimidating amount of playtime and want to get ahead on (or skip) the grind, or maybe want to grab specific items they want (we all have our favorites!)."
These Spartan Points will be the new name for Season Points, and it's also mentioned in the blogpost that the MTX plans are being shared early "in the interest of transparency with our dedicated and passionate community".
343 has yet to reveal a date for these changes, but we'll let you know when we hear more.

Well we all know that all the ‘interest in transparency’ in the world won’t have them forthcoming about how much additional grinding they’ll add to the grinding. That ‘breaking news’ story will inevitably come within days of them introducing these micro transactions.
Instead of worrying about how halo master chief collection doesn’t have microtransactions I wish they’d worry about how halo infinite is still an incomplete game 7 months since it released. Imagine if you’re one of the players who didn’t get it via gamepass… crazy
@Bleachedsmiles Agreed. I can't understand why it isn't all hands on deck for Infinite. Stop trying to milk the old games and ensure that people will give a care for the new ones. Saw that rumor that the first story DLC for Infinite will take 3 years to come out. This team needs to get their heads out of their rears soon or the only Halo games anyone will care about will be the on the MCC.
As long as they don't have any 'impact' on the gaming experience for others and are purely optional 'cosmetics', I don't see any issue - unless ALL cosmetics are relegated to MTX and no longer used as a reward (or devalue the Reward by selling them).
I have no issue with a Dev making a 'set' of Cosmetic Rewards for a specific 'Season' for people to 'earn' and then a few seasons later, offer these as 'purchasable' for those that 'missed' or didn't complete the required challenges in time. As long as its 'cosmetics' and not things that have an impact on game-play, I see no issue.
XP boosts affect game-play and give those with it an 'advantage' as they unlock levels and upgrades at a faster rate. Of course some cosmetics could give players an advantage if it helps them be more difficult to see...
It’s not like these games and this collection have already made plenty of money.
Let’s shoe horn in MTX. Lovely.
Ha.
Terrible stuff.
Also funny how these days devs are proud to say their games include “a grind”…..
All a bit bizarre this. I expect better from Xbox tbh
It's funny that this decision seems to have come after they said they'd mostly moved over to focus on Halo Infinite, after HI released, and after HI tanked.
It's almost as if they said "we aren't making the MTX money we were expecting, where can we cover some of those costs?" and decided to shoehorn them in MCC, 8 years after the game launched.
Let's be honest here, all the big content releases for MCC have happened, and for free. These MTXs will either go straight to an executive's pocket, or on the addition of more useless cosmetics.
You've seen how cosmetics affects actual content with Halo Infinite. The cosmetics become the priority because that's the content that makes money. Between HI and MCC and over 8 years, they've released less maps than Halo 3 saw in the first 6 months. There's zero chance this new "optional, additional alternative" goes towards funding anything exciting.
The future of Xbox looks increasingly ugly, seems to be the case of everything you loved about Xbox is being killed off.
This is why they launched it as free to play and separate. At least we have MCC.
Of course they are.
343 realizes that Infinite is sinking and people are moving to Master Chief Collection. So of course they have to go and muck it up with microtransactions.
I hope they don't increase the grind for those that enjoy unlocking things through gameplay. I'm super happy with the state of the MCC it's so much fun to jump between those games.
If they were really only interested in letting players 'skip the grind' I'm sure they could do it without charging them lol
Can't they leave MCC alone and just focus on improving Infinite? This is just a way to keep milking the fanbase dry, MS are just as guilty as they sign off on this.
Absolute horse manure this is, why not concentrate on SP content for Halo Infinite and release Forge. Terrible decision.
Wait for it. Shock fking horror.
This was always gonna happen. Its the modern world of gaming. Money first, good games last. Cancer.
@WallyWest of course not. Gaming is all about £££££ now. Never mind the gamers
@Would_you_kindly no chance nothing is free these days
@Grumblevolcano thats the future of gaming not just Xbox.
