We've been talking about the former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé on Pure Xbox quite a lot recently as he does the rounds to promote his new book, and he brought up the topic of Xbox again in a recent G4 interview.
Reggie was asked during the discussion what his favourite non-Nintendo game was, and without any hesitation whatsoever, he replied that it was Halo. In fact, he owned an Xbox before he ever owned a Nintendo GameCube:
"The original Xbox was in my living room before I had a GameCube. I wasn't an employee of Nintendo, I was on my own videogame journey. My kids were pushing me, 'we've gotta get an Xbox, we've gotta play this game Halo'. And they would end up kicking my ass."
"It's not that I'm good at it, but I really enjoy that game."
Last week, Reggie also praised Xbox for the "fantastic" acquisition of Activision Blizzard, and Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer took to Twitter to endorse and congratulate the ex-Nintendo boss on his new book, "Disrupting The Game".

It's a great pick for sure! I generally lean towards Playstation as my favorite platform but no matter what I always make sure I find a way to play Halo whenever a new one comes around. In fact I was playing Infinite Season 2 just yesterday and unsurprisingly had a blast!
@Royalblues I am actually a bit glad i didnt play the games until 2018, since I was able to binge play through 1-5 including Reach and ODST.
The cliffhanger endings on these games are brutal and I would had been devastated had I actually needed to wait years to see what happened after the ending of Halo 2!!!
@Tharsman You didn't experience the Halo 2 cliffhanger like we did... I'm... So happy for you...
Are your sure your body is ready for it?
Sorry, but even to this day I cannot for the life of me see what's so special about Halo. It's a good game, sure, and I can understand the wider impact it had on the genre, but I had far too many issues with it to say it was a classic.
@Royalblues Visually, 4 blew my mind. Story wise, I also liked it. Hell, I also liked 5 quite a bit.
These games introduced a new enemy, and new weapon types to the series that was up to that point starting to feel stale. I loved those super tech morphing weapons.
@RedSabat Yea I saw that ending and I was "omg... people actually had to wait 3 years to see what happened next?!?!
Mind you, I found the ending of Halo 5 to be similarly cliffhanger, with doom painted all over... and it just all gets cleared off screen between games... /disappointed
@TimG13 same.
I'm playing Infinite at the moment, and while definitely more fun than the older games, it's just nothing special.
Hell, I played the old ones via MCC and came away incredibly disappointed and bored.
They're just such simple games with basic level design, and I personally don't find anything special in the setting or lore, which to me look and sound super generic and uninteresting.
@clvr The funny thing is, despite also having several problems with it, I quite enjoyed Infinite, enough to persuade me to revisit the older games via MCC earlier in the year to see if my opinion of them would change. It didn't.
I don't know. The magic of Halo is simply lost on me. I just don't get it, particularly the praise heaped on the original. As mentioned above, I can appreciate the impact it had (mechanically it was top-notch), but for me, I couldn't overlook how repetitive it was. Pretty much every level has its own corridor copy and pasted throughout (epitomised perfectly by The Library, although Truth And Reconciliation gives it a good run for its money) and to add insult to injury, the last half of the game is essentially the first half in reverse
On launch, reviews were raving about the wide open sandboxes in the likes of The Silent Cartographer and Assault On The Control Room, and, at the time, they were impressive, but also few and far between. Honestly, to me the game is predominantly endless repetitive corridors, something many of Infinite's campaign missions are also guilty of.
It wasn't just that. The Covenant weapons weren't as satisfying to use, the Flood weren't fun to fight, and Bungie's alien design leaves a lot to be desired (admittedly that last one's very subjective). That said, I still liked the game, and I still like Halo as a franchise. I just don't think it's as good as it's made out to be.
@TimG13 exactly. I can definitely appreciate the impact the original might have had at the time, but I was kinda shocked by how the formula didn't seem to change or evolve that much with subsequent entries.
Fortunately Infinite seems to shake it up a bit so far, I'll see how long it keeps me interested.
@clvr If you haven't already, I'd recommend having a crack at ODST. It's my personal favourite of the bunch, largely because it has a completely different vibe to the mainline games, and more engaging characters and plot (which admittedly isn't saying much).
@TimG13 thanks! Actually that's the only one I haven't tried, along with 5, so maybe I'll reinstall the MCC and try it out 😃 have a good one mate!
