The Elden Ring success stories just keep on coming. Earlier this week, we learnt that by the end of March 2022 the game had shipped 13 million copies. As it turns out, by the end of April 2022 it had managed to outsell the biggest name in gaming.
That's right, in just two months on the market, Elden Ring has outsold Call of Duty: Vanguard. Vanguard launched late last year, and has been on store shelves a good three months longer than FromSoftware's latest epic.
This is absolutely huge for the developer, and publisher Bandai Namco will no-doubt be quite pleased as well. These numbers are for the US market including both physical and digital sales, and here's the full top 10 seller list for the last 12 months (bottom image):
There you have it, Elden Ring sitting pretty at number one. As for Call of Duty, we can't remember the last time something actually managed to outsell the juggernaut franchise. Activision will be eager to move back to one of its more-popular subseries' later this year, when Modern Warfare II releases.
Did you expect Elden Ring to be this popular? Let us know below.

Well I bought it in the first week, so that's saying something, most of the time more of a 'wait for a sale person'. But yeah buddies around me created too much FOMO, and totally not a souls games kinda player, but this game I still play every week after months, so yeah understand the sales numbers.... it's awesome, and now also game of the year , there's no competition left.
Fantastic news. As a long time FromSoft fan (going back to Kings Field and Armoured Core) I'm thrilled for the team and everything they have built over the years.
Moreover this is clear evidence that gamers don't just want the same old homogenised games and want to be challenged both in difficulty, but more so in the general interaction with a virtual world. Many of us don't like to be led by the hand, or by quest marker, and prefer to use our brains to explore a world intuitively!
Anyone else seeing snow? Because I think hell just froze over.
Seriously though, Elden Ring is my personal GOTY and the only game in the Microsoft ecosystem that I've ever 100% the achievements on, so I'm glad to see that it is performing this well.
@Kezelpaso Didn't GTA V out sell CoD Ghost back in 2013??
Well there's a headline I never thought I'd see. Imagine! A FromSoft game outselling CoD. Unbelievable really.
I figured it'd sell well. It's a multiplat that has a lot of great reviews.
@Tasuki Possibly, but that's almost a decade ago!
@Kezelpaso Yeah I believe I somewhere that the only time CoD gets out sold is when Rockstar brings out a new game. I don't remember if that happened with RDR2 but I could have sworn it did when GTAV came out. How time flies.
I bought it twice, for each console, something I've never done before, and I still don't really know why I did it in the first place! Very close to finishing it on the XBox, and fully prepared for a second playthrough on PS5 (maybe with a palette cleanser between!)
From Demons Souls to this. What an arc for Miyazaki and the team! Congratulations!
Easily the GOTY. Nothing else has come close (that I’ve played, anyway)
@PapaGlitch I’ve done the same thing with most of the Souls games. I think I may have purchased DS2 4 times
This is a huge achievement…for what’s comparatively still a niche game, and a new ip at that, to out sell a franchise with so much weight behind it MS figured it worth tens of billions…this is pretty crazy news. Hopefully most of the money made will get put back into fromsoftware…this time last year I would have said fromsoftware were a prime candidate to be snapped up by a Sony or MS…now it sounds like they’re sitting pretty. Look forward to what they bring out next.
I'm actually surprised Lego star wars did so well. Even outselling Pokémon arceus.
About the elden ring I don't know what to think about it since it's not my type of game. But for the fans it is good news I guess. I'm just afraid we will get a lot of bad copy paste games now that want to get the same type of succes
Eh, it's an anomaly and definitely FOMO-driven. I know plenty of people who bought it and I can tell they hate it but don't want to go against all the 11/10 GOAT reviews, lol.
😂 COD Vanguard is crap, and has hardly sold at all. I'd hardly be shouting about this as unbelievable sales.
Praise be to FromSoft.
