It's been another exciting week in the world of video games, and one surprise on the Xbox front was Square Enix's announcement of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion.
This game is a remaster of the 2007 PlayStation Portable title, and is a prequel to FFVII. It sees the return of Zack Fair - an important character, whose own story weaves the fates of characters like Cloud, Aerith, Tifa and Sephiroth. Ahead of the release "this winter", Square Enix has shared some screenshots, so we've rounded them up here into a single post:
Are you excited for this upcoming release? Tell us in the comments below.

I'm very excited about this game. It looks amazing for a remaster, the combat also looks like action which I prefer over other combat. So yeah this will almost certainly be a day 1 for me
I don't care what anyone says, if this FFVII game (which is a prequel) is coming to Xbox, then so will Intergrade and the others. We just gotta play the best waiting game of our lives!
I remember when it came out and everyone was losing their heads over it.
Nice to see it is getting some love. Since it is a prequel to 7, wouldn't surprise me to see the 7 remake follow some time after.
@UnusedBabyWipes My issue with "waiting" is that Sony may have locked up the FF7R games permanently without our knowledge. Hence, if Xbox owners support Crisis Core, we may be buying a "piece" of a story that will never be completed on Xbox.
At the same time, if Crisis Core doesn't sell on Xbox, Square Enix will take that as "Japanese games don't sell well on Xbox", which gives them less of an incentive to give us Intergrade and Rebirth.
@LOGICWINS well crisis core seems to be a remaster of a game which ties in to the OG Ff7, which is avaliable on Xbox. I just finished the og ff7 and that's partially why I get so excited about this game. That's why I will certainly buy this game one Xbox because that way I'm showing these type games belong on Xbox as well.
This is looking real good! I’m excited to play it for the first time.
@Kaloudz From what I understood, ff7r is a combination between a remake and a sequel. They expect you to have played the og ff7 to understand all subtleties from the remake. At least that's the info I get from reading other people's comments. Haven't played it myself yet, wil do 7r after crisis core.
The story of OG 7 was very good. The game feels old in a lot of ways but since the story was so good it didn't bother me at all. I only beat Sephiroth and understood all the weapons were optional so didn't do them.
This game is my beloved treasure, the jewel of my collection.
The UMD is still standing proudly on my shelf, and the game is still on the main screen of my PSVITA system (I hacked the little beast just to be able to play this masterpiece on it, since it was never released to the PS store).
It's a masterpiece. Yeah, I know I just said it, but it truly is. The gameplay is... I don't know... weird ? Yeah, it's a little weird.
But the story, man. Those characters. For a Final Fantasy VII fan like me, the game was pure revelation. Gospel and all. It's so moving. And you just want to replay FFVII, after that. You want the story to follow its own flow.
Yeah, day one. DAY ONE !! (and we need to show Square that we love this licence on Xbox, too !)
@Lavalera You just finished the original FFVII ?
You're in for something huge, hurtfull, and very moving, by playing Crisis Core next. I'm sure you'll love it !
@Bobobiwan yeah I know I'm about 25 years late to the party but it was my first ever playthrough. Since I wanted to play 7r I decided to play the original one first, since I got that advise from several people. Glad I played it, even now it's still a good game. Good to hear I'm going to enjoy Crisis core, from what I've seen I'm sure I'm going to like it. After that I'll play the remake, I already own that one on my ps5, but yeah it would be awesome for people with only an Xbox if it would come over there as well. I prefer having the choice where to play it. Crisis core Soul Hackers 2 and the Persona games I'm all going to buy on Xbox to show I also want those Japanese games over on Xbox as well and if enough people will do that we migjt get more Japanese games over.
@Kaloudz I'm generally not a big fan of mobile games they tend to be full of micro transactions, but if this one isn't then I might play it, I'll wait and see
@Lavalera that's exactly what it is, most of the story beats are exactly the same, but things to get changed up in certain segments. Notibly the last chapter. OG is amazing and the remake is also very good.
@Lavalera @Kaloudz Yep, I love having the choice to play Japanese games on Xbox and I support the ones I like: Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Project Zero, Tales of, Persona... so more come.
I'm not sure if I should play original VII after or before Crisis Core. I played the original on Windows (as a kid) but don't remember much except for the wonderful soundtrack and intriguing story.
@LOGICWINS SE has a lot of their games on the xbox.
I think they already have their answer if they have an audience there or not. Alot of their stuff is even on gamepass. They do yearly rotations with everything as well.
Hardly a case, at all, if they see if their stuff sells well - it clearly does or they wouldn't bother.
@Banjo- from what I've read crisis core spoils some stuff in the og ff7. So normally people recommend to play crisis core after ff7. Since you already played it it's a toughie. Then it kinda depends on if you think you'll remember the story of 7 while playing crisis core first. But the safest bet would always be to play 7 first and crisis core after.
@Nalverus That's right, Square Enix have already made their mind up, it's worth having games on Xbox. People that say it's not worth it are usually PS fans that think that PS5 is the only gaming platform.
@Lavalera I'll do that.
@Kaloudz Sometimes I like collecting 100% in games but I don't think that it will be the case. In platformers, that makes them more fun. I had someone beating the Chocobo race for me in Final Fantasy X/X-II 😅. I think I got pretty much everything else except those ridiculous optional battles. I'll be happy playing the story in FFVII and whatever I bump into.
@Kaloudz If it's not entertaining but a chore, why bother? I find it worse in some RPGs because you're supposed to level up for hundreds of hours just to beat overpowered bosses. That doesn't make sense to me.
