Xbox delivered the kind of megaton announcement we're not so fond of recently, when it delayed Starfield into 2023. Despite that unfortunate news, it seems the game is coming along nicely, at least according to studio head Todd Howard.
Multiple Xbox execs and devs recently spoke about the company's upcoming plans ahead of the big summer showcase this weekend. Todd Howard chimed in, saying "We are putting the finishing touches on Starfield, which is an incredible opportunity for us".
That's music to our ears, especially with the delay into 2023. It should mean that, ultimately, Starfield is getting the polish time it needs to deliver a smoother launch than recent Bethesda Game Studios releases. Xbox Boss Phil Spencer seems pretty stoked about its release too:
"Starfield for me is a unique opportunity. Todd Howard has been a friend for an awful long time, and the fact that Bethesda Game Studios is working on a new IP, which has been a long time [coming]... This will be a hallmark for us – in terms of the acquisition of ZeniMax, getting to work with Todd, and bringing this game to market."
We should have a clearer idea of how far along the game really is at Sunday's Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase. The fun starts June 12th at 10am PT / 1pm EST / 6pm BST.

That's a lot of polish time.
Actually makes me a bit hopeful.
My body is ready.
Sometimes I feel like I’m in the matrix and it’s glitching. I’m pretty sure Tod Howard said this to ign at the start of the year…basically the rest of this year was just polish. And we all went “wow it’s gonna be so polished by November”
Now he’s saying it again…and we’re going “wow it’s gonna be so polished next year”
Then when it finally comes out November 2024 the first article after ‘it’s on gamepass!’ Will be how it’s broken. I’ve seen this plot twist before.
I still expect Starfield to be a little buggy, like Elder Scrolls and Fallout series have always been. I don't think it is wise to expect a flawlessly polished game from Bethesda.
I'm not putting those series down, Elders Scrolls is my favorite series. I'm just saying expect the usual quirky bugs here and there.
Imagine the typical Skyrim bug where you drop an item and it rattles around the entire room then imagine it in a space game with gravity physics.
Just let me skip the run around of using a free month of gamepass and just make it free on the store at launch
I'm glad they delayed the game, Don't want another Cyberpunk situation..
He just needs one more year to make sure the collision detection definitely works no more than 10% of the time.
Surprise, it’s actually releasing in 2022! We fooled you!
If only…
He needs to shut up and just make the game he already said all this crap a year ago.
Anyone who still believes anything Tom says deserves all they get!
The man is proven bare faced liar. I certainly would not buy a thing from him unless its been tested within an inch of its life.
I still hope the devs will make something exceptional despite their poor leadership, but their recent track record would suggest im playing some pretty long odds......
Bethesda games are usually glitchy at launch but they said that it won't be the case under Microsoft's umbrella. Here's hope.
@NEStalgia They need a year to get ladder climbing into their engine 😁 For some unknown reason they have never managed to make it work.! Staggering for team of this size and with their history...
@Titntin Sliding sideways off the ladder over and over mid-climb is how it's supposed to work. It makes it more realistic if you're trying to climb a ladder in those shoes
I still wonder if this was moved because of Avowed (or some other Surprise) and also wanted to ensure that the game doesn't repeat Fallout 76/Cyberpunk 2077. Maybe it will also benefit from not releasing in the busiest period with Hogwarts, CoD etc too...
Nice to know they are going to spend significant time polishing this game. I am thinking February or May 2023.
I've no doubt this game would've released weather it was finished or not if it was purely up to todd Howard
