Embracer Group's acquisition of Square Enix's western studios is the latest merger to be underway in gaming. But, what will come of the purchase for fans of Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief and more? Quite a lot, if the plans outlined here come to fruition.
In Embracer's latest earnings report, the company touched on its acquisition and what players can expect from some of the IP it has picked up. Future plans won't just revolve around sequels, says Embracer.
After the end of the quarter, we further strengthened our development capabilities and IP-portfolio by entering into an agreement to acquire Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix Montreal, including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief and Legacy of Kain and other IPs. The announcement got an overwhelming and positive response. We see a great potential, not only in sequels, but also in remakes, remasters, spinoffs as well as transmedia projects across the Group. We expect the transaction to close in the July-September period.
So, we could see some legacy games from these newly acquired series' brought back, which would be welcomed by us! Don't get us wrong, we do want to see fresh sequels and new IP, but classic Tomb Raider, Deus Ex and Thief games modernised? Count us in!
We don't know about specific plans just yet, but expect some of these projects to be a ways off. The transaction itself won't conclude until at least July, before the new owner can begin to dictate what comes from these newly acquired studios.
What Square Enix remake would you like to see most? Let us know in the comments!

A new Deus Ex, or even a remake of the original would be fantastic
I loved the new Tomb Raider trilogy. As long aa they hols to that level of quality I'm in.
That’s what they do. They even brought back Sponge Bob. They also tend to do a lot of crazy collectors editions at launch, so that might be something for some fans to look forward to. I can see myself getting a fancy Deus Ex edition.
They also, so far I think, don’t delve into the micro transaction nonsense Square has been delving into, so things might be relatively in safe hands.
Definitely coming to the conclusion from a business profile point, that remakes etc requiring less investment or even outsourced are being used to bring cash flow into the business to bridge the gap for when a new game is released.
Financially these studio owners would have worked this out, and it’s seems to becoming a financial trend that probably works for them.
Remember it’s a business that they need to be viable and to survive and that has bills to pay.
Can’t see the remake/remaster trend leaving us anytime soon, in fact it seems to be growing this year and probably into next.
@Retrokingdan ive been wanting a remake of the OG 2000 GOTY verrsion of Deus Ex easily one of my fav games ever...
@Retrokingdan @Blessed_Koz Same, same. A console port is all I ask for. See profile pic 😂
A new Deus Ex game would be fantastic
They acquired a lot of great IP’s. Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, Legacy of Kain…. Getting sequels, remakes, and more is no surprise. It would be a surprise if they spent all that money and didn’t give us anything. Looking forward to what they decide to give us.
@Dezzy70 "Remember it's a business". They always have been, but they never used to stuff everything with micro-transactions and make lazy remasters. Stop defending greed.
yay! said no one. ugh, i wish Microsoft had bought them lol
@Thumper
I’m not defending it, I want new games for my new generation console.
I was telling it for why it is what it is and why they do it. I do. It like it at all. I’m a new game man.
nah i had enough of remakes, would rather see something new
A sequel to Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, please.
Embracer Group, you now own Gex. Bring him back!
BRING. BACK. GEX!!
The world needs more immersive sims, this is great news
Oh yeah they even mention Legacy of Kain!
Deus Ex 1 Remake
New Deus Ex
Thief 1-3 Remaster Collection
New Thief
This is my dream ✨️
Hi, I would love to replay the original Deus Ex & Thief games on Xbox! Sequels of these games would also be v.kool 😺🎮🚀
@Grail_Quest Yes, bring back Gex. I really enjoyed both Enter the Gecko and Deep Cover Gecko on the N64.. They only got average review scores but both titles had a good 20-25 hours of play each from me.... Great games 👍
Deus Ex is the greatest video game ever created, and it isn't even on Xbox. I'm sure bringing it to console could be a smaller project like Bethesda did with Quake.
Give me a Legacy of Kain HD collection and I'll be happy
