We've been waiting for news on the next Tomb Raider for a while now, and we've finally got it as part of today's Unreal Engine 5 stream, with the reveal that Crystal Dynamics has started work on the next entry in the series.
According to Franchise General Manager Dallas Dickinson, the goal with the next Tomb Raider is to "push the envelope of fidelity, and to deliver the high-quality, cinematic action-adventure experience that fans deserve from both Crystal Dynamics, and the Tomb Raider franchise."
There are no screenshots or trailers to take a look at yet, as Crystal Dynamics says it's "just started development" on the game, but we're just glad to get the confirmation. It's been four years since Lara Croft last graced our screens in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, so we're more than ready for her next adventure at this point. It's going to be a tough wait!
Excited for the next Tomb Raider? Let us know down in the comments section below.

The tech demo of unreal engine 5 looked a lot like a tomb raider game, maybe it was it after all.
Yesssssss! Loved the reboots.
Also thought Microsoft should have purchased Crystal Dynamics, they would have been a good fit for Tomb Raider, third person action adventure for xbox exclusives. They have a lot of experience in that type of game which we lack on xbox.
The sort of story telling big AAA adventures are still very popular, probably the main one being Zelda BOTW.
Nice, now I need to play/finish the ones from 2013 on. I actually like the first one in that Trilogy quite a bit.
@Dezzy70 what difference would it make? The franchise is on Xbox already...
@Dezzy70 I thought Microsoft should have purchased them as well. Maybe that’s something they are still considering. I don’t know if the Tomb Raider IP would carry over with the purchase though. Don’t quote me but I thought Square Enix own that now? Even if they did, there’s still plenty of IP’s CD could chose from or create an original IP.
I could never get into these games. I absolutely dread its quick time events.
Crystal Dynamics needs to revive Gex and Pandemonium!
@munstahunta I had thought the same thing. I thought they were specifically showing off the new Tomb Raider when they did that demo with things like ray traced audio and the individual bouncing rocks.
Whoop whoop! Loved the previous three
@Rural-Bandit
Off subject.
Amazing 12 days and counting since the UK last saw a genuine PS5 for sale, I think is a record.
Also the USA struggling with supply as well.
Hope Sony sort this out they starting to languish in sales in the USA and Europe now weekly.
So many great games now and so little consoles available. If this continues much longer could end up a very slow selling console and game uptake for them. Also the competition seem to be getting consoles to shops etc.
I hope they haven’t gone down some supplier issue argument, they did that once before in the 80s with one of their Sony Walkman suppler of parts and let the others pinch the market for nearly 6 months, JVC, Panasonic and the others had a bonus few months when that happened selling their versions.
@deadmaker
True, but I meant more for other future projects
For Xbox in the sort of third person action adventure type game.
Awesome, I absolutely love these games
Really enjoyed Shadow of the tomb raider
Released 2018, so about time we had a new one.
Would love a Christmas 2022 release.
Xbox Series X|S Best-Selling Console in the UK in March, Switch in 2nd and PS5 in 3rd - Sales
Surprise even beat the mighty Switch.
@Dezzy70 I agree they are talented for this kind of game, but I imagine purchasing them implies on getting their IPs, which I don't see as a positive thing.
Microsoft could always make a deal with them to create a new exclusive IP if that's the case.
@deadmaker
They could do that.
CD probably to busy now with helping with perfect dark and now a new tomb raider.
They only have about 300 - 400 hundred employees.
And the time it is taking to make big AAA games currently, I think they need all the staff they can get on those two projects for now.
@EvilSilentFrame Well they purchase Square Enix as well. Problem solved 👍
Hopefully it'll be more tomb filled and less guns o' blazing like the last few.
Tombraider nice and all, but finish Perfect Dark first please, and make it a good game, well this news will up the price for CD ofcourse , but maybe the deal to sell CD to Microsoft has already been done behind the curtains.
Hopefully it's a linear globe trotting adventure rather than some kinda open world toss
That is a good news i wasn't expected a new tomb raider release since crystal dynamic made it clear it was their last so that announcement at unreal engine 5 showcase hitted like a stsunami. xD
Excellent - the last TR game was superb - definitely up for some more!
I love me some Tomb Raider! Recently re-watched the first Angelina Jolie movie and it remains a stone cold classic (and some of Daniel Craig's finest abs, I mean work.) I would love to see them leave all the problematic cultural stuff behind and just go full-on sci fi for this latest installment.
@Kamalen lol I don’t see that happening, but one can dream!
@ymo1965 I couldn’t agree more with this. That was the one problem I had with this series and it’s reboot. The games were good and done very well. It just didn’t feel very Tomb Raider like. She had never killed somebody before and now was taking down army’s of men. The original TR, I think there was only two or three humans in the whole game. The rest was exploring and tombs. More tombs and less gun fight is very much welcomed.
Yay! I could always use more Camilla Luddington in my life.
